Selling a dead Volkswagen Golf or GTI

More than half the complaints filed with NHTSA on the 2019 Golf name the engine: 151 of 284. That one year sits inside the Golf's busiest stretch, 2015 to 2019, which holds the three model years with the most complaints. Across 1985 to 2026, owners filed 3,396 complaints on the Golf and GTI as of October 10, 2026.

A Golf with a dead engine still has a buyer. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Our truck drives to the spot where the car is parked.

Golf generations and what owners reported

The numbers are complaints owners filed with NHTSA, not a verdict on any one car. Newer years have had less time to pile them up. EPA lists the Golf and GTI together with the Golf R, R32 and e-Golf, and keeps the 2006-2009 Rabbit separate, so those Rabbit years aren't counted here. See the Rabbit page for those.

Mk2 and Mk3 (US data from 1985)

The second-generation Golf arrived in September 1983, and the third made its home-market debut in August 1991, Wikipedia says. In the US file, the nine years from 1985 through 1993 total just 91 complaints. The 1995 has 61, with electrical, equipment and latch complaints tied at 8 each.

The recalls are the useful part for anyone still holding one. Recall 92V050 replaced heater cores on 1985-1990 cars because an end cap could rupture and spray hot coolant into the cabin. Recall 87V053 swapped in-tank fuel pumps on 1985-1987 cars that could seize in heat. Recall 98V195 inspected rear brake lines on 1993-1995 cars that were routed too close to the fuel tank and could chafe.

Mk4 (the 1998 model)

Volkswagen released the Mk4 in October 1997 as the 1998 model, and it was Europe's best-selling car in 2001. US complaints rise with it: 133 on the 2000 (visibility first), 190 on the 2001 (air bags first, 49) and 198 on the 2002, where wheels show up with 22. Brake light switches came back under recall 07V063, a 1,002,000-vehicle campaign that covers other Volkswagens. Recall 04V584 replaced hazard switch relays on 2000-2002 cars.

Mk5 and Mk6 (2003 and 2008 debuts)

When the Mk5 came to North America in 2006, Volkswagen called the hatchback the Rabbit again. The Mk6 debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show and was a 2012 IIHS Top Safety Pick.

Two years stand out here. On the 2008, 121 of 183 complaints name the power train. On the 2009, 84 of 170 name the service brakes, and electronic stability control appears with 21.

Diesel owners should know recall 11V490. It added an improved fuel injector line for the number 2 cylinder on certain 2010-2012 Golfs and vibration dampers on all of them; the 2010 Golf lists diesel fuel system complaints in its top three (16). Air bag work also reaches these years: inflator replacements under 16V078 and 18V148 on 2010-2014 cars, and a clock spring cover under 15V483 on 2011-2014 cars. All three campaigns include other models.

2015-2019: the busiest years

The seventh-generation Golf moved to the MQB platform and came in about 100 kg lighter than the Mk6, Wikipedia says. The US file's heaviest years fall here. The 2015 has 322 complaints, 47 injuries and 14 recall campaigns. The 2016 also has 14 campaigns. The 2017 leans on fuel and propulsion (67 of 301). The 2019 is the engine year noted above.

Recalls from this stretch include an anti-theft control module fix on 2015-2019 GTIs and several Golf years (19V615), a suction pump replacement on 2015-2020 variants (24V110), and a 2018 brake caliper campaign (18V369) that told owners not to drive until the brakes were bled. Recall 19V879 pulled 8 cars, among them 2019 GTI and Alltrack models, off the road for wheel bearing replacement.

2020 onward

The Mk8 was revealed in October 2019, and e-Golf production ended in December 2020. The 2022 has 119 complaints, led by power train (22) and forward collision avoidance (15). The 2023 and 2024 have 23 and 41. The file has no 2025 row.

Complaints and recalls by model year

The Golf counts here are from NHTSA's complaint records, read on October 10, 2026. Quiet runs are grouped. Recall campaigns often reach across many years and models, so the numbers in the recall column won't sum to 75.

Worth fixing?

  • Check open recalls first at NHTSA's lookup. On a 2010-2012 TDI, ask about the injector line campaign. On a 2015-2020, ask about the suction pump.
  • Engine gone on a 2015-2019? Have the shop write up the repair cost, then see what a working Golf of that year sells for. The blown engine guide lays out the choice.
  • Brakes on a 2009? That's the year's top complaint. See bad brakes.
  • Not sure what it's worth broken? What a junk car is worth covers what changes the offer.

Selling the Golf in one piece

  1. Have ready your Golf's VIN, mileage, the fault and whether it rolls.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it sits and whether a truck can reach it, including if it's on a lift at a shop.
  4. Keep it whole. Turbo, wheels and converter stay put. Tell us about anything already gone.
  5. When the truck arrives, have the title and ID. Plate rules depend on your state: after you sell.

No title? See the no-title guide. Related: the Jetta, Beetle, Cabrio, or all Volkswagen models.

Questions people ask

Does this page cover the GTI and Golf R?
Yes. EPA lists the Golf and GTI together, along with the Golf R, R32, e-Golf, SportWagen and Alltrack, and the counts here follow that. The 2006-2009 Rabbit is listed separately and has its own page.
Which Golf model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2015, with 322 as of October 10, 2026. Then the 2017 (301), 2019 (284), 2016 (237) and 2002 (198). Newer Golfs have simply been on the road fewer years, so owners have reported less.
Was there a fuel line recall on the 2010-2012 Golf TDI?
Yes. Recall 11V490 installed an improved fuel injector line for the number 2 cylinder on certain cars and vibration dampers on all of them. The campaign of 168,275 vehicles also covers 2009-2012 Jettas. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you take a GTI with a seized engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits and tell us what's wrong.
