Selling a damaged BMW XM
Two of the XM's nine recall campaigns replace knee air bags, and a third covers a tailgate panel that can come loose. Against that, NHTSA had just 11 owner complaints on the XM by October 10, 2026, none reporting a crash, fire or injury.

By model year
| Model year | Complaints | Recall campaigns | Most-named components |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 2 | 6 | Stability control 1, service brakes 1 |
| 2024 | 7 | 6 | Service brakes 2, wheels 2, steering 1 |
| 2025 | 2 | 0 | Speed control 1, electrical 1 |
The 2026 has none so far. One complaint reports a tow. Owners haven't had a 2025 or 2026 for long, so its number stays small at this point.
The XM, 2023-2026
This is a single generation. BMW showed the concept at Art Basel in Miami Beach on 29 November 2021, Wikipedia says, and production began in December 2022 at the Greer, South Carolina plant. It pairs a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor, an 8-speed automatic and a 29.5 kWh battery.
Air bags and belts
Recalls 23V471000 (1,981 vehicles) and 23V622000 (2,352) both replace knee air bags. 24V345000 has dealers inspect and replace the front lower seat belts (3,256). All three also cover the X5, X6 and X7.
Body and exhaust
Recall 24V139000 lists only the XM. On 267 2024 cars, the tailgate panel may detach because of poor adhesive bonding during manufacturing. Recall 23V294000 covers just 5 vehicles, split between the X7 M60i and the XM: exhaust-to-converter fasteners that may not have been tightened.
Brakes
BMW's integrated brake system is behind four XM campaigns (24V104000, 24V739000, 24V697000, 26V422000). Only 24V104000 is large, at 266,716 vehicles spread over three brands. Service brakes are also the most-named complaint, at 3.
Repair or sell
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first. Each campaign has a free dealer fix.
- Hybrid system warning? See hybrid battery failed.
- Air bags out after a crash? Read airbags deployed, then compare the quote with a running XM's price.
Selling it whole
- Have the XM's VIN, its mileage and the problem.
- Get an offer, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Explain where the XM is and if it can roll onto a truck.
- Leave it complete, wheels and battery included.
- Have the title, ID and keys at pickup. Plates: after you sell.
Questions people ask
- Which XM year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2024, with 7 of 11 as of October 10, 2026. The 2023 and 2025 have 2 each. The XM is new, so owners have had only months to report.
- Is there a recall just for the XM?
- Yes, one. Campaign 24V139000 covers 267 2024 XMs whose tailgate panel may come loose because of poor adhesive bonding. The other eight also cover other BMWs, so their vehicle counts are not XM counts.
- Will you buy a wrecked XM?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us what was hit and whether it rolls.
