Selling a wrecked or broken Toyota Corolla Cross

Even a nearly new Corolla Cross can end up wrecked, flooded or burned, or stuck with a fault the owner is tired of chasing. You can sell it whole and as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

On a car this young, two things can make a repair cheaper than you think: Toyota's warranty, and the recalls listed below. Both are worth a look before you sell.

One generation, two powertrains

In North America the Corolla Cross is built at one plant: Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, a Mazda-Toyota joint venture in Huntsville, Alabama, which started building it on September 30, 2021.

  • Gas, 2022 on. A 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four with a CVT that has a physical first gear, in front- or all-wheel drive. EPA puts the 2022 front-drive car at 32 mpg combined.
  • Hybrid, 2023 on. The same size engine with three electric motors, 196 net horsepower and all-wheel drive on every car. EPA rates the 2023 at 42 mpg combined.
  • 2026 refresh. Two new front-end designs, still built in Huntsville.

Recalls and service campaigns

NHTSA lists eight recall campaigns. Four are about air bags, three are about the hybrid, and one is a distributor campaign for load labels.

Air bags on 2022-2023 cars

  • Instrument panel, 23V384. On 96,007 2022-2023 Corolla Cross models, the panel over the passenger air bag may have been made without its required perforation, so the bag may not deploy properly. NHTSA says these cars fail Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." Dealers inspect the panel and replace it if needed. A follow-up, 23V864, calls 12,575 already-inspected cars back for another look.
  • Spiral cable, 23V480. A weld inside the steering column's spiral cable may be weak enough to cut off the driver air bag. That campaign, 152,927 vehicles, also covers the 2023 Corolla, Highlander and Tacoma and several Lexus models. A second campaign, 25V040, covers 1,716 of them that may have been repaired wrong the first time.

Hybrid software and hardware, 2023-2026

  • Brake assist, 24V708. A skid control software error can drop power brake assist in a turn, which lengthens stopping distance. It covers 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrids and 2023-2025 Corolla Hybrids, 145,383 in all.
  • Reverse warning sound, 26V203. On 73,528 2023-2025 hybrids, the sound that warns pedestrians while backing up may be too quiet to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 141. A software update fixes it.
  • Inverter bolt, 25V869. A loose bolt inside the inverter of 2026 hybrids can cut motive power or short out and raise the fire risk. Dealers replace the inverter. The 55,405-vehicle campaign includes 2025-2026 Camry Hybrids.

Not recalls, but worth knowing

Toyota service campaign 23TC01 updates the forward camera software on about 9,910 2023 models built from mid-November 2022 to late January 2023, whose Toyota Safety Sense features could drop out for about 4 seconds.

Engine is the area named most in 2022 and 2023 complaints. Toyota bulletin T-SB-0104-21 applies to the M20A engines in 2022-2024 gas models and 2023-2024 hybrids: on short drives in severe cold, moisture collects in the oil and freezes, and the dipstick can look milky or the dash can warn of low oil pressure. We haven't read the complaints, so we can't say how many describe that.

Before you sell a newer one

  1. Warranty. Toyota's limited warranty runs 36 months or 36,000 miles on every vehicle, so many 2024-2026 cars, and some 2023s, are still inside it. If the problem is a defect, ask a dealer before paying for a repair or selling.
  2. Hybrid battery. Toyota states that every Toyota hybrid battery has a 10-year, 150,000-mile limited warranty, whichever comes first.
  3. Recalls. Run the VIN at NHTSA's lookup. A hybrid that lost power may be a free inverter replacement under 25V869.
  4. Paperwork. If an insurer has totaled the car, the salvage title guide explains what that means for a sale. If you still owe on it, see selling a car with a loan. After a crash, the wrecked car guide helps you weigh repair against selling.

Selling a Corolla Cross whole

Note the VIN and the miles on the clock, and describe the crash, flood or fault in a sentence or two. Request a price online or by phone at (877) 421-6008. Let us know where the car is, such as your driveway, a tow yard or a body shop, and whether it can roll. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Don't pull parts first. You sell the whole car as it sits; the wheels, the 12-volt battery and the converter stay on it. If a previous owner or a shop took something off, list it. The title and your ID go with you to the pickup. Plate and insurance rules depend on the state, and after you sell lists them.

Questions people ask

Which Corolla Cross model year has the most complaints?
The 2023, with 176 of the model's 321 as of October 10, 2026. Engine is the area named most on it (60), then electrical system (41). The median mileage in those 2023 complaints is 2,900, so half were filed before the car reached 2,900 miles.
Was my Corolla Cross in the passenger air bag recall?
Recall 23V384 covers 96,007 2022-2023 Corolla Cross models whose instrument panel may lack the perforation the passenger air bag needs to deploy properly. Some cars inspected under it were called back again under 23V864. Your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls tells you if either is still open.
My 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid lost power. Is there a recall?
Recall 25V869 covers 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrids, along with 2025-2026 Camry Hybrids, with a bolt inside the inverter that may not be tight. It can cause a loss of motive power or an electrical short. Dealers replace the inverter assembly free of charge.
Can I sell a Corolla Cross that was totaled or still has a loan?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, wrecked ones included. If you still owe on it, the lender's lien must be released for the title to transfer. Our car loan guide explains how payoffs work.
