Selling an old Volkswagen Quantum, running or not
The smallest Quantum recall campaign counted just 40 vehicles, a whole-campaign number that may include other models: 1984 cars whose rear brake drums could crack because of a mistake in manufacturing. Three of the Quantum's four recalls are on the 1984 model year, and owners have filed only 4 complaints with NHTSA across 1984 to 1988.

What the Quantum is
Wikipedia's article on the Quantum covers Volkswagen's B2 platform, shared with the Audi 80 (B2). It was built from 1981 to 1988 in Emden, Germany, and in Brussels, Barcelona and São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. German production ended on March 31, 1988, with Syncro models running until June and 3,345,248 built in Germany.
EPA's data lists the Quantum from 1984 to 1988 as a compact car and a small station wagon, in three versions: Quantum, Quantum Wagon and Quantum Syncro Wagon. EPA records the powertrain as diesel.
Recalls: brakes first, then idle
- 84V096, reported August 22, 1984 (1984 cars). Rear brake drums could crack in service. Dealers inspected them and replaced drums as needed. 40 vehicles, a whole-campaign count that may include other models.
- 85V099, reported July 30, 1985 (1984 cars). In bad weather the outer rubber of the brake hoses could turn brittle and crack, which could leak fluid and lengthen stopping distance. Dealers replaced hoses as needed. The campaign counts 105,000 vehicles; that whole-campaign number may include other models.
- 87V069, reported May 18, 1987 (1985-1986 cars). A worn idle stabilizer could make the idle rise and fall. Dealers replaced it. 25,000 vehicles, a whole-campaign count.
- 88V021, reported February 22, 1988 (1984 cars). The idle control unit could switch the idle stabilizer valve on outside its normal range. Dealers replaced the unit. 9,100 vehicles, a whole-campaign count that may include other models.
Complaints and recalls by model year
NHTSA's tally of owner reports, taken October 10, 2026. A recent car normally shows fewer reports, having spent less time with owners; at this age, the count mostly reflects how few owners ever wrote in.
| Model year | Complaints | Crash | Recall campaigns | Components named |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984 | 3 | 1 | 3 | Power train (2), exterior lighting (1) |
| 1985 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Service brakes, hydraulic (1) |
| 1986 | 0 | 0 | 1 | None |
| 1987-1988 | 0 | 0 | 0 | None |
Not one mentions a fire, an injury or a tow. The lone 1985 complaint names the same hydraulic brakes that two 1984 recalls dealt with.
Keep it, fix it, or sell it
- Brakes seized or soft? On a car this old, hoses and drums are where the recalls pointed. Read bad or seized brakes.
- Idles rough or stalls? Two recalls were about idle control. If it won't run at all, see car doesn't run.
- A wagon you meant to restore? Our old project car guide covers the choice.
