Selling a dead or junk car in Roy
An old car towed in Roy can be gone for good after 30 days. Picture a seized Roy car from eight or more model years back that nobody has claimed 30 days after the first notice. Utah law then lets the tow operator take it with a certificate of sale. If a dead car of yours is headed for a tow, selling first keeps the choice in your hands. We buy whole non-running and junk cars around Roy and Weber County. You'd sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

How Roy cars end up on a hook
Roy's code wasn't available online, so this is Utah law. Roy may have local rules on dead or unregistered cars as well.
The statute treats a car as abandoned once it is "left unattended on a highway for a period in excess of 48 hours," or after a week on property where the person in charge never agreed to it. That's an infraction. An officer with reasonable grounds may then have the car removed under the state impound rules.
The 30-day clock
Two facts decide whether the certificate-of-sale rule touches your car:
- Model-year age. Eight years or older, counted from the impound date, with the model year read off the VIN.
- The original notice. The 30 days start there. If the owner can't be found at all, the certificate can still issue.
Once a tow operator has that certificate, the car is out of your hands. To keep it, act inside the window. When tow and storage fees top what the car means to you, read towed or impounded for other options.
Title office in Ogden
Utah's Tax Commission issues every title through its Motor Vehicle Division. From Roy, the closest Weber County office is about 5 miles northeast on a map, in Ogden at 2447 Lincoln Avenue (801-297-7780). See the Utah DMV site for hours.
Plates and reporting the sale
When you sell, keep the plate unless it goes to the buyer. That isn't tidiness: tickets and traffic violations tied to a plate left behind can come back to the seller, Utah warns. Then let the DMV know, any of three ways:
- MVP, the online Motor Vehicle Portal.
- A letter listing year, make, plate or VIN, with your signature, or form TC-502, mailed to the Motor Vehicle Division Contact Center.
- A call to 1-800-DMV-UTAH.
Signing over a Roy car's title
- Utah requires no notary. With AND between names, all owners sign; with OR, one.
- Deliver the title within 48 hours, plus current registration.
- Weber County is a testing county, so a current emission certificate goes along where applicable.
- Complete odometer form TC-891 unless the car is 20 model years or older.
- A bill of sale, on TC-843 if you like, proves the title legally changed hands.
Lost title? TC-123 orders a duplicate for $6.00, or uses part two to hand the car to the buyer without one. After you sell wraps up the rest.

Questions people ask
- My old car got towed in Roy and I haven't collected it. What's next?
- If it's eight or more model years old and neither you nor a lienholder recovers it in 30 days from the original notice, Utah issues the tow operator a certificate of sale. Roy cars go the same way when the owner cannot be found. The VIN gives the model year, and age counts from the impound date.
- I sold the car with my plate still on it. Could that hurt me?
- Possibly. Utah's DMV warns that tickets and violations on a plate a seller leaves behind may be charged to that seller. File the sold report and hold onto your bill of sale.
- Does Roy have its own junk-car rules?
- Roy's code didn't turn up online, so this page uses Utah law alone. Roy's municipal offices can say whether the city adds local limits.
