The youngest US 1 Series is now a 2013. If yours has stopped running, or the repair list has grown longer than the car is worth, sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
What the US got
In the US, the 1 Series was a two-door. EPA data lists the 128i and 135i as coupes and convertibles plus the 1 Series M Coupe, for the 2008 through 2013 model years. Wikipedia says the coupe and convertible moved to the 2 Series name with the next generation, and the M2 replaced the 1 Series M Coupe in 2016. Elsewhere the 1 Series carried on as a hatchback and is now in its fourth generation, the F70, unveiled June 4, 2024.
NHTSA's file also holds 8 complaints filed under the 2007 model year, a year EPA does not list for the 1 Series.
Known problems by model year
2008-2009: air bag wiring and the first big counts
The 2008 has 87 complaints: air bags 25, fuel and propulsion system 10, gasoline fuel system 9. Four crashes and four fires are reported on that year. The 2009 has 79, led by air bags (20), the fuel system (13) and exterior lighting (12). None of the 11 recall campaigns tied to the 1 Series is filed under the fuel system.
Recalls that start in these years:
- 09V257: incorrect crimp connectors may have been used on the side air bag and belt tensioner wiring of 2,350 2008 1 Series and 3 Series cars.
- 10V254: new front seat belt retractor units on 2008-2011 1 Series cars, 31,935 vehicles.
- 13V044: a new positive battery cable connector, secured an improved way, on 2008-2012 coupes and convertibles. The 516,791-vehicle campaign includes 3 Series coupes and convertibles.
- 17V683 replaced the PCV valve heater on 2008-2011 128i cars. In March 2022, 22V119 superseded and expanded it, adding a wiring harness with fuse protection on 2008-2013 128i cars. That campaign counts 917,106 vehicles across the 1, 3 and 5 Series, X3, X5 and Z4.
2010-2012: VANOS bolts and the 2011 peak
The 2011 has 123 complaints, the most of any year. Air bags lead with 41, the engine is second with 24 and the electrical system third with 21. Seven of the 17 fires reported across all 1 Series years are on the 2011. The 2010 has 45 and the 2012 has 50, where the engine is second again with 13.
Two campaigns replace VANOS bolts. 14V176 replaced the four VANOS housing bolts on both units on 2010-2011 128i and 2011-2012 135i cars. 23V707, reported in October 2023, replaces the four VANOS bolts on 2010-2012 1 Series cars again. Both campaigns include 3 Series, 5 Series, Z4 or X3 models, so their 156,137 and 157,796 vehicle counts are not 1 Series counts.
Also on these years: 19V579 replaces the blower-regulator wiring harness, which may overheat, on 2008-2012 128i, 135i and 135is cars (41,981 vehicles), and 17V067 inspects and may replace the rear driveshaft CV joint on 2011-2012 135i and 1 Series M cars.
2013: the last year
The 2013 has 51 complaints, and 33 of them name air bags. 16V071 replaces the driver's frontal air bag module or inflator on 2008-2013 128i and 135i coupes and convertibles and the 1 Series M. 20V017 replaces the driver air bag on the same years. Both campaigns span many BMW models: 840,000 and 59,965 vehicles in all.

All years: 443 complaints, 11 crashes, 17 fires, 5 injured, no deaths, 10 tows.
Fix it, or sell the 1 Series as is?
Look at the written repair quote, then at the price a running 128i or 135i with similar year and miles brings. When those numbers are near each other, selling it broken usually makes more sense.
- Run the VIN. With 11 campaigns, including two rounds of VANOS bolts and a fused PCV harness, an open recall is worth checking. Open recall covers selling with one still open.
- Electrical gremlins or a burning smell? The blower-regulator harness (19V579) and battery cable (13V044) campaigns are the ones to ask a BMW dealer about. Electrical problems explains fix-or-sell for wiring trouble.
- High miles on an older coupe? Old or high mileage helps you decide what's worth fixing.
How to sell a 1 Series whole
- Before you call, find the VIN and mileage, and know what's wrong and if the wheels turn.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it's parked. On a convertible, say whether the top still closes. If it's in a tight garage or won't roll, mention that too. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Don't pull parts. The wheels, battery and catalytic converter should stay on, and let us know if something is already off.
- When we come for your 1 Series, have the title and photo ID out. Rules on plates differ by state; see after you sell.
Questions people ask
- Which 1 Series year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2011, with 123 as of October 10, 2026. It also has 7 of the 17 fires reported across all years. The 2008 (87) and 2009 (79) come next.
- Why do so many 1 Series complaints mention air bags?
- No reason is given, yet air bags come up most in each year from 2008 to 2013, with 160 complaints total. On 2008-2013 128i, 135i and 1 Series M cars, recalls 16V071 and 20V017 swap out the driver's air bag or its inflator. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you buy a 135i or 128i that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Say what's wrong with the 1 Series, if it rolls, and on a convertible, if the top shuts.
