Sell a wrecked or broken BMW X7

The BMW X7 breaks the usual pattern: one of its newest years has the most complaints. X7 owners had sent NHTSA 310 complaints by our October 10, 2026 count, and 62 are on the 2024, mostly service brakes (21) and electronic stability control (16). Usually the latest years trail, since owners have had them for less time.

About the X7

Wikipedia says X7 production started in December 2018 at BMW's plant in Greer, South Carolina, after BMW previewed it as the Concept X7 iPerformance at the 2017 Frankfurt show. It is also assembled in Thailand, India and Malaysia. The X7 rides on BMW's CLAR platform and is related to the X5, X6, XM and 7 Series. Engines are a 3.0-liter B58 turbo six and 4.4-liter N63 and S68 twin-turbo V8s, all with an 8-speed ZF automatic and all-wheel drive. EPA lists the xDrive40i, xDrive50i, M50i, M60i xDrive and Alpina XB7.

BMW's own Wikipedia entry calls the Greer plant BMW's highest-producing plant worldwide, at about 1,500 vehicles a day, and says an electric iX7 will be built there too.

Problems by model year

The X7 is still in its first generation, so these groupings follow the complaint pattern instead.

2019-2022: electrical, engine and starter

The 2019 has 47 complaints, led by the electrical system (17) and the engine (9). It also has 11 recall campaigns. The 2020 has 54, with power train and engine at 10 each and 3 fires. The 2021 has 47, led by the engine and power train (8 each). The 2022 drops to 20.

Recalls on these years that line up with those components:

  • 25V644: after repeated start attempts the starter motor may overheat from an electrical overload. Dealers replace it on 2019-2020 X7s. The campaign counts 145,102 vehicles across the X5, X6, 3, 7 and 8 Series, and includes cars already repaired under 24V576.
  • 24V576: an engine software update on 2019-2020 X5, X7 and other models, 105,588 vehicles.
  • 21V062: a new integrated brake system on some 2019-2021 cars. 893 vehicles across the 7 Series, 8 Series, X6 and others.

Smaller X7-only campaigns from these years: 19V386 (head air bags that may not have been aligned with the trim, 2019 xDrive40i and xDrive50i, 1,822 vehicles), 20V052 (rear reflex reflectors, 2020, 683 vehicles) and 20V514 (wrong tire information labels, 2021, 397 vehicles). Two camera campaigns, 19V684 and 21V096, update back-up camera software on 2019-2021 cars, and 22V267 reprograms the roof control unit on 2019-2023 cars.

2023-2026: brakes and stability control

The 2023 has 44 complaints with stability control (13) and service brakes (11) on top. The 2024 has 62 with service brakes (21) and stability control (16). The 2025 has 29, the two tied at 6 each. The 2026 has 7 so far.

The integrated brake system on these years is the subject of three campaigns. None is X7-only:

  • 24V104: a new system for 2023-2025 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles. 266,716 vehicles.
  • 24V739: a new integrated brake module for 2023-2024 X1, X5, X6, X7, XM and other models. 11,579 vehicles.
  • 26V422, reported July 1, 2026, inspects the system and replaces it if needed on 2023-2025 X7s and other models. 428 vehicles.

Also on these years: 22V725 (only one front parking light may stay lit, 2023, 3,315 vehicles), 23V471 and 23V622 (knee air bags on 2024 cars), 24V345 (front seat lower belts on 2025 cars) and 25V556 (a windshield that may not be sealed, letting water reach the power distribution box or a control unit, on 2026 cars). Fifteen more campaigns count toward the 33.

X7 complaints and recalls, year by year

Taken from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. Any campaign covering more than one year is listed under each, so 33 campaigns fill 55 spots in the column.

Repair, claim or sell?

An X7 is usually too new to call junk, so the question is often an insurance one. If the insurer totaled it, or offers a check and lets you keep the car, compare that against fixing it. Insurer totaled it and keep the check, sell unrepaired cover both cases.

  1. Check for open recalls by VIN. Brake, starter and air bag campaigns like those above are repaired by dealers at no charge.
  2. Brake or stability warnings on a 2023-2025? Ask a BMW dealer about 24V104, 24V739 and 26V422. Bad or seized brakes covers fix-or-sell.
  3. Electrical faults or water inside? See electrical problems and flood damage.
  4. Still financed or leased? Still owe on the loan and leased car explain the payoff step.

Selling your X7 whole

  1. Collect the VIN, mileage, what happened and whether it rolls. Have the lender's name if there is a loan.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where the X7 sits: a body shop lot, a tow yard, your driveway. If the suspension is down or a wheel is jammed after a crash, mention it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep the X7 whole. The wheels, battery and infotainment screen stay in. Tell us about anything missing.
  5. At pickup, have the title (or your payoff details) and a photo ID. Wipe your data first, and see after you sell for plates.

Questions people ask

Which BMW X7 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2024, with 62 as of October 10, 2026. Service brakes (21) and electronic stability control (16) lead that year. The 2020 has 54 and the 2019 and 2021 have 47 each. A 2024 has been with owners for only a short time, which makes that count stand out.
Has the 2023-2025 X7 been recalled for its brakes?
Three campaigns cover the integrated brake system: 24V104 (2023-2025), 24V739 (2023-2024) and 26V422 (2023-2025). Each covers other BMW models too, and 24V104 also includes MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles. To see which are still open on your SUV, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
I still owe money on my wrecked X7. Can I sell it?
Usually, yes, though the lender must be paid in full before it releases the title. See our still-owe-on-the-loan guide for the steps. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
