Selling an old or dead Volvo S70
The S70 was sold in the US for only three model years, 1998 to 2000, yet owners filed 588 complaints about it with NHTSA. The single biggest group, 126, is about vehicle speed control, the throttle. Almost all of those come from the 1999 and 2000.

What the S70 was
Wikipedia says the S70 replaced the 850 sedan and was built from 1996 to 2000, 243,078 in all, at Torslanda, Ghent and Halifax. It sat on the P80 platform with the V70 wagon. Engines were 2.0 and 2.5-liter five-cylinders, with manual gearboxes or a 4-speed Aisin automatic, in front-drive or AWD. Wikipedia also notes that drive-by-wire throttle came to the non-turbo models when the 10-valve engines were replaced.
Known problems, year by year
Owners had sent NHTSA every S70 complaint counted here by October 10, 2026. They aren't a rating.
1998: brakes and lights
The 1998 has 215 complaints, the most of any year. Hydraulic brakes are named 54 times, nearly every brake complaint the S70 has. Exterior lighting is next with 28. Three recalls hit this year's lights and air bag:
- Headlight switch (99V235000). The switch can work inconsistently after long use. A second campaign, 04V504000, covers 1998-2000 cars whose switch may stop working.
- Front turn signals (00V405000), 1998-2000. Poor contact between bulb and socket; dealers replace both sides.
- Passenger air bag (99V236000). It may be too sensitive to static discharge; dealers add a ground wire.
These campaigns list between 97,000 and 245,894 vehicles each, so they cover other Volvos too, the V70 among them.
1999-2000: the throttle years
The 1999 has 205 complaints and the 2000 has 164. Speed control leads both, 60 and 65 times. Recall 06V441000 applies to 1999-2000 S70s. On an S70, a bad throttle sensor, a gummed-up throttle housing or a software fault could light a warning lamp and put the car in limp-home mode. The dealer fix was a software upgrade. Engine and engine cooling is named 34 times on the 1999 and 17 on the 2000.
One more recall touches only 1999 AWD sedans: the fuel filter bracket did not meet the federal fuel system standard, and dealers added a protection bracket (99V035000, 3,632 vehicles).
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recalls | Top three components |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1997 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | One each: electrical, speed control, brakes |
| 1998 | 215 | 10 | 16 | 4 | Hydraulic brakes 54, exterior lighting 28, electrical 23 |
| 1999 | 205 | 13 | 12 | 4 | Speed control 60, electrical 38, engine and cooling 34 |
| 2000 | 164 | 8 | 9 | 3 | Speed control 65, electrical 26, engine and cooling 17 |
A few complaints were filed under 1997, before the S70 appears in EPA data. Recalls span years, so that column totals more than six.
Repair it or let it go?
Compare the shop's S70 estimate with the going price of one that runs fine. For a car more than 25 years old, the quote usually wins.
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and ask a Volvo dealer about anything open.
- Brakes gone soft or seized? Read bad or seized brakes.
