Selling a dead or junk BMW X6
The X6 is built in Greer, South Carolina, alongside the X5, whose platform it shares. Its recall record shows the link. Of the 18 X6 campaigns described in detail in our NHTSA data, 13 name the X5 too, and the X6 carries 48 recall campaigns against 216 owner complaints.

Three generations, three complaint stories
Wikipedia supplies the build dates and engines. We split the model years ourselves, because production years overlap the model years by a few months.
| Generation | Built | Engines and gearbox | Model years counted | Complaints | Fires reported |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E71 | Dec. 2007-2014 | 3.0 six turbo (gas or diesel), 3.0 tri-turbo diesel, 4.4 V8 turbo; 6-speed automatic | 2007-2014 | 150 | 9 |
| F16 | 2014-2019 | 3.0 six turbo (gas or diesel), 4.4 V8 turbo; 8-speed automatic | 2015-2019 | 30 | 3 |
| G06 | Aug. 2019-present | 2.0 B48 four, 3.0 B58 six, 4.4 N63 twin-turbo V8; ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic | 2020-2027 | 36 | 0 |
E71 (2008-2014): the engine years
These years hold 150 of the 216 complaints and 9 of the 12 fires. From 2009 through 2012, engine leads each model year, and from 2009 through 2013 it adds up to 48 of the X6's 53 engine complaints. The 2012 alone has 16.
Several campaigns hit the engine bay. Recall 11V521000 replaced the auxiliary water pump on 2008-2011 X6s with 8- or 12-cylinder turbo engines; its 32,084 vehicles also include the 5 Series, 7 Series and X5. Recall 18V248000 replaced the electric auxiliary water pump on X6 xDrive50i and X6 M models, in a 47,806-vehicle campaign shared with the 550i, 750i, 760Li and X5. Recall 14V176000 replaced VANOS housing bolts on 2011-2012 cars, in a campaign of 156,137 that spans a long list of BMW models.
Two more are X5-and-X6 campaigns. Recall 16V746000 replaced the fuel pump module on 2008-2011 cars (136,188 vehicles). Recall 17V138000 replaced the front driveshaft on 2011-2014 X6s and the 2011 ActiveHybrid X6 (121,909 vehicles).
Then there are the air bags. On the 2013, 15 of 26 complaints name them. Five passenger air bag inflator campaigns on these years carry a DO NOT DRIVE warning: 16V364000, 17V020000, 18V030000, 19V017000 and 20V016000. A few are limited to cars ever registered in listed states, which only a VIN search will settle.
F16 (2015-2019): a quiet stretch
Five model years add only 30 complaints, and no component reaches more than 3 in any one year. The recall that stands out is 19V823000. On 2015-2019 X6s, the rear seat lower anchor bars used for child seats needed a reinforcing bracket welded to the body. Its 32,760 vehicles are all X6s by the summary.
G06 (2020 on): software, starters and brakes
The 2020 lists 11 recall campaigns. Recall 24V576000 updated engine software on a 105,588-vehicle campaign that includes the X5, X7, 3, 7 and 8 Series. Recall 25V644000 followed with new starters, because the starter could overheat after repeated attempts; it covers 145,102 vehicles, and cars already fixed under 24V576 are included. Recall 22V267000 reprogrammed the sunroof control unit on 2020-2022 cars.
Every one of the 2024's 9 complaints names electronic stability control (5) or service brakes (4). Recall 24V104000 replaces the integrated brake system on 2024-2025 X6s. That campaign counts 266,716 vehicles from three brands: BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce.
Complaints and recalls by model year
These X6 numbers come from NHTSA, pulled October 10, 2026. A 2025 G06 has had a year or two of filings, but the E71 has had well over a decade. X6 campaigns often cover a run of years, so the grouped rows show how many applied in a single year, low to high.
| Model year | Complaints | Fires | Recall campaigns | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2007 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Air bags (1) |
| 2008 | 5 | 0 | 9 | Air bags (2) |
| 2009 | 22 | 1 | 11 | Engine (9) |
| 2010 | 19 | 4 | 10 | Engine (7) |
| 2011 | 32 | 3 | 13 | Engine (11) |
| 2012 | 34 | 0 | 10 | Engine (16) |
| 2013 | 26 | 1 | 6 | Air bags (15) |
| 2014 | 11 | 0 | 4 | Air bags (6) |
| 2015-2019 | 30 | 3 | 1-4 a year | No component above 3 |
| 2020 | 9 | 0 | 11 | Electrical system (4) |
| 2021 | 7 | 0 | 7 | Forward collision avoidance (2) |
| 2022-2023 | 6 | 0 | 1 a year | One or two each |
| 2024 | 9 | 0 | 5 | Electronic stability control (5) |
| 2025-2027 | 5 | 0 | 0-4 a year | One or two each |
Fix it or sell it?
- Check the VIN at NHTSA. With 48 campaigns on the books, an older X6 can have more than one open. Recall repairs are free at a BMW dealer.
- E71 with a bad engine? Get the diagnosis and repair cost on paper, then look up a running X6 from that year to compare. The blown engine guide walks through the decision.
- Brake warnings on a 2024-2025? Ask a dealer about recall 24V104000 before you decide anything.
If the fix costs most of what a working X6 would sell for, selling it broken usually wins. What a junk car is worth explains what moves the number.
Selling the X6 whole
- Gather the VIN, mileage, and the trim: xDrive35i, xDrive50i, X6 M, ActiveHybrid and so on.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the location, whether a shop lot, a curb or a garage, and whether the X6 rolls on four wheels. That decides the truck. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole. Tell us about anything already pulled.
- For the X6 pickup, give the driver the title and your ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.

Questions people ask
- Which X6 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2012 tops the list at 34. Behind it sit the 2011 (32), 2013 (26), 2009 (22) and 2010 (19), per NHTSA's file on October 10, 2026. Later X6s are younger, so their small counts partly reflect fewer years in service.
- My X6 has a do-not-drive air bag notice. Is selling it an option?
- Yes. On 2008-2014 X6s, five passenger air bag campaigns say not to drive it, and dealers fix it free. Start with your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If you sell instead, the car does not need to be driven: we offer free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Is the 2024 X6 brake recall only for the X6?
- No. Campaign 24V104000 covers 266,716 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles from 2023-2025. It lists 2024-2025 X6s; the remedy is a new integrated brake unit at no cost.
- Do I need to fix the engine before selling?
- No. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits; just tell us what is wrong and whether it rolls.
