Selling an old or junk Volkswagen Fox

One recall reaches every Volkswagen Fox sold in the US. Campaign 95V105000 covers the 1987 through 1993 cars, because if a cooling part quits while the car is driven, coolant pressure can climb until the heat exchanger leaks. It fits the complaint file too: engine and engine cooling is the component owners named most, in 26 of 81 complaints.

Which Fox this is

Wikipedia describes the US Fox as a version of the Voyage, built by Volkswagen do Brasil and sold here as an entry-level subcompact from 1987 to 1993, Volkswagen's answer to cars like the Yugo and the Hyundai Excel. It came as a 2-door sedan, a 4-door sedan and a 2-door wagon. The wagon was dropped in 1991, the same year the sedan got a mild restyling. The photo shows the later Fox, built in South America from 2003, not the car sold here.

Recalls across the Fox years

  • 95V105000 (1987-1993): a bypass valve kit routes overheated coolant to the engine without passing through the heat exchanger. 164,000 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 88V187000 (1987-1989): the steering wheel relies on surface friction, which grease or oil on the shaft's cone can defeat. Dealers clean it, add a spring retainer and fit a self-locking nut. 104,000 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 92V058000 (1990-1993): the fuel hose on the fuel rail can shrink past its clamps and leak, so it is replaced with a self-tightening clamp. 358,000 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 91V087000 (1991): metal fuel lines with the wrong bend can rub on the intake manifold. 2,000 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 87V162000 (1987): under heavy loads, rear tire sidewalls on cars with sport wheels can rub the wheel housing. 138 vehicles in the campaign.

Each vehicle total covers a full campaign and can take in other models.

Owner reports in NHTSA's file through October 10, 2026, and not a grade. The 1993 cars have had a few fewer years to gather reports than the 1987s.

Repair or sell?

Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first. After that, get whatever it needs to drive again quoted and weigh that against what a running Fox sells for. Our car sitting for years guide walks through it.
