Selling a broken or blown BMW M4

Nearly half of the BMW M4's 47 NHTSA complaints are filed on a single model year: the 2016, with 22. Seven of them name the engine and five the suspension, and that same year sits inside two separate driveshaft recalls.

If your M4 has a blown S55, a tired gearbox or crash damage, you can sell it unrepaired. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

First generation (F82/F83): 2015-2020 model years

Wikipedia says the first M4 was built from 2014 to June 2020 as a coupe (F82) and convertible (F83), replacing the E92/E93 M3 coupe and convertible. That M4 ran a 3.0-liter S55 twin-turbo six, paired with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed M-DCT dual-clutch. It was built in Dingolfing, and Wikipedia lists the F80 M3 as a related car.

These years hold 43 of the 47 complaints. The 2015 has 12, five naming the engine. The 2018 has six, and four of those name the fuel and propulsion system.

The recalls on these cars are mostly mechanical:

  • 15V782 (2015-2016): dealers inspected the driveshaft and replaced it as needed.
  • 16V653 (2015-2016): dealers replaced the rear sub-frame bolts. The campaign also covers the M2 and M3.
  • 18V713 (2016-2017 coupe and GTS, 2017 convertible): the joint between the driveshaft and flange may fail. Dealers replace the driveshaft. 2,661 vehicles in the campaign, M3 included.
  • 20V666 (2020): fuel injectors may have gone in without a damping part. Dealers inspect them and replace the injectors and fuel rail if it is missing.

Air bag and seat belt recalls also reach the 2017-2020 cars. Those campaigns span many BMW models, so their counts, such as 5,079 for the 19V352 knee air bag recall, are not M4 numbers.

Second generation (G82/G83): 2021 on

Wikipedia lists production from 2020 on, with a 3.0-liter S58 twin-turbo six on the CLAR platform and a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed ZF automatic. All-wheel drive (xDrive) arrived in 2021.

The newer cars have four complaints so far. Some of that is just because these cars haven't been around long. Recall 21V554 has dealers inspect seat belt retractors on 2021 cars, in a campaign of 21,537 across the 2 Series, 3 Series and 4 Series. Recall 25V643 covers a few 2026 M4 and 430i cars whose positive battery cables may not be connected properly to the power distribution box, which can lead to a stall and a fire.

Fix it or sell it?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. A driveshaft or sub-frame recall that was never done is free at a BMW dealer.
  2. Dual-clutch acting up on a 2015-2020? The dual-clutch guide covers the signs and the choice.
  3. S55 or S58 engine gone? Get a written quote, then weigh it against a running M4 of the same year. Blown engine walks through it.

Selling your M4 whole

  1. Gather the VIN, mileage, transmission type and what is wrong.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it sits and how low it is. A lowered car or a splitter changes how the truck loads it.
  4. Sell the whole car as it sits. List aftermarket parts, and say if the stock wheels or exhaust come with it.
  5. Pickup day: title, keys and your ID. After you sell covers plates by state.

Questions people ask

Which M4 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
It's the 2016. On October 10, 2026 it had 22 of the M4's 47 complaints, with seven about the engine and five about the suspension. The 2015 is next with 12. The G82 years are newer and have had fewer seasons for owners to report anything.
Was there a driveshaft recall on the M4?
Two. Recall 15V782 had dealers inspect and replace driveshafts on some 2015-2016 cars. Recall 18V713 covers 2016-2017 M4 coupes, M4 GTS coupes and 2017 convertibles, where the joint between the driveshaft and flange may fail; dealers replace the driveshaft. Both campaigns include the M3.
Will you buy an M4 with a blown engine or bad transmission?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us the problem, if the wheels turn, and if it sits low, because that affects how we load it.
My M4 has aftermarket wheels and a lowered suspension. Is that a problem?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits. When you request an offer, tell us what was changed and which stock parts you kept.
