Selling a junk or non-running Volkswagen CC
Of the 983 owner complaints NHTSA holds on the Volkswagen CC, 416 mention the air bags. That is more than the engine, fuel system and electrical system put together. Air bags are the top component in every model year from 2009 through 2016.

If your CC has an air bag light on, a tired engine or a list of faults that has outrun its value, you can sell it unrepaired. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
The air bag recalls, and why the counts are so large
Five air bag campaigns touch the CC, and all five cover other models as well. The vehicle totals below describe each entire campaign; the CC's share is smaller.
- 15V483 (2010-2014): the steering wheel clock spring. Dealers fit a protective cover. The campaign counts 415,825 vehicles across the CC, Passat, Eos, Golf, GTI, Jetta and Tiguan.
- 16V078 (2009-2014): dealers replace the driver's front air bag inflator. 659,493 vehicles, including Golf, Passat, Eos and several Audis.
- 18V148 (2009-2014): a second inflator swap, to an alternative inflator. 363,713 vehicles.
- 19V014 (2015-2017): driver's inflator again, 119,394 vehicles including Passat, Eos and Audi TT and R8.
- 19V535 (2015-2016): the air bag control unit may have a faulty capacitor that can shut the air bags off. Dealers update software and replace the unit as needed. 27,822 vehicles, Tiguan included.
A CC that went through all of them may have had its steering wheel apart more than once. If the air bag light is on now, find out whether an open recall explains it before you price anything.
Before and after the 2012 facelift
Wikipedia dates CC production from 2008 to 2016 and says the facelifted car went into production in January 2012, with a new front and rear and the same middle. In EPA's data every US CC is gasoline, and a 4motion version is listed. Wikipedia's engine list includes turbo fours and a 3.6 VR6.
2009-2012 model years
The 2010 has the most complaints of any year, 242, and power train is second there with 42. The 2012 has 230, with engine named in 52 and the fuel system in 32; three of its complaints report a fire.
Recall 17V509 covers 2009-2016 CCs where power to the fuel pump control module can be cut off. Dealers replace the module. Its 280,915 vehicles include 2006-2010 Passats. Earlier, 09V097 covered about 5,000 2009 CCs whose passenger seat belt buckle wiring could be routed where it might get damaged.
2013-2017 model years
Complaints drop year by year: 148, 80, 30, 26, then 4 on the 2017. Air bags still lead each year except the 2017. Smaller recalls fill this stretch: child locks on 2016 cars built in early 2016 (16V464), and wrong front head restraints on 23 cars from 2016-2017 (17V287).
Complaints and recalls by model year
NHTSA is the source of these Volkswagen CC complaint counts, which we checked on October 10, 2026. One sits under the 2008 model year, which EPA has no CC listing for. The bottom rows are the newest cars, and they've spent the least time on the road picking up reports.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recall campaigns | Top component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2008 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Air bags (1) |
| 2009 | 136 | 5 | 1 | 4 | Air bags (57) |
| 2010 | 242 | 7 | 7 | 4 | Air bags (83) |
| 2011 | 86 | 2 | 2 | 4 | Air bags (32) |
| 2012 | 230 | 11 | 8 | 6 | Air bags (84) |
| 2013 | 148 | 7 | 5 | 5 | Air bags (88) |
| 2014 | 80 | 3 | 2 | 5 | Air bags (51) |
| 2015 | 30 | 0 | 0 | 4 | Air bags (8) |
| 2016 | 26 | 1 | 1 | 6 | Air bags (11) |
| 2017 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 3 | Electrical system (2) |
Across all years: 37 complaints report a crash, 4 a fire and 27 an injury. None report a death.
Is it worth fixing?
Recall work is listed at no charge, so clear that first at NHTSA's lookup. Past that, weigh the quote against what a running CC of the same year brings.
- Engine trouble is the second most-named complaint, 148 in all. If a mechanic says the engine is finished, the blown engine guide helps you weigh it.
- Unfinished recalls don't stop a sale. See selling with an open recall.
- Older, high-mileage CCs often end up where the repair bill tops the car's value.
How to sell your CC whole
Note your CC's VIN, its odometer miles and any problems you know about, then request an offer online or by calling (877) 421-6008. Describe the parking spot, whether the car rolls, and whether all four wheels are still mounted, so the right truck comes. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Sell the whole car as it sits. Don't strip the wheels, the catalytic converter or the 4motion running gear first; missing parts change the offer. When we come for the CC, the driver looks over the title and your ID. No title? Read selling with no title first.

Questions people ask
- Which Volkswagen CC year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2010, with 242 as of October 10, 2026. The 2012 has 230 and the 2013 has 148. From the 2009 through the 2016, no component outranks air bags in any single year.
- How do I know if my CC's air bag inflator was replaced?
- Put the VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls. Recalls 16V078 and 18V148 cover driver's air bag inflators on 2009-2014 CCs, and 19V014 covers 2015-2017. A Volkswagen dealer can tell you what was done on your car.
- Will you buy a CC that won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. A no-start CC is fine; let us know if the wheels turn freely and what kind of spot it's in.
- What replaced the CC?
- The Arteon. Wikipedia says Volkswagen announced the change in November 2016, and that China kept building a car with the CC name from August 2018.
