Selling a junk or dead car in Layton

Layton sits in Davis County, one of five Utah counties that run emissions tests, so a Layton sale can involve one more paper than a sale in most of the state. The DMV's handoff list includes a current emission certificate if one applies. We buy whole non-running and junk cars from Layton and the rest of Davis County. Sellers sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Davis County testing

The 2026 county tables list model years 2020 back through 1996 as required, with 1995 and earlier exempt. Utah ended safety inspections for most vehicles on January 1, 2018, so for a typical Layton car the emissions test is the only check left. Commercial vehicles still face a yearly safety inspection.

What the DMV wants handed over is short: signed title, current registration certificate, and the emission certificate "if applicable." If a failed test is why the car stopped moving, failed inspection covers your options.

Abandoned-car law in Layton

No Layton ordinance turned up online, so here is state law. Layton's council could have rules of its own that reach further.

Layton uses the Utah rule. A Layton car counts as abandoned once it sits alone on a highway for two days. A week on private land without the owner's OK does it too. That's an infraction, and police with reasonable grounds may remove it.

Farmington's title office, 7 miles off

The State Tax Commission's Motor Vehicle Division handles Utah titles. For Layton, one listed office sits in Farmington at 969 W Clark Lane, phone 801-297-7780. From Layton's center that's about 7 miles southeast as the crow flies. Check hours at the Utah DMV.

The 48-hour rule matters more than the office does: Utah law has a seller deliver the title to the buyer within 48 hours. Also:

  • No notary needed. A title reading AND requires every owner's signature; OR requires one.
  • TC-891 records the odometer reading, unless the car is 20 or more model years old.
  • A bill of sale proves the title moved. TC-843 is Utah's form for it.

Lost title? TC-123, or a request online, brings a duplicate for $6.00, and part two of that form transfers ownership without one.

Plates and the sold notice

Unless the plate is part of the deal, take it with you. Leave it on and Utah says tickets or violations on it could be charged to you. Next, let the DMV know. Use MVP online, mail a signed note with year, make, plate or VIN (TC-502 also works), or call 1-800-DMV-UTAH. After you sell finishes the list.

Call (877) 421-6008 or go online with the year, model and mileage. The form covers the rest about your Layton car. Say if there's a current emission certificate. Pickup is from a Layton driveway, a work lot near the FrontRunner tracks, or a garage.

Questions people ask

My Layton car fails emissions. What paperwork goes with it?
Utah's DMV lists a current emission certificate "if applicable," handed over with the signed title and registration. Ask the DMV whether one applies to your car.
Is an odometer form needed for an old car?
Form TC-891 drops away once a car reaches 20 model years. Younger cars need it, signed by seller and buyer.
Has Layton passed its own junk-car ordinance?
We came up empty looking for Layton's code online, so this page sticks to Utah law. Layton city hall can tell you whether local rules on dead cars add anything.
