Selling a junk or non-running Volvo XC90

Three XC90 model years hold a little more than half of every Volvo XC90 complaint sent to NHTSA. The 2003, 2004 and 2005 hold 778 of 1,539, and the 2004 alone has 462. An early XC90 with a failed powertrain or a lit-up dash can be sold to us without a single repair.

Two generations, two patterns

The XC90 numbers come from owner reports in NHTSA's data, read October 10, 2026. Each complaint is just what one owner decided to file. Recent XC90s haven't been on the road long, so part of their low count is just age.

First generation: 2003-2014 model years

The XC90 was Volvo's first SUV. Wikipedia says production started in August 2002 at the Torslanda factory in Sweden, on the P2 platform. Engines included a 2.5-liter turbo five, a 2.9-liter twin-turbo six and a 3.2-liter six. Automatics included a 4-speed GM 4T65 with AWD, a 5-speed Aisin and a 6-speed Aisin.

These years hold 954 complaints. On the 2003 (47) and the 2005 (55) XC90, power train leads the list, while on the 2004 it shares first place with the electrical system at 129 each. The 2004 also has 37 complaints about the gasoline fuel system.

Recalls from this era to check on your VIN:

  • Fuel pump, 2003-2005 (09V483000). Dealers inspect the pump and replace it with a modified design if needed. The campaign also covers S80, V70, S60 and XC70 models in certain states, so its 158,733 vehicles are not all XC90s.
  • Battery bracket, 2005 (07V221000). Wikipedia calls it a recall of 42,211 2005 XC90s for a risk of battery short circuit and fire, and notes no short circuits had been reported. NHTSA's notice says the jack's crank handle could be left under the battery bracket.
  • Outer tie rod, 2003-2006 (06V155000). The ball joint can deform and the nut can loosen. That campaign lists 126,743 passenger vehicles and may include other Volvos.
  • Rear seat belts, 2003-2004 (03V391000). Second and third row belt attachments may not have been fitted right.

After the 2008 model year, complaints thin out. The 2009 through 2014 total 56.

Second generation: 2016 onward in the complaint file

Wikipedia dates the second XC90 from 2015, on Volvo's SPA platform, with 2.0-liter Drive-E four-cylinder engines (turbo, twincharged, and mild hybrid) and an 8-speed Aisin automatic. Plug-in versions carry a lithium-ion battery of 9.2 kWh on early cars, 11.6 kWh from 2019 and 18.8 kWh from 2021.

The 2016 is the busy year: 198 complaints, with engine named 64 times and 11 fires reported. Two recalls belong only to the 2016 XC90. Under 19V308000, heat and humidity can crack the engine coolant bleeder hose and cause a leak, across 34,006 SUVs. Under 16V268000, a sunroof switch got a software fix that turns off auto-close.

Later years show up in campaigns shared with other Volvos. Recall 22V793000 covers a 2022-2023 engine control software error that can stop the engine from starting. Recalls 25V282000 and 25V908000 cover a rearview camera that may not display on 2023-2025 cars; each lists 413,151 vehicles across many Volvo models. Back over prevention is a top component on the 2023, 2025 and 2026.

XC90 complaints and recalls, year by year

Lots of XC90 recalls show up under several years, so that column adds past 37. The 2009-2014 row is grouped because those years are quiet.

Repair it or sell it?

Compare the shop's price with what your XC90 would bring after it's fixed. If those two numbers are near each other, letting it go broken is often simpler.

  1. Run the VIN first at NHTSA's recall lookup. Several fixes above, like the 2016 coolant hose, could explain what you are seeing.
  2. Early SUV that won't shift or pull? Get a written quote, then read our bad transmission guide.
  3. Warning lights and electrical faults are the top complaint category on this model. Our electrical problems guide covers how to weigh them.
  4. Plug-in T8 with a battery fault? See hybrid battery failed.

Selling the XC90 whole

  1. Gather the VIN, mileage and what's wrong. Note whether it is a plug-in and whether it has the third row.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where your XC90 is parked and if the wheels turn. It's a large, heavy SUV, so our driver should hear about a cramped garage or a shifter locked in Park. More on that in junk truck or SUV.
  4. Leave the parts on, including the wheels and catalytic converter.
  5. As your XC90 goes on the truck, pass the driver the title and have a photo ID out. Plate rules differ by state; after you sell covers them. No title? Start with the no-title guide.

Questions people ask

Which XC90 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2004, with 462 as of October 10, 2026. The 2005 has 223 and the 2016 has 198. Owners of a 2024 or 2025 XC90 haven't had long to write in, so a short list there is not the full picture.
Was the 2005 XC90 recalled for a battery fire risk?
Yes. Wikipedia says Volvo recalled 42,211 2005 XC90s in 2007 for a risk of battery short circuit and fire, built at Torslanda between June 7, 2004 and May 13, 2005, and that no short circuits had been reported. NHTSA lists it as campaign 07V221000: a jack crank handle could be left under the battery bracket. Check your VIN to see if the work was done.
Will you buy an XC90 that won't start or shift?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it rolls, whether it is front-drive or AWD, and where it is parked.
Do I need to remove the third-row seats or anything else first?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Let us know early if anything has been pulled off the XC90, because that shifts our number.
