Sell a junk Volkswagen Tiguan whole
Engine is the component Tiguan owners name most in complaints to NHTSA: 550 of 2,307. It leads every model year from 2009 through 2012, and again in 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023. The 2018 has the most complaints of any year, 290, as of October 10, 2026.

When a Tiguan's engine is done, or the repair list outruns the SUV, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US, wherever the Tiguan is parked.
Three generations, and what each one drew
Owners sent these complaints to NHTSA. They don't pass judgment on every Tiguan. The latest Tiguan years keep picking up reports. A Tiguan recall's vehicle total counts every car in that campaign, which may include other Volkswagen models.
First generation (US data from 2009)
Production ran from 2007 to 2018 on Volkswagen's PQ46 platform, related to the Passat (B6), Wikipedia says, with 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0-liter turbo engines. In the US file, engine complaints lead each of the first four years: 206 of the 593 complaints filed on 2009-2012 Tiguans.
The early recalls are mostly about the engine and fuel. Recall 08V235 updated engine control software on 2,500 2009 Tiguans with the 2.0T engine (the rest of that 6,579-vehicle campaign was 2008 Passats). Recall 14V441 raised fuel pump pressure by software on 2009-2014 Tiguans, because winter-blend fuel could form bubbles in the fuel system. Recall 13V569 replaced a fuse for the exterior lights on 2009-2011 SUVs.
From 2013 to 2017 the pattern flips to air bags, which lead the component list every one of those years. On 2011-2014 Tiguans, recall 15V483 dealt with the air bag clock spring, and the same campaign took in several other Volkswagens. Recall 19V535 replaced the air bag control unit on 2015-2016 Tiguan and CC models when a capacitor in its power supply could switch the air bags off.
Volkswagen kept selling the first-generation SUV as the Tiguan Limited next to the second generation, then dropped it after the 2018 model year.
Second generation (2018-2024 model years in North America)
Wikipedia dates this generation's North American run to the 2018-2024 model years, with 1.4, 1.5 and 2.0-liter turbo engines and transmissions that include an 8-speed automatic.
Its first year is the busiest in the whole Tiguan file: 290 complaints and 14 recall campaigns, with engine (58) and structure (38) at the top. The 2018 recalls are a long list:
- 18V324: a do-not-drive notice on 2,473 Tiguans over the nut holding each front lower ball joint.
- 18V262: rear shock absorbers on long-wheelbase models whose lower loop could separate from a bad weld.
- 20V724: front seat belt webbing that could tear in a crash, on long-wheelbase models.
- 18V467: a sunroof ambient light LED module that could short circuit.
- 19V188: rear coil springs on 2018-2019 Tiguans that could fracture early, shared with Golf and Jetta models.
- 26V590: a steering rack mounting bolt on the 2018 that may corrode and break; its 208,724-vehicle campaign also covers 2018-2019 Atlases and 2019-2021 Audi Q3s.
Engine complaints climb again later in the run: 44 of 142 on the 2021 and 90 of 270 on the 2022. Recall 22V176 inspected rear suspension knuckles on 2021-2022 Tiguans, and recall 25V082 fixed rearview camera software on 2022-2024 Tiguans.
Third generation (production from 2024)
The third generation moved to the MQB Evo platform, with a 1.5-liter mild hybrid among its engines. The 2025 and 2026 have 49 and 33 complaints so far. Recall 26V587 covers certain 2025 Tiguans where a software error may reset the body control module and turn the ignition off.
Complaints and recalls by model year
NHTSA complaint file, counted October 10, 2026. Many Tiguan campaigns run across several years, so adding up the recall column won't give 39.

Fix the engine, or sell the Tiguan?
- Look up recalls by VIN at NHTSA. On a 2009-2014, ask whether the winter-fuel pump pressure update was done. On a 2018, there are several campaigns to check.
- Engine gone? Ask for a quote on paper and set it beside the selling price of a running Tiguan with that year and mileage. The blown engine guide explains how to weigh it.
- Check engine light only? It may be smaller than it looks. See check engine light on before you decide.
How to sell your Tiguan whole
- Have ready the VIN, the odometer miles, the trouble it has, and if it rolls.
- Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it is: driveway, street, garage, parking structure or repair shop. If it's all-wheel drive, say so, and tell us if it will shift into Neutral.
- Leave it intact. Tell us about anything already removed.
- On Tiguan pickup day, show your ID and the title. Plate rules differ from state to state; see after you sell.
Selling an SUV that won't move? See junk truck or SUV. Other models: Atlas, Taos, Passat, or all Volkswagen models.
Questions people ask
- Which Tiguan model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2018 Tiguan leads at 290 through October 10, 2026. The 2022 (270), 2019 (192), 2009 (168) and 2011 (162) trail it. A recent Tiguan hasn't been driven as many years, so it has had fewer chances to draw reports.
- Does this page cover the Tiguan Limited?
- Yes. EPA lists the Tiguan Limited under the Tiguan. Volkswagen sold it alongside the second-generation Tiguan and dropped it after the 2018 model year, Wikipedia says.
- My 2025 Tiguan shut off while driving. Is there a recall?
- Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. On some 2025 Tiguans, recall 26V587 covers a software fault that can reset the body control module and cut the ignition. Dealers update the software free, and owner letters were mailed October 6, 2026.
- Will you buy a Tiguan with a dead engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits and tell us what happened.
