Selling an old or non-running Suzuki Sidekick
Suspension is the part Sidekick owners complained about most, and half of those 32 complaints are on one model year: the 1996, with 16. That count comes from 229 complaints filed with NHTSA across the Sidekick's run, as of October 10, 2026.

Sidekick problems, grouped by model years
We have no generation history for the Sidekick, so the EPA's 1989-1998 years are grouped here by what the complaints and recalls show. The EPA lists two-door convertibles and hardtops, four-doors and the Sport, in 2WD and 4WD.
1989-1992: seat belt buckles
These years hold only 36 complaints, plus one filed under 1988, but every one of the Sidekick's 19 seat belt complaints is in this group. The 1991 alone has 10.
Recall 95V103 covers 1989-1991 models. On the Sidekick's front belts, the red plastic buckle buttons stamped "PRESS," tended to break. Broken bits could drop inside and keep the buckle from working right. Suzuki's remedy asked owners to inspect both front buckles and their red buttons. The campaign counts 127,155 vehicles and may include other models.
1993-1994: the rear axle welds
The 1993 drew 14 complaints and the 1994 drew 21, the first with structure at the top of its components (4). The 1994 also carries the Sidekick's only complaint that reports a death.
Recall 94V073 is the serious one here. On 1993-1994 Sidekicks, the rear axle shaft housing tubes were welded incorrectly and could crack. A crack could let the wheel assembly separate, along with the brake line. Dealers inspected the welds and replaced the whole rear axle assembly if needed. 5,247 vehicles in the campaign.
1995-1998: struts, power train and the fuel tank
These four years hold 157 complaints, about two of every three on the Sidekick.
Front struts. The 1996 leads all years with 60 complaints, and suspension tops it with 16. Recall 00V008 covers 1996-1997 models: the mounting base at the top of each front strut was not strong enough, and the bolts holding the strut to the body could break. Dealers added a reinforcement for both front struts. 13,461 vehicles in the campaign.
Fuel tank. Recall 96V121 covers the 1996. In a rear-end collision, a reinforcement on the tank flange attachment could puncture the fuel tank, which did not meet the federal fuel system integrity standard. Dealers installed two shield gussets between the tank and its brackets. 4,325 vehicles.
Power train and engine. Power train ties structure on the 1995 (4 each), leads the 1997 (8) and is second on the 1996 (13). Engine and engine cooling has 8 on the 1996 and 6 on the 1998.
1998. Air bags lead the last year with 9 complaints. It also has the most crashes (9) and injuries (11) reported for any Sidekick year.
Complaints and recalls by model year
NHTSA's Suzuki Sidekick owner reports, counted October 10, 2026. Younger cars normally trail in complaints simply from fewer years in service; with the Sidekick, even the 1998 has had decades. One campaign across several years appears on each of those rows.
