Selling a damaged or dead Volkswagen ID.4
The 2023 ID.4, the first model year built in Chattanooga for North America, has 461 owner complaints to NHTSA. No other year comes close. If yours is one of them, or any ID.4 with a battery warning, crash damage or a car that won't wake up, you can sell it without fixing it. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Two checks first: what recalls are open on your VIN, and whether one of them tells you to park outside or limit charging. Both can change how you handle the car while you decide.
Two plants, two sets of problems
Wikipedia says 2021-2022 ID.4s for North America came from Volkswagen's Zwickau and Emden plants in Germany. From the 2023 model year, North American cars were built in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Volkswagen halted ID.4 production there in April 2026.
The ID.4 numbers here all come from NHTSA's complaint file as we pulled it on October 10, 2026. That's 1,009 complaints, with 110 reporting a crash, 13 a fire, 72 people injured and no deaths. The electrical system is named most, in 378 complaints.
2021-2022: the imported cars
The 2021 has 336 complaints and 11 recall campaigns. The electrical system leads with 136, and service brakes follow with 28. The 2022 is quieter at 137 complaints.
Recall 23V040 covers 2021 cars whose battery management software can restart the high-voltage control module or shut off the pulse inverter. Dealers update both units' software. Recall 23V312 covers 2021-2022 door handles that can let water reach the circuit board. Two seat belt campaigns hit the 2021, and one of them, 21V606, counts 45,496 vehicles across many Audi models too, so that number is not the ID.4's alone.
2023 and later: the Tennessee cars
The 2023 has 461 complaints, 53 crashes, 7 fires and 15 recall campaigns. The electrical system leads again at 174, then structure at 45.
The battery recalls sit here. Recall 22V956 covers 1,042 rear-wheel-drive 2023 cars. In these ID.4s, the 12-volt charging cable may rub on the steering column shaft, and owners are told to park outdoors until the repair is made. Recalls 25V836 and 26V028 cover 2023-2024 cars whose battery cell modules may have misaligned electrodes that could start a battery fire. The instruction there: park outdoors right after charging, and no overnight charging inside. Recall 26V030 covers 43,881 2023-2025 cars whose high-voltage battery may overheat; dealers update the software and replace the battery as needed. The newest, 26V630, filed September 30, 2026, covers 2023-2026 cars whose battery may fail and lead to a fire. The interim advice is an 80% charge ceiling until the fix is done.
Door handles came back too. Recall 24V651 covers 99,064 cars from 2021-2024 whose handles can let in water, which can make the doors open unexpectedly. Recall 24V344 covers 2021-2023 cars whose center and instrument displays may not boot. Recall 25V125 covers a 2024 on-board charger that can stop charging the 12-volt battery; its 13,769 vehicles include Audi Q4 e-Trons.
For the 2025 model year, Wikipedia says the 62 kWh version was renamed ID.4 Limited, and it appears to be gone for 2026.
Complaints and recalls by model year
One campaign can span three or four model years and shows up under each of them, which is why this column totals well over 27.
| Year | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Recall campaigns | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 336 | 28 | 1 | 11 | Electrical system (136) |
| 2022 | 137 | 15 | 1 | 7 | Electrical system (35) |
| 2023 | 461 | 53 | 7 | 15 | Electrical system (174) |
| 2024 | 48 | 4 | 1 | 9 | Electrical system (21) |
| 2025 | 27 | 10 | 3 | 2 | Electrical system (12) |
The 2026 has no complaints in this count yet, though it is in two recalls: 26V630 and 25V835, a wheel bolt campaign of 27 vehicles that also covers the 2026 Atlas. A 2024 or 2025 has had fewer months in owners' hands than a 2021, so its small count will likely keep climbing.
Repair it or sell it?
- Start with open recalls. Enter your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Several battery, door handle and display recall notices list the dealer remedy as free of charge; check each campaign on your VIN.
- Battery trouble outside a recall? Get the shop's diagnosis in writing, then check what a working ID.4 of that year goes for. Our EV battery guide walks through that choice.
- Screens dark, doors acting up, warnings everywhere? The electrical problems guide covers when chasing faults stops making sense.
- Crash damage? On an electric crossover, body and battery work after a crash can outrun the car's value. See wrecked or totaled and repairs that cost more than the car.
Selling an ID.4 as it sits
- Note what it does: whether it powers on, whether it can be put in neutral, the mileage, and any warning on the screen.
- Mention open recalls, especially a park-outside or charging limit; the crew needs to know before loading.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits: a driveway, a garage, a body shop lot. We send the truck to the car, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole. Don't pull the charging cable, the wheels or anything else. If parts are missing, say so up front.
- Have the title and ID ready. Still making payments? See still owe on the loan. Plates, insurance and the title handoff afterward: after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which ID.4 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2023 ID.4 leads with 461 complaints by October 10, 2026, followed by the 2021 at 336. The 2024 has 48 and the 2025 has 27; those cars have spent fewer months on the road, so their totals are still growing.
- Can you pick up an ID.4 that has an open park-outside recall?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention the campaign number in your offer request and describe the spot the car sits in; the crew plans around both.
- Do the battery recalls cost anything?
- Recall remedies are done by Volkswagen dealers. The 26V030 notice lists a software update and a battery replacement where needed, at no charge. The 26V630 notice asks owners to keep the charge at 80% or lower while that repair is pending. Look up your own VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls to see which campaigns apply.
- Should I pull the battery or the charger cable before selling?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. The battery pack stays in the car, and so do the wheels and the charging cable. If something is already gone, say so.
