Selling a damaged or dead Cadillac XT5
Four of every ten XT5 complaints on file with NHTSA belong to one model year: the 2017, the first XT5, with 124 of 307. The recalls run the other way. The 2017 has one recall campaign; the 2020 alone has five.

Two generations, one built here
Wikipedia lists the first-generation XT5 from January 2016, built at GM's Spring Hill plant in Tennessee on the C1XX platform. It replaced the SRX. US models used a 3.6-liter LGX V6, with a 2.0-liter LSY four also listed, and 2017-2019 models used the 8-speed AF50-8 automatic. The 2017 was an IIHS Top Safety Pick when fitted with the optional collision prevention systems.
A second generation arrived in 2024, built in Shanghai, China, with a 2.0-liter mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. EPA's data also lists XT5 hearse and limo versions, built in front- and all-wheel drive.
What owners reported, and what was recalled
2017-2019: most of the complaints, one recall
These three years hold 222 of the 307 complaints. On the 2017, "unknown or other" leads with 21, then power train with 16 and electrical with 15. On the 2018, engine and steering tie at 10. On the 2019, steering leads with 7.
Only one recall touches these years. Recall 16V802 covers 2017 XT5s built April 16 to May 9, 2016, plus a few GMC Acadias: dealers inspect the front brake calipers and replace them as needed. The campaign counts 1,844 vehicles.
2020-2022: few complaints, many recalls
Complaints fall to 23, 19 and 10, a total of 52. Recalls pile up instead:
- 2020: curtain air bag modules (20V446), a fuel pump with a plastic burr in its jet nozzle (20V639), and two tire recalls (20V684 and 21V115). Each campaign covers several GM models.
- 2020-2021: 22V709, rear camera cables on cars with optional Surround Vision. Its 95,231 vehicles include the XT6 and Acadia.
- 2021: 21V422, fuel supply lines that may not be seated.
- 2022: 22V427, a loosely tightened left-rear toe link; 22V446, a fuel tank rollover valve on all-wheel-drive models.
2023-2026: small batches
The newest years have 33 complaints between them, with the power train named most on the 2023, 2024 and 2025. The recalls here are often tiny. Recall 23V043 covers just 10 vehicles whose right-front half-shaft may come apart from the transmission. Recall 22V708 swaps an illegible label on 24. Recall 23V681 covers 42 2024 models whose windshield may lack its bonding sealant. Recall 24V311 covers 74 2024 XT5s whose driver air bag cushion may tear.
The bigger two are 23V172, a wrong transmission sun gear on 2022-2023 models, and 24V459, a dash cluster that can stay dark when hazards, high beams or turn signals are on on 2023-2025 XT5s. The 2025 has only 6 complaints, but they report 2 crashes and 6 injuries. Those late models have had only a year or two for owners to write in.

Fix it or sell it?
Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before anything else. Because so many XT5 recalls cover a few dozen cars, the only way to know if yours is one of them is the VIN. An open recall doesn't block a sale; see open recall.
When an XT5 has been in a crash, get a written estimate from the shop or insurer. Then check it against the price a running XT5 of that year brings. Our wrecked car guide covers that decision. For a gearbox that slips or flares, read bad transmission.
Selling your XT5 whole
- Have the VIN, mileage and the problem handy. Note FWD or AWD.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked. Driveway, collision shop or tow lot, the truck goes to it.
- Leave it as is. Wheels, battery and converter stay on. Mention any parts already pulled.
- Hand over the signed XT5 title and show your ID. If a loan is still open, read still owe on the loan first.

Questions people ask
- Which XT5 year has the most complaints?
- The 2017, the first model year, with 124 of 307 as of October 10, 2026. The 2018 has 66 and the 2019 has 32. No year since passes 23. A 2024 or 2025 XT5 is still new, so its low number doesn't tell you much yet.
- Is there a transmission recall on the XT5?
- Yes. Recall 23V172 covers some 2022-2023 XT5s whose transmission may have been built with the wrong sun gear. Dealers replace the sun gears free. The 8,744-vehicle campaign also includes the XT6, Acadia, Blazer and Traverse.
- My XT5's rear camera went black. Is that a recall?
- It might be. Recall 22V709 covers some 2020-2021 XT5s with the optional Surround Vision feature, whose camera cable connectors may have been crimped wrong. An XT5 gets new cables from a dealer at no charge. Check the XT5's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Do you buy an XT5 after a crash or with a dead engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes crossovers. Pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us what happened and where it's parked.
