The GR86 is the second-generation 86, on sale since the 2022 model year. Subaru builds it in Ota, Japan, alongside its twin, the BRZ. Its NHTSA record is short: 47 complaints and two recalls through the 2025 model year.

The car in brief

Toyota showed it on April 5, 2021 as the "GR 86" and later dropped the space from the name. It has one engine, a 2.4-liter FA24D flat-four. Toyota's launch release puts it at 228 hp and 184 lb-ft, up from 205 hp and 156 lb-ft in the first-generation car. Drive goes to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The manual got low-viscosity oil and strut bearings to handle the extra torque, and automatic cars came with Subaru's EyeSight driver assist at launch. The EPA rates a 2022 automatic at 21 mpg city and 31 highway.

What owners and Toyota have flagged

Engine complaints. Engine is the most-named component, in 24 of the 47 complaints: 13 on the 2022, 10 on the 2023 and 1 on the 2024. A further 7 fall under fuel and propulsion. The counts show where owners point, not what failed. There is no engine recall, and we found no Toyota bulletin on the engine.

Rear turn signals, 2022. Recall 23V609 covers 2022 BRZ and GR86 cars whose rear turn signals can cut out now and then. Its 8,915 count spans both nameplates. Subaru filed the report on August 31, 2023 because Subaru builds the car, and Toyota's dealer notice (23TA10) puts the GR86 share at about 5,700 cars built from early November 2021 to late April 2022. Dealers replace both rear combination lamps. Five of the 2022's complaints concern exterior lights.

Connected services left off. About 1,470 early 2022 cars, built November 2021 to February 2022, left the factory with the data communication module switched off, so emergency calling did not work. Under campaign 22TD03 the owner could turn it on from a letter, or any Toyota dealer did it free, until April 30, 2023. A 2023 bulletin, 23TD03, reprograms the module on certain 2022-2023 cars.

A label. Recall 24V548 had Gulf States Toyota mail corrected load labels for some 2023-2024 GR86s and many other Toyota models, 33,848 vehicles in all, because the printed maximum capacity weight was wrong.

Before you sell

A newer car may still be covered. Toyota states that "Every Toyota vehicle is supported by a 36-month/36,000-mile limited warranty coverage," so if your GR86 is inside that window, talk to a dealer about a failure before you sell. After a crash, compare the repair estimate with what the car brings in one piece; selling a wrecked car walks through it. For a dead motor, see blown engine.

Selling the GR86 whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage and what happened to the car.
  2. Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it is: a garage, a body shop, a paddock lot, the street. Low cars can be awkward to load, so mention any damage under the nose and whether it rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Aftermarket wheels, exhaust or suspension can stay on. If stock parts were sold off or are missing, tell us, since that changes the offer.
  5. Have the title, keys and a photo ID ready for pickup. If a loan is still open, see selling a car with a loan.

Questions people ask

Has the GR86 had an engine recall?
No. NHTSA lists two recalls for it as of October 10, 2026: 23V609 for rear turn signals on 2022 cars, and 24V548 for an incorrect load label on some 2023-2024 cars. Engine is still the component named most in owner complaints, 24 of 47.
Is the GR86 the same car as the Subaru BRZ?
They are twins. Subaru builds both at its Gunma plant in Ota, Japan, and the 2022 turn signal recall was filed by Subaru and covered both nameplates.
Do you buy a GR86 that was crashed at the track or has a modified engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. List what was changed and anything that was taken off, because missing parts change the offer.
