Frames and spare tire carriers, 1997-2010
Structure is the largest complaint category on the Tacoma: 1,961 of the 8,442. It ranks first on every model year from 1997 through 2007. On the 2001, 212 of 396 complaints fall under it; on the 2006, 210 of 782. In NHTSA's online listing for the 2006, 179 of the structure complaints mention rust.
Three programs covered trucks used in cold states with heavy road salt:
- Spare tire carrier, 2001-2004. Recall 12V542 (Toyota's C0V) covers trucks first sold or now registered in those states. Dealers inspect the carrier and replace its lift plate as needed. The campaign counts 150,000 trucks.
- Frames, 2001-2004. Program ZTH stretched frame coverage for rust holes to "a total of 15 years/unlimited mileage from the vehicle's date of first use." In the harshest states it also required a rust-proofing treatment done before an earlier campaign ran out.
- Frames, 2005-2010. Program ZH6 came out of a class action settlement approved May 21, 2017. A frame that met the court's Rust Perforation Standard was replaced at no cost. Coverage ran for "the latter of 12 years from the Date of First Use (DOFU) or January 31, 2019."
By their own terms, both frame programs have now closed for every truck.
Older trucks: suspension supports, clocksprings and leaf springs
Suspension leads the complaints on the 1995 (83 of 177) and 1996 (79 of 253). Recall 96V129 covered 90,000 of those trucks for a front suspension support that can crack and cost the driver control.
The second generation's largest recalls:
- 12V092, 495,470 trucks, 2005-2009. Steering wheel vibration can damage the spiral cable that feeds the driver air bag, and the bag may then fail to deploy.
- 14V604, 710,711 trucks, 2005-2011 PreRunner and 4x4 models. A rear leaf spring can fracture from stress or corrosion, and a broken leaf can puncture the fuel tank.
- 13V337, 342,451 Access Cabs, 2005-2011. Closing the access doors hard, over and over, can loosen the screws that hold the seat belt pre-tensioner to its retractor.
- 09V388, the floor mat recall, covers 2005-2010 Tacomas among many Toyotas; 4,445,056 is the whole campaign's count.
Suspension leads the complaints on the 2008 through 2011. On the 2009, exterior lights come second with 84 of 519, and owners describe amber lenses and housings melting. In 2014 Toyota extended headlamp coverage on about 237,000 2005-2011 Tacomas for bubbled inner lenses (program ZTZ). Its last window, 5 years from first use or 70,000 miles, has closed on every truck.
2012-2020: air pump codes, shifting, a differential leak, brakes
Engine complaints lead the 2012, 114 of 295. In NHTSA's listing, 98 engine complaints name the secondary air injection system or a P244x code, with owners reporting a check-engine light and limp mode. Toyota bulletin T-SB-0333-17 says codes P2440 and P2442 on the 2012's 4.0-liter V6 may come from moisture getting into the air injection pump. A 2018 revision added P2445 and a damaged pump filter as another possible cause.
Recall 14V054 updated Skid Control software on 2012-2013 Tacomas whose brake actuator could shut off stability control. It also covers the Lexus RX350 and 2012 RAV4, and its 261,114 count includes them.
The 2016 brought a new 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic, and power train complaints lead it, 117 of 323. Toyota bulletin T-SB-0077-16 describes slow engagement from Park to Drive, a harsh 1-2 upshift and gear hunting on some 2016-2017 V6 automatics. The fix is a new engine computer calibration. Recall 17V285 covered 227,732 trucks from those years for oil leaking at the rear differential, which can let it seize.
Brakes are the top complaint on the 2018 and 2019. Recall 18V888 replaced the brake master cylinder on 44,121 trucks from those years. The 2017-2020 trucks are also in fuel pump recall 20V682, a stall risk; its 1,525,742 count spans many Toyota and Lexus models.
2022 and newer: axles, brake hoses, shocks
Recall 24V152 is the biggest of the newer campaigns: 381,199 Tacomas from 2022-2023. Debris can leave the rear axle fasteners loose, and the axle shaft can then pull out of its housing. Owner letters went out April 17, 2024.
On the fourth generation, recall 25V058 replaces both rear brake hoses on 221,846 four-wheel-drive trucks from 2024-2025, because mud packed inside the rear wheels can damage them. Recall 26V514 covers 48,280 trucks whose shock absorber flanges can corrode until the oil reservoir falls off. Toyota expects the final fix in March 2027. Under recall 25V656, dealers inspect both front driveshafts on 5,960 trucks from 2025 and replace them as needed.
We found no recall in NHTSA's data for two newer owner complaint patterns. In NHTSA's online listing, 37 complaints on the 2024 mention the transmission, including hard 1-2 shifts, and 35 on the 2025 describe an inside door handle or cable that breaks and traps the door shut from inside.

Fix the Tacoma, or sell it?
Price the repair in writing, then price a running Tacoma like yours. When the first number swallows most of the second, sell the truck as it sits. Check these first:
- Recalls still open. Type the VIN into NHTSA's recall search. Dealers do the axle, leaf spring and brake hose recalls free; the shock recall's final fix is due March 2027.
- A rotted frame. The free frame programs are over. One 2006 owner told NHTSA the truck failed a state inspection over a rust hole about 3 inches wide; see failed inspection.
- A 2016-2017 that shifts hard. Ask a dealer about the T-SB-0077-16 calibration before you write off the transmission.
- A 2012 stuck in limp mode. Air injection codes point at a pump, not a dead engine. Have the codes read.
Parting it out yourself? Part out or sell whole compares the work.
Selling a Tacoma as it sits
- Jot down the truck's VIN and odometer reading, plus what has failed.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot it's in (driveway, back lot, shop yard, field), whether it rolls and steers, and whether the frame has cracked, so the tow truck can load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole. A lift kit, aftermarket wheels or a bed cover can stay on. A missing catalytic converter or tailgate changes the offer, so list anything already pulled.
- The tow driver collects the signed Tacoma title and glances at your photo ID. Plate rules differ from one state to the next; after you sell has each one.
No title? Start with selling a junk car without a title.
Questions people ask
- Which Tacoma model years have the most complaints?
- The 2006 leads with 782 complaints in our October 10, 2026 pull of NHTSA data. Behind it sit the 2005 (707), 2007 (541), 2009 (519) and 2008 (446). Frame and body complaints lead on the 2005 through 2007; on the 2008 and 2009, suspension comes first.
- Will Toyota still replace a rusted Tacoma frame for free?
- Going by the program terms, no. The 2005-2010 frame program, ZH6, ran until 12 years after the truck's first use or January 31, 2019, whichever came later. The 2001-2004 program, ZTH, ran 15 years from first use. Both windows have closed. A dealer can still run the VIN for any open recall.
- Do you buy a Tacoma whose frame has broken?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, trucks included, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Say up front that the frame is broken and whether the truck still rolls, so it can be loaded safely.
- Is my 2022 or 2023 Tacoma in the rear axle recall?
- Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to find out. Recall 24V152 covers 381,199 Tacomas from those two years. Dealers inspect the rear axle, tighten the retaining nuts and repair or replace damaged parts at no charge.
