Selling a junk or dead car in Syracuse

In Utah you can't simply start pulling a dead car apart in a Syracuse side yard. Without the junk permit, Utah law keeps a Syracuse car in one piece until the title is submitted for cancellation, a dismantling permit request attached. For anyone planning to part out a car, that's a form before the first wrench. We buy whole non-running and junk cars in west Davis County instead. Owners sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Two permits for a car's last trip

Utah clears a car for the crusher one of two ways.

Dismantling permit. Send the title in for cancellation with the application. Once a Syracuse owner holds the permit, the car can be stripped for parts at home or taken to a licensed dismantler, a crusher or a salvage dealer.

Junk permit. For a Syracuse car that no longer runs and won't be repaired, someone at the State Tax Commission can sign the "Affidavit of Abandoned and Inoperable Vehicle or Junk Permit". That lets it be taken apart and shredded. Utah law also lets a car an investigator has marked unrebuildable be scrapped with no dismantling permit. The salvage buyer signs a statement saying it won't be rebuilt.

Utah calls a Syracuse car nonrepairable when parts or scrap metal are all it is good for. Part it out or sell it whole weighs the two choices.

When a Syracuse car counts as abandoned

Syracuse's ordinances weren't online, so this is the state's version. Syracuse could add its own rules on top.

State law uses two clocks. On a highway, a car left alone longer than 48 hours qualifies. On any property, it's "a period in excess of seven days without express or implied consent of the owner or person in control of the property." Both are infractions, and an officer with reasonable grounds may order removal. A car parked at a friend's with their blessing has consent. One dumped on a vacant lot doesn't.

Title office in Farmington

Utah's State Tax Commission issues titles through its Motor Vehicle Division. The closest Davis County office on the list sits at 969 W Clark Lane in Farmington, and its number is 801-297-7780. That sits roughly 11 miles southeast of Syracuse in a direct line. The Utah DMV posts hours.

Utah sale rules, Syracuse edition

  • Titles need no notary. AND means all owners sign; OR means any one.
  • Get the title to your buyer within two days, registration with it.
  • Since the car is in Davis County, add a current emission certificate when one is required.
  • TC-891 records mileage on anything newer than 20 model years.
  • TC-843 is the optional bill-of-sale form.
  • No title? Form TC-123 gets a $6.00 duplicate or, in part two, assigns the car without one.

The plate stays with you unless the buyer pays for it too. If it stays on, Utah says violations tied to it may fall on you. Close out with a sold report through MVP, TC-502 by mail, or 1-800-DMV-UTAH.

Questions people ask

Can I strip my dead car for parts myself in Syracuse?
Not before the paperwork. Before any crushing or teardown, the Syracuse owner mails in the Utah title to be canceled, together with an application for a dismantling permit. Only a car an investigator has already written up as abandoned and inoperable skips this.
When does a car parked on another person's land count as abandoned?
Under Utah law, after a week there without the landowner's agreement, express or implied. A car on a highway hits the line at 48 hours.
Is there a Syracuse junk-car ordinance?
We could not find Syracuse city code posted online, so everything here comes from Utah state law. Ask Syracuse's municipal center whether local rules apply to your lot.
