Selling a dead or junk BMW 2 Series

Twelve of the 2 Series' 14 engine-cooling complaints are on 2015 and 2016 cars. In 2024, BMW recalled 2014-2016 228i models over the water pump and the plug connector that powers it, nearly a decade after those cars were built.

If yours is overheating, won't start or just costs more to fix than it is worth, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and there is free pickup anywhere in the US.

Which 2 Series is yours?

The name covers several cars. Wikipedia lists a rear-drive coupe and convertible (F22/F23), built from November 2013 to replace the 1 Series coupe and convertible. The second coupe (G42) was revealed in July 2021. It sits on the CLAR platform with the G20 3 Series and G22 4 Series, and it is built only at BMW's San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.

The Gran Coupe is a different car underneath. The F44, revealed in October 2019, uses the front-drive UKL2 platform. The F74 that replaced it was unveiled on October 15, 2024, with production at Leipzig from November 2024. EPA's US list holds coupes, convertibles and Gran Coupes; the Active Tourer minivan in Wikipedia's article is not in it.

Problems by model year group

2014-2016: cooling, fuel and head air bags

These three years hold 60 of the 125 complaints. The 2015 and 2016 both list engine and engine cooling as their top component (4 and 8). Recall 24V608000 is the one to match against that: a dealer checks both parts, replaces what needs it, and fits a shield. Its 720,796 vehicles cover 2014-2016 228i and 228xi cars plus many other BMW models, so the number is not the 2 Series' own.

The 2014's top complaint area is fuel and propulsion (3). Recall 15V189000 replaced the fuel pump on 2014 228i and M235i coupes, in an 18,054-vehicle campaign shared with the 3 and 4 Series. Two later campaigns, 24V288000 and 25V871000, replace head air bags on 2014-2015 coupes; both also include 3 and 4 Series cars.

2017-2021: tires, wheels and electrical

Five years add 36 complaints. The 2017's top area is tires (4), then wheels (2). The 2019 has a single complaint. Recall 19V352000 replaced knee air bags on 2019-2020 230i, M240i and M2 Competition coupes. Recall 21V091000 updated sunroof software on 2020-2021 Gran Coupes, because the roof could keep closing after the car was switched off or locked. Recall 21V554000 had dealers inspect seat belt retractors on 2021 230i and M240i coupes.

2022 on: starters and the new coupe

From 2022 to 2026 there are 29 complaints. The 2022 has 12, led by the electrical system (4). Two starter campaigns land here. Recall 25V636000 carries a PARK OUTSIDE warning for 2022 230i owners while they wait for a new starter. Recall 26V056000 replaces the starter on 2022-2023 2 Series coupes. Both campaigns include the Toyota Supra and other BMWs.

Smaller campaigns on newer cars: 23V039000 replaced rear side air bag cover panels on 804 coupes from 2023. Recall 23V770000 replaced the steering gear on 201 vehicles, including 2024 230i coupes. Recall 26V064000 replaced rear lights on 202 cars from 2026, all Gran Coupes.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Owner reports in NHTSA's database through October 10, 2026. A G42 coupe or F74 Gran Coupe has been out only a short while, so expect its totals to climb. A single campaign can appear on more than one row when it spans model years.

Fix it or sell it?

  1. Look the car up first on NHTSA's recall page. Water pump, starter and air bag campaigns are free at a BMW dealer.
  2. Overheating on a 2014-2016? Ask about recall 24V608000 before paying for a cooling repair. If the engine was run hot, read head gasket or overheating first.
  3. Compare the quote to the car. When a repair nears what a running 2 Series of the same year brings, selling it unrepaired often comes out ahead. What a junk car is worth explains the offer side.

Selling a 2 Series whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage and model: 228i, 230i, M235i, M240i, coupe, convertible or Gran Coupe.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Share the location and whether the car can roll. A low coupe on flat tires can still be winched aboard if the driver hears about it first. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it whole, wheels and all. Mention anything already taken off.
  5. Sign over the title and show ID at pickup. Plate rules change from state to state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which 2 Series years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2016 leads at 26, ahead of the 2015 (22), the 2017 (14), and the 2014 and 2022 (12 apiece), in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 data. The G42 and F74 cars are recent, so their counts are still early.
Is my 228i in the water pump recall?
A 2014-2016 228i or 228xi may be. Under recall 24V608000 a BMW dealer checks the coolant pump and the plug that feeds it, swaps either one if needed, and fits a shield, at no cost. With 720,796 vehicles across many BMW lines in that campaign, a VIN search on nhtsa.gov/recalls settles it.
My 2022 230i has a PARK OUTSIDE recall. What does that mean?
Recall 25V636000 flags the engine starter relay. Until the starter is swapped at a dealer, at no cost, BMW wants the car kept outdoors, clear of garages and houses.
Will you buy a 2 Series that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us what it does when you try to start it and where it is parked.
