Selling a junk or dead Volvo S80
The S80's record at NHTSA is mostly about its first three years. The 1999, 2000 and 2001 hold 681 of the 954 complaints owners have filed, and 184 of the 186 complaints about vehicle speed control. If yours is one of those early sedans and it has finally quit, there's no need to fix it first.

S80 complaints by model year
The S80 numbers here come from NHTSA's complaint data, read October 10, 2026. Owners filed them, and the final S80 years have been around for less time. That column adds up past 27 because one S80 recall is often counted in several model years. Two quiet runs are grouped.
| Year | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Recalls | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1999 | 199 | 6 | 6 | 4 | Speed control (46) |

Problems by generation
First generation: 1999-2006 model years
Wikipedia says the first S80 was built from August 1998 on the P2 platform, mainly at Torslanda in Sweden, with a few 1999 cars for North America built at Halifax. It replaced the 940 and 960. Engines listed include 2.0-liter turbo and 2.4-liter five-cylinders, and the automatics include a 4-speed GM 4T65 for AWD and a 5-speed Aisin.
These years hold 826 complaints. After speed control, the 1999-2001 cars draw engine and engine cooling complaints: 21, 50 and 19. The recalls line up:
- Throttle software (06V441000), 1999-2001. Sensor issues, a dirty throttle housing or software could light a lamp and trigger limp-home mode. The campaign lists 170,099 passenger vehicles across several Volvos.
- Cooling fans. Recall 02V096000 replaced fans on 1999 cars that could be inadequate in a hot climate. Recall 04V451000 covers 1999-2001 cars whose fans could overheat and, rarely, start an engine fire; that one lists 149,799 vehicles and isn't S80-only.
- Front ball joints (00V238000), 1999-2000. They can loosen over time; dealers replace both.
- Driver air bag inflators (21V766000) on 2001-2006 S80s and 2001-2009 S60s, which may explode during deployment.
Second generation: 2007-2016 model years
Built from December 26, 2005 on the P3 platform, related to the V70 and XC60. Wikipedia lists a 6-speed Aisin automatic and a 6-speed Ford PowerShift dual-clutch, and says the T6 six-cylinder and all-wheel drive were dropped for 2016. It also earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick in 2007.
Only 128 complaints cover these ten years. The recalls are mostly electronics: wiper software in the central electronic module on 2007-2008 S80 and V70 cars (09V139000), the same module not signaling the fuel pump on 2008-2010 cars (09V343000), and front seat belt anchor cables on 2007-2016 cars (20V378000). The 2007 also has a power steering return hose that may have been routed wrong (11V378000), on 8,406 S80s.
Selling the S80 as it sits
- Have the VIN, mileage and symptoms ready. Note whether it's a T6 or AWD car.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where your S80 is. Garage, street or repair shop, and can it roll?
- Leave the parts on. If something has been removed, mention it, since that changes the offer.
- When the S80 gets picked up, keep your photo ID and the title close by. Plate rules vary; see after you sell.
Is it worth repairing?
Check the shop's estimate next to the price of a running S80 from your year. For a 1999-2001 car with throttle or cooling trouble, the two numbers often land close.
- Look up the VIN at NHTSA for open recalls, especially the air bag campaign.
- Overheating or a coolant leak? Read head gasket or overheating before you spend.
- Quote bigger than the car? See repairs cost more than it is worth.
Questions people ask
- Which S80 years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2000 has 318, the 1999 has 199 and the 2001 has 164, as of October 10, 2026. Those three years hold 681 of the S80's 954 complaints. Later S80 years show far fewer, partly since they've been driven for a shorter time.
- What does vehicle speed control mean on an S80 complaint?
- It is NHTSA's category for throttle and cruise problems. Recall 06V441000 applies to 1999-2001 S80s. A worn throttle sensor, a dirty throttle body or a software bug can turn on a warning light in those S80s and drop them into limp-home mode. Dealers loaded new software to fix it.
- Do you buy S80s with a cooling or overheating problem?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it overheats, won't start, or doesn't roll.
