Selling a Cadillac Catera that won't run
Of the 465 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Catera, 151 are about the engine and engine cooling. That's about one in three. Nothing else comes close: the electrical system is a distant second at 49.

A Cadillac built in Germany
The Catera was not built in Detroit. Wikipedia says Opel assembled it in Rüsselsheim, Germany, on GM's V platform, and that it is related to the Opel Omega. Cadillac first showed it at the 1994 Detroit Auto Show as the LSE concept, pitched as an entry-level car to take on imported sedans.
Every Catera has the same drivetrain: a 3.0-liter L81 V6 driving the rear wheels through a 4-speed 4L30-E automatic. That transmission was made at GM's plant in Strasbourg, France. The car got a facelift for 2000-2001, and the CTS replaced it.
What owners reported, year by year
There is one Catera generation, so the useful split is before and after the facelift. We tallied these from NHTSA's file on Oct. 10, 2026.
1997-1999: most of the file
Of 465 Catera complaints, 366 land in these three years. In each one, engine and engine cooling is the top issue: 65 on the 1997, 41 on the 1998 and 24 on the 1999. That's 130 engine and cooling complaints in three years.
The 1998 also shows 16 suspension complaints and 11 about tires. The 1999 has the most fires reported of any Catera year, 4, against 3 on the 1997.
2000-2001: the facelift years
Complaints drop to 67 on the 2000 and 30 on the 2001. On the 2000 the order changes: the electrical system leads with 17, ahead of the engine at 14, and 8 complaints name the air bags. On the 2001 the engine is back on top, but only with 7.
Two more complaints are filed under a 2002 model year, which EPA's data doesn't list for the Catera. One names speed control and one names exterior lighting.
No recalls to lean on
NHTSA's data shows no recall campaigns for any Catera year. That means a recall check is unlikely to turn up a free dealer repair for whatever is wrong with yours. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup anyway; it takes a minute.
Complaints by model year
Tallied by us from the NHTSA owner-complaint download dated Oct. 10, 2026. With zero recall campaigns in every year, there's no recall column.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injured | Component named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1997 | 163 | 8 | 3 | 8 | Engine and engine cooling (65) |
| 1998 | 123 | 6 | 1 | 4 | Engine and engine cooling (41) |
| 1999 | 80 | 4 | 4 | 5 | Engine and engine cooling (24) |
| 2000 | 67 | 5 | 1 | 4 | Electrical system (17) |
| 2001 | 30 | 4 | 0 | 2 | Engine and engine cooling (7) |
| 2002 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Speed control (1), exterior lighting (1) |
Across all years, owners reported 27 crashes, 9 fires and 23 injuries, and no deaths. A complaint is what an owner told NHTSA; it is not a finding about the car. Some of the dip on later Cateras may just be that owners had fewer years to report them.
Fix it, or let it go?
The newest Catera is a 2001. Whatever the problem, the question is the same: is the shop's number near what a Catera in running shape fetches? If so, letting it go unrepaired usually makes more sense.

Selling your Catera whole
- Write down your Catera's VIN and mileage, what stopped working, and if it can be pushed.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot it's parked in, from curbside to carport. The truck meets the Catera there.
- Don't pull anything off. The Catera goes as one piece; note any missing items up front.
- When the driver arrives, show your ID and sign the title over. Your state decides what happens to the Catera's plates; after you sell covers it.
