Selling an old or non-running Volkswagen Scirocco

Every recall on the 1984-1988 Scirocco involves the fuel system, and so do 11 of the 14 complaints owners sent NHTSA. The pump sits inside the tank, and three of the four campaigns are about that pump or its hose. The fourth is about the tank cracking.

Where these cars fit

The U.S. model years in EPA data, 1984 to 1988, all fall in the second generation. Wikipedia credits Herbert Schäfer with that Scirocco's design. The Scirocco was built by Karmann in Osnabrück from 1982 to 1992, with a 3-speed automatic or a manual with 4 or 5 speeds. EPA lists two names: the Scirocco and the Scirocco 16v.

The first generation, drawn by Giorgetto Giugiaro, ran from 1974 to 1981. The Corrado went on sale in 1988, aimed further upmarket, and in Wikipedia's words "effectively replaced" the Scirocco.

The fuel system, recall by recall

The vehicle counts below cover the entire campaign, and that can take in other Volkswagen models.

  • 84V152, reported November 27, 1984 (1985 cars). The hose on the in-tank pump could come off while driving, cutting fuel and stalling the engine. Dealers fitted a modified hose. 4,000 vehicles.
  • 85V090, reported July 18, 1985 (1985 cars). The in-tank pump could fail in high heat because its bearing tolerances didn't allow for expansion. Dealers fitted a modified pump, hose and clamps. 20,560 vehicles.
  • 87V053, reported April 14, 1987 (1985-1987 cars). A very fine mesh filter could restrict flow and let the pump seize in hot weather. Dealers fitted a modified pump and filter. 278,520 vehicles.
  • 91V201, reported November 18, 1991 (1987-1988 cars). A crack could form in the tank next to a seam weld at the rear. Dealers checked with a special tool and replaced cracked tanks. 51,000 vehicles.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Owner reports counted by NHTSA through October 10, 2026; recalls are campaigns that list the year. Recent cars tend to show low totals simply because they're young, but all five of these years are decades old, so that effect is gone here.

Worth fixing?

Selling it whole

  1. Find the title and the VIN plate, read the odometer, and note whether it's a 16v.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it sits: a barn, a garage or a driveway. Say if the tires hold air and if it rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave the engine and wheels on the car. Mention anything already gone.
  5. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Which Scirocco model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1987, with 9 of the 14 complaints in NHTSA's count dated October 10, 2026. Six of those name the fuel system and three the power train. The 1986 has 2 and the 1988 has 3. NHTSA's file holds none for the 1984 or 1985.
Which Scirocco years do the fuel pump and tank recalls cover?
Two 1985 campaigns covered an in-tank pump hose and the pump itself. Recall 87V053 covered 1985-1987 pumps that could seize in hot weather. Recall 91V201 covered 1987-1988 tanks that could crack near a rear seam weld. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy a Scirocco that's been parked for years with a dead engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits; just let us know whether it can be pushed and where it's stored.
