Selling a junk or dead car in Clinton

Clinton has no junk-car ordinance we could locate online, which leaves Utah's statute as the rule we can cite. Under it, a car parked on someone's land without consent from whoever controls the property turns abandoned after a week. On a highway it takes two days. Clinton City Hall may enforce rules of its own on top of that, so ask there. If you're finished with the car, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The state rules a Clinton car falls under

Part 14 of Utah Code 41-6a sets those two clocks and makes abandonment an infraction. Police who have reasonable grounds can haul the car away, and the impound steps in 41-6a-1406 follow.

The consent part matters on a Clinton cul-de-sac. If the dead car is in your own driveway, you are the one consenting. The same car left at a friend's place, a rental you moved out of, or a shopping center lot does not. Our towed or impounded guide explains what follows a tow.

Utah keeps a tight grip on car dismantling. The title must first go to the state for cancellation, paired with a dismantling-permit application. Only then may the car be stripped or crushed. With the permit, the holder may break the car down personally or truck it to a state-licensed dismantler, crusher or salvage dealer.

A car at the very end has a shortcut. If the car does not run and no one means to rebuild it, Tax Commission staff can sign a Junk Permit. On paper it is called the Affidavit of Abandoned and Inoperable Vehicle. That permit clears it for dismantling and shredding. Junkyard or scrap yard explains who handles which part.

The title office is a drive away

We looked up the Davis County counter at 969 W Clark Lane in Farmington, 801-297-7780. Measured straight from central Clinton, it sits about 14 miles to the southeast. The county may run more offices. The sold report needs no visit. The DMV accepts the sold report online through the Motor Vehicle Portal, on Form TC-502, by mail to its Contact Center (P.O. Box 30412), or over the phone at 1-800-DMV-UTAH.

Signing the Clinton sale

  • Look at how the owners are joined on the title. With AND, all of them sign; with OR, one signature is enough. No notary.
  • Utah law requires you to provide the title to your buyer within 48 hours of the deal.
  • The plates stay with you unless the buyer is buying them too. A plate left on can bring tickets back to you.
  • Davis County runs emissions testing, but on the 2026 tables cars from model year 1995 or earlier are exempt.

After you sell covers the last steps.

Questions people ask

Does Clinton have its own junk-car ordinance?
We found none published online. That doesn't rule one out, and Clinton City Hall can tell you what applies.
When does Utah treat a car as abandoned?
In Clinton that means two days unattended on a highway, or one week on public or private land without consent from whoever controls it.
Do I have to drive to Farmington to sell my car?
Not for the sold report. A Utah title sale involves no notary, and the DMV accepts the sold report online, by mail and by phone. The Farmington counter we checked is about 14 miles from Clinton.
What is a junk permit in Utah?
It's a permit, formally the Affidavit of Abandoned and Inoperable Vehicle, that a State Tax Commission employee may issue for an inoperable car nobody will rebuild. It clears the car for dismantling and shredding.
