Junk and dead cars in West Jordan

Registration does not save a dead car in West Jordan. Section 13-8-2 makes it unlawful to keep "any licensed or unlicensed motor vehicle" that sits "in a wrecked, junked, partially dismantled, inoperative or abandoned condition, whether attended or not, upon any private or public property within the City." A plated sedan with a seized engine in the driveway meets that description.

If repairs no longer make sense, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You can sell the whole car as it sits, and free pickup anywhere in the US means a truck can come out to West Jordan.

Three phrases that decide it

First, "licensed or unlicensed": current tags are no defense. Second, "partially dismantled": a project with the front clip off counts. Third, "whether attended or not": living in the house and keeping watch does not help.

Driveways are covered as well as streets, because the section reaches private ground. The text we read sets no notice window.

Storage lots are not a loophole

Thinking of moving it to an RV lot? Section 13-2-3 says outdoor RV, motor home, trailer and boat storage "does not include the storage of damaged, wrecked or inoperable vehicles." A site that gathers and strips vehicles "not in running condition" is a junkyard under that same section, a separate land use with its own zoning.

Street enforcement and state limits

Under Section 7-3-8, the city "may immobilize, move or impound a vehicle parked or standing upon a street" in breach of the parking chapter. Utah's statute backs that up: two days unattended on a highway (more than 48 hours), or a stay "on public or private property for a period in excess of seven days without express or implied consent," and the car is abandoned.

Title office and signing

The state issues Utah titles. The Motor Vehicle Division office we checked for West Jordan is in Taylorsville at 4315 South 2700 West, Suite 1200 (801-297-7780). Drawn on a map, that is roughly 6 miles northeast of central West Jordan.

Signing needs no notary. Read the owner line: AND requires every name to sign, OR needs just one. Utah law sets 48 hours after the sale for getting the title to the buyer. A bill of sale is what shows the transfer was legal, and the state's TC-843 form is optional.

Cars newer than 20 years carry one more page, the TC-891 odometer statement, signed by both sides. Keep your plate unless you are selling it with the car; left behind, it can link you to someone else's violations. Then notify the DMV online, by letter or over the phone. See the Utah page and after you sell.

Getting an offer

Fill in the form or dial (877) 421-6008. On the West Jordan offer form, note anything that's already been taken off the car. A half-stripped car is still a whole-car sale to us, and the truck collects it from where it sits.

Questions people ask

Does a currently registered car escape West Jordan's junk-vehicle rule?
No. Section 13-8-2 covers licensed and unlicensed vehicles alike if they are wrecked, junked, partially dismantled, inoperative or abandoned, attended or not, anywhere in the city.
Is an RV storage lot an option for a broken car in West Jordan?
The city's definitions exclude damaged, wrecked or inoperable vehicles from outdoor RV, motor home, trailer and boat storage.
Why keep a bill of sale on a Utah junk car?
According to the DMV, it shows the title changed hands legally. If you'd like a ready-made one, the state's version is Form TC-843.
