Selling a junk or non-running Volkswagen Rabbit

The 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit has 62 complaints on file with NHTSA, and 36 of them name the service brakes. That single year holds more than a third of all 154 Rabbit complaints, plus the only death reported in them.

Two Rabbits, decades apart

The Rabbit name covers two very different cars. NHTSA's complaint file has Rabbit records for 1984-1985 and for 2006-2009, and nothing in between.

The early car was built in the US. North American Rabbits came out of the Westmoreland Assembly Plant, close to New Stanton, Pennsylvania, according to Wikipedia. It opened for the car in 1978 and shut in 1988. The pickup in the photo came from that plant.

1984-1985: carburetor and seat belts

Only two complaints sit on these years, but each year has a recall. Recall 85V015000 covers 1984 cars whose carburetor throttle shaft can crack and break at the threaded hole for the throttle plate, from vibration. The fix was a reinforcement plate, or a new carburetor if a crack had started. Recall 85V031000 replaced 1985 front seat belts whose retractors might not lock in hard braking or a crash because two positioning tabs interfered. Those campaigns covered 25,000 and 21,000 vehicles, and both counts may include other models.

2006-2008: air bags, seats and the headlight recall

The 2007 drew 54 complaints, led by air bags and seats (8 each) and service brakes (6). The 2008 has 23, led by air bags (6) and power train (4). The 2006 has 13, with the engine and engine cooling named most.

Recall 07V442000 covers 2006-2008 Rabbits that may be missing a required cap in the low-beam headlight aiming screw socket, which breaks a federal lighting standard. Its 340,000 vehicles span the whole campaign, not just Rabbits. Recall 10V621000 covers 2007-2009 Rabbits with 2.5-liter engines: dealers inspect the underhood fuel line and replace it if needed. That campaign's 228,236 vehicles also include Jetta, Jetta SportWagen and New Beetle models.

2009: the brake year

The 2009 stands apart. Besides the 36 service brake complaints, four name electronic stability control and four the electrical system. Owners reported six crashes and two injuries on this year.

Recall 16V913000 covers the 2009 Rabbit along with Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Eos, GTI, Audi A3 and 2010 Golf models, 135,683 vehicles in all. Dealers update the ABS control module software to improve its self-testing. The recall summary does not say whether that touches what owners describe in their brake complaints, so read the notice for your car rather than assume it does.

Rabbit complaints owners sent NHTSA, tallied through October 10, 2026. This isn't a ranking. A 1984 has been driven far longer than a 2009, so it's had more time to pile up reports. Vehicle totals quoted for recalls cover each whole campaign.

Repair it or sell it?

  • Open recalls come first. Enter the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup. A 2007-2009 2.5-liter car may still need the fuel line check.
  • Brakes grabbing, pulling or not holding on a 2009? Get it diagnosed and quoted in writing. Our bad brakes guide covers when a brake job makes sense on an older car.
  • A 1984-1985 Rabbit that has sat for years is a different problem. See car sitting for years.

If the quote nears what a running Rabbit of the same year brings, selling it as it sits is often the better math. What a junk car is worth explains what moves the price.

How to sell the Rabbit whole

  1. Jot down the VIN, the miles and the symptoms.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the Rabbit sits and if its wheels turn; seized brakes are worth a mention.
  4. Sell the whole car as it sits. Don't strip wheels or the catalytic converter first.
  5. The title and your ID are needed at the handoff. Plates: check after you sell for your state.
