Selling a wrecked, dead or junk BMW iX

Owners reported a crash in 34 of the iX's 117 NHTSA complaints, close to three in ten. They also reported 19 injuries and 20 tows. A complaint is the owner's own account; the file does not say what caused each crash.

One generation, built in Dingolfing

Wikipedia lists a single iX generation so far, in production since July 2021 at BMW's Dingolfing plant in Germany, where it is built alongside cars with combustion engines. It is a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive SUV with a single-speed transmission. Wikipedia names the iX5 as its North American successor. EPA has iX model years from 2022 to 2026, in xDrive40, xDrive45, xDrive50, M60 and M70 versions.

2022-2023: the most recalls

The first two model years carry 11 and 12 of the 12 campaigns. The 2022 has 30 complaints, led by the electrical system (9). The 2023 has 38, and 11 of them name the air bags.

That air bag count lines up with recall 23V079000: the driver's air bag may have been made wrong and may not deploy as intended, and dealers replace it. Its 15,803 vehicles include 2022-2023 X1 xDrive28i SUVs as well as iXs. A separate campaign, 22V240000, reprogrammed the air bag control unit because the warning light might not come on; its 3,166 vehicles are all iXs.

Battery campaigns on these years:

  • 22V541000 (DO NOT DRIVE, PARK OUTSIDE): the battery pack may be damaged inside and could short. BMW said not to drive or charge until it is fixed. 367 vehicles, iX and i4.
  • 22V944000: high-voltage battery control software update. 14,086 vehicles across the iX, i4 and i7.
  • 23V295000: the battery cell monitoring circuit may be badly secured, and dealers replace it. 31 vehicles, iX and i4.
  • 23V449000: the combined charging unit is replaced. 69 vehicles, iX, i4 and i760.

Recall 23V409000 is the iX's own: on 2022-2024 xDrive50 and M60 models, the driver could switch cruise control back on by accident while turning the wheel at low speed. Dealers update the software. Its 11,180 vehicles are all iXs, and the file holds 10 complaints about vehicle speed control.

2024: brakes and electrical

The 2024 has 33 complaints, with 13 crashes, 10 injuries and the file's only 2 fires. Electrical system and service brakes lead at 7 each. Four campaigns cover it, including 25V395000, where the motor software could switch off the high-voltage system and leave the car without drive. That fix goes out over the air or at a dealer, and its 71,286 vehicles span the i4, iX, i7 and i5.

2025-2026: early days

The 2025 has 13 complaints and one recall: 25V470000, for cell modules that may have been put together wrong, stressing the module frame; dealers swap the affected modules. It covers 136 vehicles across the iX, i7 and i4. The 2026 has 3 complaints. These cars are new, so their counts will likely grow.

Complaints and recalls by model year

These are NHTSA's figures on October 10, 2026. Every iX is young, and the 2025 and 2026 cars have barely started piling up owner reports. Since most iX campaigns cover two or three model years, the same ones show up more than once in the recall column.

Repair it or sell it?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA. Several iX campaigns touch the battery and drive system, and the repairs are free.
  2. Battery or drive fault out of warranty? Get a written diagnosis first. The EV battery guide covers the questions to ask.
  3. After a crash, the insurer may total it or hand you a check. Wrecked or totaled and keep the check, sell unrepaired explain both paths.

Selling an iX whole

  1. Have the VIN, mileage and version (xDrive40, xDrive50, M60 and so on), plus what is wrong.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the iX is and if it can roll in Neutral. A damaged EV that will not budge needs a different truck, so the driver should hear about it beforehand. Pickup is free anywhere in the US. If your car has an open park-outside recall, say so.
  4. Leave it whole, charging cable included.
  5. Have the title and your ID on hand when the driver comes. If you still owe on it, read still owe on the loan first.

Questions people ask

Which iX model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2023, at 38 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 data. The 2024 has 33 and the 2022 has 30. The 2025 and 2026 cars have been sold for only a short time, so their small numbers are not a verdict.
Is there a do-not-drive recall on the iX?
Yes, a small one. Recall 22V541000 covers 367 iX and i4 vehicles from 2022-2023 where the high-voltage pack could be damaged inside. BMW asked owners to stop driving and charging, and to leave the car parked outdoors, until the dealer fix. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy an iX after a crash or with a dead battery?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Explain the damage, whether the wheels turn, and the address it sits at.
Can the iX drive motor recall be fixed over the air?
Recall 25V395000 says the electric drive motor software will be updated over the air or by a dealer, free of charge. It covers 2022-2024 iX models along with the i4, i7 and i5.
