Its complaint file at NHTSA is small, 45 complaints for 2020-2025. The recalls deserve more attention, especially the two for the starter.
A Toyota with BMW underneath
The fifth-generation Supra was developed with BMW, on the platform under the BMW Z4. Magna Steyr built it for Toyota in Graz, Austria, from March 2019 to March 2026, and 2026 was the final model year. The engines are BMW's: a 3.0-liter turbo six, rated at 335 hp for 2020 and 382 hp from 2021, and a 2.0-liter turbo four that reached the US for 2021. A ZF eight-speed automatic came standard, and a six-speed manual was added for 2023 on the 3.0 cars.
BMW of North America filed 11 of the Supra's 12 recall campaigns. The twelfth, a labeling recall, came from Gulf States Toyota.
The starter recalls: keep it outdoors
Recall 25V636, filed in September 2025, says the engine starter relay on 2020-2022 Supras may corrode, overheat and short-circuit. Its 199,674 vehicles include many BMW models. The recall record's interim advice is to park outdoors, away from structures, until the starter has been replaced. Dealers replace the starter free, and owner letters went out February 6, 2026.
A second campaign, 26V056 from January 2026, reaches 2021-2023 Supras along with several BMW lines, 87,394 vehicles in total. It also cites fire risk, and the remedy is again a new starter at no charge.
If either one is open on your car, flag it in your offer request and keep the car outdoors until it's collected.
The rest of the recall list
- 21V598 (2020-2021): engine software can cut brake assist while the engine starts, though the brakes still work without it. It covers 50,024 vehicles across BMW models and the Supra.
- 23V821 (2023): transmission oil can seep into the control unit and seize the gears, cutting drive power without warning. Its 552 vehicles include BMW models.
- 20V355 (2020): in heat and on rough roads, a steering tie rod can be damaged or crack. The 2,779 vehicles include several BMWs.
- 20V700 (2020-2021): a weak weld between the two fuel tank halves can let fuel leak. The 49 cars include the BMW Z4.
- 19V850 and 20V516 (2020): headlight control units that can fail, and headlamps that could be aimed sideways.
- 19V653 (2020): seven cars with a badly welded mount for the driver's seat belt guide loop.
Complaints and recalls by model year
These Supra figures were read off NHTSA's bulk files on October 10, 2026. The electrical system (11) and the engine (9) are the most-named components, and five complaints mention the starter. Recalls show up under each year they cover, so the column totals 18, not 12. No 2026 complaints are on file yet.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes reported | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 16 | 3 | 8 |
| 2021 | 20 | 1 | 5 |
| 2022 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
| 2023 | 5 | 0 | 3 |
| 2024 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| 2025 | 2 | 0 | 0 |
Before you sell
Start with the VIN on NHTSA's recall search, since both starter campaigns are free to fix. A 2023 that suddenly lost drive should be checked against 23V821. After a crash, our wrecked car guide helps weigh the repair against the car's value, and salvage title explains what an insurance total means for selling.
Selling a GR Supra as it sits
- Note the VIN, mileage, engine (four or six), transmission and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits, such as a garage, a driveway or a body shop, and whether it rolls. A low car on damaged wheels is worth mentioning so the right truck comes.
- Keep it whole, wheels and all, and list anything already removed.
- Keep the title and a government ID ready for the driver. Plate rules by state are in after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Is my GR Supra in the starter recall, and where should I park it?
- Recall 25V636 covers 2020-2022 Supras and recall 26V056 covers 2021-2023 cars. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The 25V636 notice asks owners to keep the car parked outdoors, clear of buildings, until a dealer has swapped the starter at no cost.
- Why does a Toyota have recalls filed by BMW?
- The GR Supra shares its platform with the BMW Z4, and its engines and automatic gearbox come from BMW. BMW of North America filed 11 of the 12 recall campaigns NHTSA lists for the 2020-2025 Supra.
- Which GR Supra years have the most complaints?
- The 2021 has 20 and the 2020 has 16, out of 45 in all as of October 10, 2026. Every later year has five or fewer. With numbers this small, a single complaint can change the picture.
- Will you buy a GR Supra after a crash, or one that won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us what got hit or what failed, if the car can roll, and which recalls are open.
