Selling a worn-out Toyota Pickup

An old Toyota Pickup with a blown head gasket, a frame gone soft with rust or a dead 22R can be sold the way it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and trucks count. There is free pickup anywhere in the US, so it doesn't matter if this one has not moved in years.

This page covers the 1984-1995 trucks, two generations that Toyota sold until the Tacoma took over partway through 1995. Their official name was simply the Truck, but most owners called them the Pickup, and NHTSA files them that way. The record holds 375 complaints and one recall.

Two generations of the compact Truck

1984-1988. These were the fourth-generation Hilux, built at Toyota's Tahara plant and by Hino in Hamura, Japan, with final assembly in Long Beach, California. The core engine was the 2.4-liter 22R four, fuel-injected as the 22R-E. A turbocharged 22R-TEC ran from 1985 to 1987, a turbodiesel was offered early on, and a 3.0-liter 3VZ-E V6 came late in the run. For 1986, four-wheel-drive trucks traded the solid front axle for independent front suspension with torsion bars. The EPA rated a 1984 two-wheel-drive diesel with the five-speed at 29 mpg combined.

1989-1995. The fifth generation went into production in September 1988 with the same 22R and 22R-E fours and the 150-hp V6. Its one-piece bed walls did away with the seams that rusted on earlier beds. A new grille carrying the Toyota emblem came for 1992. Long Beach kept doing final assembly, and some trucks were built at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California, while others still came from Japan. The EPA rated a 1990 4WD V6 five-speed at 16 mpg combined.

What the complaints point to

The 3.0-liter V6 head gasket

In October 1996 Toyota gave head gaskets on certain 1988-1994 Pickups, 4Runners and T100s with the 3VZ-E V6 extra coverage: 8 years or 100,000 miles, or 12 months from the owner letter. Toyota later found the failures "primarily limited to a particular production period," January 1990 to October 1994 builds. Under service campaign V06, those trucks got new head gaskets whether or not they leaked, and engine parts damaged by a failed gasket could be repaired too. The campaign expired on September 24, 2018.

Engine and cooling complaints total 64. On the 1992, seven in NHTSA's listing mention the head gasket; one owner had it "REPLACED BY TOYOTA (SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN V06) AT 109,574 MILES" and saw it fail again at 189,000. A 1994 owner says the gasket failed again after a fix done under what the owner called a "silent recall."

Frames that rust through

Structure is the top complaint category on the 1992, 1993 and 1994: 13, 14 and 27 complaints. On the 1994, 25 of the 27 mention the frame and 21 mention rust, including one where the steering box came off the frame. A 1993 owner reports frame rails that crush under the empty truck's weight. Toyota's later frame programs cover Tacomas, Tundras and Sequoias. No Pickup year is in them.

The steering relay rod

The only recall, 05V389, covers 1989-1995 trucks. Turning the wheel to full lock over and over while stopped can start a fatigue crack in the steering relay rod, and the rod can break. Dealers replace it. The 977,839 count covers the whole campaign, which also includes the 4Runner and T100.

Seat belts draw 43 complaints in all. On the 1992-1994 trucks, most describe belts that won't retract.

Complaints, crashes and recalls by year

Summed from NHTSA's raw data, October 10, 2026. Six complaints carry the 1996 model year, by which time the Tacoma had already taken the Truck's place. Recall 05V389 counts once in each year it names.

Fix it, or sell it as is?

The V06 head gasket campaign ended in September 2018, and we found no frame recall or rust program for this truck. Only the relay rod recall might still be open, so run the VIN at NHTSA's lookup.

Then look hard at the frame. A gasket or a clutch is a repair; a frame rusted through near the springs or the steering box is a much bigger question. Weigh a shop's written number against what trucks like yours bring when they run. If the truck has been parked for years, our guide to a car sitting for years covers what to check first.

Selling the truck whole

  1. Find the VIN on the dash, door jamb or title, and note the mileage and what is wrong.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it sits: a backyard, a barn, a gravel lot. Mention flat tires or a seized brake if you know of them.
  4. Don't strip it. Leave the engine, wheels and converter on. Already missing a bumper or tailgate? List it; our missing parts page explains why it matters.
  5. Have the title and a photo ID for the driver. No title? Start with our no-title guide. Plates are covered on after you sell.

Questions people ask

Was the Toyota Pickup ever recalled for frame rust?
No. NHTSA's file holds one recall for the 1984-1995 Pickup, and it is for the steering relay rod, not the frame. Toyota's frame rust programs came later and cover Tacomas, Tundras and Sequoias. Rust is still the most common complaint on the 1992-1994 trucks.
Will Toyota still replace the head gasket on my 3.0-liter V6 Pickup?
No. The V06 special service campaign for those engines expired on September 24, 2018, according to Toyota's own dealer packet. If the gasket fails now, the repair is on the owner.
Can I sell a Pickup that is missing a bumper or tailgate?
Ask for an offer and list what is gone, like a bumper or tailgate, since missing parts change the offer. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so keep the engine, wheels and converter on the truck.
