Selling a Volkswagen Atlas that won't run
The Atlas has 48 NHTSA recall campaigns across its 2018 to 2026 model years, and two of those years, 2018 and 2021, carry 17 campaigns each. Owners have also filed 2,484 complaints, with the 2021 the busiest year at 642, as of October 10, 2026.

An Atlas that won't start or needs an engine is a big vehicle to deal with. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, SUVs included. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
What's been recalled and reported, by stretch of years
The Atlas went into production in 2017 at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee plant on the MQB platform, Wikipedia says. First-generation engines were a 2.0-liter turbo four and a 3.6-liter VR6, with an 8-speed automatic. The second generation started production in 2025 with a 2.0-liter four only.
Owners sent these reports to NHTSA. They aren't findings about every SUV. Recent years haven't been out long, so their counts are still low. Each vehicle count below covers the entire campaign. Many of those campaigns also reach other Volkswagen or Audi models.
2018-2019: the launch years
The 2018 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick. It also has 466 complaints, led by air bags (93) and the electrical system (85). The 2019 has 481, with air bags at 135.
Recalls on these two years include:
- 18V369: a do-not-drive notice on 2018 cars until dealers bled the front and rear brakes, because of brake caliper pistons.
- 18V380: rear seat belt buckle checks on 2018 Atlases.
- 23V215: a new passenger occupant detection mat and wiring on 2018-2021 Atlases, since a wiring fault could switch off the front passenger air bag.
- 26V590: a steering rack mounting bolt on 2018-2019 Atlases that may corrode and break. That campaign of 208,724 also includes the 2018 Tiguan and Audi Q3. Owner letters are expected to be mailed November 10.
Recall 19V389 blocked headlight aim adjustment on 2018-2019 Atlases; its 662,185-vehicle count also covers 2012-2020 Passats.
2020-2023: Cross Sport arrives
EPA adds the Atlas Cross Sport to this nameplate. The 2021 is the heaviest year in the file: 642 complaints, led by electrical (114), air bags (100) and service brakes (95).
Water and wiring tie several recalls together. Recall 21V892 fixed an A/C drain tube on 2020-2021 models that could leak water inside near the air bag control module. Recall 22V152 dealt with door wiring harness contacts that could corrode and disrupt side air bags, on 2019-2023 models. Recall 24V464 replaced the passenger occupant detection mat on 2020-2024 models.
Two are mechanical. Recall 20V712 told owners of 776 Atlas and Cross Sport SUVs not to drive until steering knuckles damaged in production were checked. Recall 22V753 covers engine connecting rod bearings that may be damaged on 2022-2023 Atlas and Cross Sport models; dealers inspect and replace the engine if needed. The 2022 lists engine complaints second (51).
2024-2026: cameras and software
The 2024 has 270 complaints, with the electrical system first (52). Three campaigns fixed rearview camera software: 24V480 (2024), 25V334 (2024-2025) and 26V473 (2024-2026), the last for a low-voltage event that affects screens. Recall 25V100 removed engine covers on 2024-2025 SUVs that may have been put back wrong after service. Recall 25V835 pulled 27 new 2026 Atlas, Cross Sport and ID.4 models off the road over wrong wheel bolts.
Complaints and recall campaigns by model year
Atlas complaints from NHTSA's file as of October 10, 2026. One campaign can span several Atlas years, so adding the recall column won't give you 48.

| 2018 | 466 | 18 | 17 | Air bags 93; electrical 85 |

Should you fix it?
On a vehicle this new, recalls can change the answer, so start there.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. A 2022-2023 with engine trouble should be checked against the connecting rod bearing recall before you pay for anything. The open recall guide covers selling with work pending.
- Air bag light on? Several campaigns on 2018-2024 models replace the passenger detection mat or wiring free.
- Electrical faults outside any recall? Get a written diagnosis. Our electrical problems guide helps you weigh it.
- Still owe on it? See still owe on the loan.
Selling an Atlas whole
- Collect the VIN and miles, list the faults, and check if it rolls and steers.
- Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it sits and how much room there is. A three-row SUV in a tight garage or a shop lot is fine; just say so.
- Leave it as is. Wheels, battery and seats stay. Tell us about anything removed.
- At pickup, bring the title (or lender details if there's a loan) and your ID. For plates, see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Atlas model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2021, with 642 as of October 10, 2026. Then the 2019 (481), 2018 (466), 2024 (270) and 2022 (255). The newest Atlas model years have not been on the road long enough to gather many reports.
- Is there an engine recall on the 2022-2023 Atlas?
- Yes. Recall 22V753 says the engine connecting rod bearings may become damaged on certain 2022-2023 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models. A dealer checks the engine and swaps it at no cost if it needs it. The 76,515-vehicle campaign also includes Audi Q5 models. Check your VIN before you decide anything.
- Does this page include the Atlas Cross Sport?
- Yes. EPA lists the Atlas Cross Sport under the Atlas, and many recalls name both.
- Can you haul off a full-size SUV that won't budge?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars and SUVs, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us if it rolls and how the truck can get to it.
