Selling an old Cadillac Fleetwood

In 1988 the Fleetwood drew 5 complaints to NHTSA and 11 recall campaigns. Across every year it adds up to 30 recall campaigns against 215 complaints, an unusual ratio. NHTSA's file doesn't explain it, but the campaigns vary widely in size: one counts 1,755,897 vehicles across many GM cars, while others cover only a few hundred limousines.

Two very different Fleetwoods

Wikipedia says the Fleetwood name came from a coachbuilder long tied to Cadillac and became a stand-alone model line in 1985. Under it are two cars that share almost nothing.

1985-1992, front-wheel drive. Built at Orion Assembly in Michigan on GM's C-body, with a 4-speed TH-440-T4 automatic. The aluminum 4.1-liter HT-4100 V8 gave way to the 4.5-liter HT-4500 for 1988, and the 200 hp 4.9-liter HT-4900 arrived for 1991. A 4.3-liter diesel V6 is also listed.

1993-1996, rear-wheel drive. Built at Arlington Assembly in Texas on the D-body, related to the Buick Roadmaster, with a 5.7-liter V8 and a 4-speed 4L60 automatic. After 1996 Cadillac retired the line as GM ended its full-frame rear-drive sedans.

Known problems by generation

Front-drive years (1985-1992): brakes and cruise control

These years hold 117 complaints, counting one filed under 1984. Hydraulic brakes stand out on 1989-1991: 6, 14 and 5 complaints, with 14 of the 1990's 32. The only death in the Fleetwood file is on a 1987.

The recalls from these years:

  • 89V102 (1984-1988): the cruise control servo's small nylon bushing might work loose, causing sudden jumps in engine speed or the engine running on after shut-off. The campaign counts 1,755,897 vehicles across many GM cars, not just the Fleetwood.
  • 86V036 and 86V056 (1986): under-dash wiring that could keep the throttle from returning, and a headlight switch prone to flickering or cutting the lamps.
  • 87V168 (1987) and 87V185 (1988): a transmission manual valve link and a rear shoulder belt retractor.
  • 94V199 (1991-1993): an upper transaxle oil cooler hose that can pull out of its coupling, in a 403,273-vehicle campaign.

Several campaigns cover limousines built on the Fleetwood: rear brake cylinders too small to stop within the federal limit (91V011, 91V101 and 91V094, each under 250 vehicles), missing labels on Empire Coach limousines (90V093) and missing belts for rear-facing seats (90V050).

Rear-drive years (1993-1996): seat belts, then a run of recalls

These four years hold the other 98 complaints. The 1993 leads the whole file with 35, and 10 of them name the seat belts. On the 1994, the engine leads with 5.

The 1994-1996 recalls include an engine oil cooler hose that could chafe against the steering gear and leak oil onto the engine (94V049), fuel tank strap fasteners that could let the tank sag onto the road (94V210), an accelerator pedal with too much friction in the cold (95V082), front lower ball joint nuts not torqued right (96V018 and 96V019) and wheel lug nuts left loose (96V245). Their vehicle counts may include other GM models.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Our tally of NHTSA's owner reports, Oct. 10, 2026; multi-year recalls show under each year. The 1984 row is filed under the Fleetwood name even though EPA's data starts at 1985.

Totals: 28 crashes, 15 fires, 34 injuries and 1 death. Later years usually show fewer complaints just from being younger, but the newest Fleetwood is 30, so that hardly applies.

Restore it, or sell it whole?

A Fleetwood that runs and is solid may suit someone who wants to keep it on the road; our old project car guide covers that route. One that has sat with flat tires, a seized engine or rust in the floors is a different story. See sitting for years for what to check before you put money in.

You can still enter the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

How to sell your Fleetwood whole

  1. Find the VIN and title. On cars this old the title is often the hard part; selling with no title helps if it's lost.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it's parked and if the wheels still turn. A long sedan in a tight garage or backyard is fine; just say so, so the right truck comes.
  4. Leave it complete, chrome and all, and mention parts someone has taken off.
  5. Give the driver your Fleetwood's title and keys. Plate rules vary by state; check after you sell.

Questions people ask

Why does the Fleetwood have so many recalls for so few complaints?
NHTSA's file doesn't give a reason, but many campaigns cover far more than the Fleetwood. One cruise control recall counts 1,755,897 vehicles across 1984-1988 GM cars. Several others cover limousine conversions built on the car, some with only a few hundred vehicles. The 1988 shows 11 recall campaigns and just 5 complaints.
Which Fleetwood years are rear-wheel drive?
The 1993-1996 cars. Wikipedia lists them on the D-body, built in Arlington, Texas, with a 5.7-liter V8 and a 4-speed 4L60 automatic. The 1985-1992 cars are front-wheel drive.
Which Fleetwood year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1993, with 35 as of October 10, 2026. Ten of those name the seat belts. The 1990 is next with 32, and 14 of those name the hydraulic brakes.
Will you take a Fleetwood that has sat for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, even a Fleetwood on flat tires with a battery long dead. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
