Sell your broken Volkswagen Passat as it sits

Air bags are what Passat owners name most in complaints to NHTSA: 1,501 of 7,757. Most of them sit in three model years. On the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Passat, 1,011 of 1,826 complaints name the air bags. The 2013 alone has 748 complaints, more than any other Passat year, as of October 10, 2026.

The Passat's problem years, in four stretches

All the Passat numbers here are owner complaints sent to NHTSA. They are reports, not proof that something was wrong with every car. The last few years have had a shorter stretch to build up reports. Wikipedia says the Passat was dropped from North America after the 2022 model year, which is where the file stops.

1990-1997: engine cooling, and not much else

Only 360 complaints across these eight years. In five of them, owners named engine and engine cooling more than anything else. One recall in the brief reaches this era: 92V058, which replaced a fuel rail hose that could shrink past its clamps and leak on 1993 cars.

1998-2005: brakes and suspension, then fires

An NHTSA recall notice calls the 1999-2005 car the fifth-generation Passat. Its first years are about stopping and steering. On the 1999, owners named the hydraulic brakes in 170 of 664 complaints and the suspension in 107. The 2000 has 155 brake complaints out of 507.

Recall 99V131 targeted one piece of that. Some 1998-1999 Passat automatics had a brake booster vacuum hose valve that could stick part way below -4 F. In the states affected, dealers fitted a vacuum bypass.

The 2002 and 2003 shift to fire and fuel. The 2003 has 95 fire reports and 47 injuries in 631 complaints, with gasoline fuel system named most (124). Recall 08V156 covered 412,000 Passats from 1999-2005 with automatic transmissions, adding underbody heat shields where the old one could be damaged. Recall 02V026 fitted a new wheel house liner on 1998-2003 Passats to protect the fuel filler neck if a flat tire came apart.

2006-2010: the air bag pattern starts

The 2006 has 576 complaints, 144 of them about air bags and 92 about steering. The 2007 lists air bags first too (107). Driver air bag inflator recalls cover every one of these years: 16V079 for the 2006, 16V078 and 18V148 for 2007-2010, and 24V834 for the 2006-2007 sedan. Each of those campaigns also includes other Volkswagen or Audi models, so their vehicle counts aren't Passat-only.

Recall 17V509 replaced the fuel pump control module on 2006-2010 Passats and wagons, along with CC models, because a power interruption to the module could affect the fuel pump.

2012-2022: the Chattanooga Passat

In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat line for the US, built at its Chattanooga plant, Wikipedia says. The 2011 model year has only 16 complaints. Then the air bag numbers jump: 286 on the 2012, 374 on the 2013, 351 on the 2014.

Recall 15V483 put a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring on 2010-2014 cars when the air bag light was off. The 2012-2014 Passat is also in the inflator campaigns 16V078, 18V148 and 24V834.

Lighting drew two campaigns. Recall 14V125 replaced the low beam bulb holder on 2012-2013 Passats built January 2011 through November 2012, because the bulb could come loose. Recall 19V389 blocked the headlight's horizontal adjustment on 2012-2020 Passats; its 662,185-vehicle count also covers 2018-2019 Atlas SUVs.

Diesel owners have two more. Recall 16V171 fixed a sensor connector on 2012-2014 TDI cars where water could get in. Recall 17V309 replaced the driveshaft heat shield on 2012-2014 diesels with the DSG transmission. 2015-2016 cars got engine software under 15V705 for a camshaft lobe issue (that 91,867-vehicle campaign also covers the Jetta, Beetle, Golf and SportWagen), and recall 18V369 told 2018 owners not to drive until brake calipers were bled.

From 2018 on, no year tops 50 complaints.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Tallied from NHTSA records of owner complaints on October 10, 2026. Recall campaigns are listed per year and many span several years, so the column doesn't total 54.

Fix the Passat or sell it?

The recall check costs nothing, so do it first.

  • Air bag light on a 2006-2017? Check the VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. Several inflator and clock spring campaigns cover these years, and dealers do that work free. Our open recall guide explains selling with recall work still pending.
  • Brake trouble on a 1999-2000? In those years, NHTSA complaints from owners pointed to service brakes ahead of every other part. The bad brakes guide covers when it's worth fixing.
  • Big engine or transmission quote? Compare it with what a running Passat of the same year sells for. What a junk car is worth shows what moves the offer on one that doesn't run.

How to sell a Passat whole

  1. Write down the VIN, how many miles it has, what's broken, and if it can roll and steer.
  2. Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it is and how a truck can reach it: curb, driveway, backyard, garage or shop lot.
  4. Don't strip it. Wheels, battery and catalytic converter stay on. Mention anything already missing.
  5. When the Passat is picked up, have your ID and the title close by. Whether you keep the Passat's plates depends on your state; see after you sell.

No title? Read the no-title guide. Also see the Jetta, CC, Atlas, or all Volkswagen models.

Questions people ask

Why do 2012-2014 Passats have so many air bag complaints?
The complaint file doesn't say why, but it shows the pattern: 1,011 of the 1,826 complaints on those three years name the air bags. Several recall campaigns reach those years, including a clock spring cover (15V483) and driver air bag inflator replacements (16V078, 18V148 and 24V834). Check nhtsa.gov/recalls with your VIN for any open recalls.
Which Passat years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2013 Passat tops the list with 748 through October 10, 2026. Behind it sit the 1999 (664), 2002 (643), 2003 (631) and 2014 (594). Late-model Passats have had a shorter run to gather owner reports.
Can I still get parts or service for a Passat now that it's gone?
Volkswagen stopped selling the Passat in North America after the 2022 model year because of slow sales, Wikipedia says. Recall notices for the Passat say dealers do the repair free of charge. If the repair isn't worth it to you, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
My Passat has an air bag light on and won't pass inspection. Can I still sell it?
Yes. You can sell the whole car as it sits. Mention the light when you ask for an offer.
