Selling a broken-down Cadillac XT4

The XT4's busiest complaint year is its second-to-last. The 2024 has 31 of the 107 complaints owners have filed with NHTSA, in the October 10, 2026 tally, more than the 2019 that launched it (20). Cadillac ended North American production in January 2025, so there will be no newer XT4s to spread the record across.

One engine, one transmission, seven years

Wikipedia says the XT4 went on sale in the fall of 2018 as a 2019 model, built at GM's Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. Every US car pairs the 2.0-liter LSY turbo four with a 9-speed 9T50 automatic; buyers chose front- or all-wheel drive. The XT4 sits on GM's E2XX platform; the 2021-on Buick Envision is related. After the 2025 model year it was dropped in North America with no direct replacement, and Fairfax was retooled to build the next Chevrolet Bolt.

With one generation and one powertrain, the useful split is by model year.

2019-2020: engine complaints and five recalls

The launch years have 38 complaints. The engine is the top complaint on the 2019 (7 of 20) and shares the lead on the 2020 (3). The 2019 also has 4 power train and 4 exterior lighting complaints. The 2020 adds 3 about service brakes.

These are the most-recalled XT4 years. The 2019 has three campaigns and the 2020 has five:

  • 20V668000 (2019-2020): bolts may be missing from the accumulator in the start-stop transmission; dealers inspect it and replace it if so. The 194,105-vehicle count spans a long list of GM models.
  • 22V868000 (2019-2020): on cars with optional Surround Vision, the video processing module may lose contact with the rearview camera. Dealers update or replace the module. This one, 10,199 vehicles, is XT4 only.
  • 21V649000 (2019-2021): rear seat belt retractors that may have loose or missing fasteners, shared with the Malibu (402 vehicles).
  • 20V588000 (2020): a dirty sensor connection on the XT4's electronic brake boost module; dealers put in a new module (3,677 vehicles across six GM models).
  • 21V115000 (2020): dealers inspect and, if needed, replace the tires (33,838 vehicles across many GM models).

2021-2023: the quiet stretch

Three years, 28 complaints. The 2021 has 12, led by the fuel and propulsion system (4). The 2022 has only 4. The 2023 has 12, with power train and forward collision avoidance at 3 each. The 2022 has one campaign, a driver's seat cushion frame that may have a bad weld in the power tilt mechanism (22V359000, 221 vehicles). The 2023 has none.

2024-2025: the late rise

The 2024's 31 complaints lead with service brakes (7), then fuel and propulsion (6) and engine (4), and 2 of them report a crash. The 2025 has 10, half of them electrical. Its recall is small but it matters: on 25 vehicles, the instrument panel cover may be missing the perforation that lets the passenger air bag deploy properly (24V795000). The 2024's recall is a wrong owner's manual in the glove box (24V575000, 22 vehicles).

Worth fixing?

Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first. On a 2019-2020, the transmission accumulator and the camera module are the open items to rule out. On a 2025, check the air bag panel campaign.

For any other XT4 repair, hold the written quote up against the price a running XT4 of the same year brings. Our blown engine guide helps when the engine is the problem, and bad brakes when it's the brakes. A dash of warnings with no clear cause belongs in electrical problems.

Selling the XT4 as it sits

Questions people ask

Which XT4 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2024, holding 31 of 107 in the October 10, 2026 data. The 2019 has 20 and the 2020 has 18. The 2025 sits at 10, but it is the youngest XT4 and has had the shortest time to draw reports.
Is the XT4 still made?
Not for North America. Wikipedia says production ended in January 2025 after the 2025 model year, with no direct replacement, and Fairfax Assembly was retooled for the next Chevrolet Bolt. The XT4 is still sold in China.
Will you buy an XT4 with a dead engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Let us know where your XT4 sits and if it rolls.
