Selling a Chevrolet City Express van

A City Express that won't start, or one with a worn-out CVT, can still be sold in one piece. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and free pickup anywhere in the US covers a small cargo van as easily as a sedan.

Nissan built this van, so both of its recalls came from Nissan. Check them by VIN before you sell, since an open one is a free repair.

A Nissan with a bowtie

The City Express is a Nissan NV200 with Chevrolet badges, sold in the US and Canada and never as a GMC. It was shown at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show, went on sale that fall as a 2015 model, and Chevrolet stopped selling it in 2018. Nissan built it at its Cuernavaca plant in Mexico, where NV200 production for North America started in 2013. Our Nissan NV200 page covers the Nissan side.

Every one has the same drivetrain: a 2.0-liter four, a CVT and front-wheel drive. The EPA rates both the 2015 and the 2018 at 24 city, 26 highway and 25 combined. GM's owner's manual lists 4-5/8 quarts of oil with the filter and a 14.5-gallon fuel tank.

Recalls and a GM wiring program

16V244, passenger air bag (2015-2016). The occupant sensor can mistake an adult for a child, or decide the seat is empty, and switch off the passenger's front air bag. Nissan's recall covers 3,296,947 vehicles, almost all of them Nissan and Infiniti models. On May 2, 2016, GM told Chevrolet dealers to stop delivering affected vans; dealers replace the sensor's control unit for free. The complaints match it: half of the ten on the 2015 are air bag reports, and one owner saw "Passenger Air Bag Off" light up at start-up.

25V676, stalling (2015-2018). Filed in October 2025. A fuel tank temperature sensor harness may be routed wrong. That can damage its wires and short out the fuel pump fuse, and a blown fuse can stall the engine. Its count of 173,301 vehicles takes in Nissan NV200 vans and taxis along with the City Express. Dealers reroute the harness or replace the fuel pump assembly.

GM program 15169, crank but no start (2015). A reversed wire in the engine harness can stop the computer from sending spark at start-up. The check engine light comes on with codes U0100, U1000 and B2193. The free fix ran through March 31, 2017.

Complaints and recalls by model year

From NHTSA's files, October 10, 2026. NHTSA's recall file doesn't list the 2017 under 25V676, but the recall notice names 2015-2018 City Express vans, so check a 2017 by VIN too.

No complaints on the 2016 or 2017 means nobody filed one. It doesn't prove those vans had no problems.

Fix it or sell it?

If it stalls or won't restart, rule out recall 25V676 before paying for a diagnosis. If the CVT is failing, get a written repair price and compare it with what a running City Express brings; our CVT failure guide explains the symptoms. When the repair is close to the van's running value, selling it unrepaired usually makes more sense.

How to sell it

  1. Have ready the VIN, the mileage and a note on what's wrong.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Mention the van's location and if it can roll.
  4. Leave it whole. Mention anything already removed.
  5. Once it's on the truck, the City Express title is signed over and your ID shown. For plates and insurance, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Is the City Express the same van as the Nissan NV200?
Yes. Chevrolet sold a badge-engineered NV200 in the US and Canada and called it the City Express. It was never sold as a GMC. Both came from Nissan's plant in Cuernavaca with the same 2.0-liter engine and CVT.
Who handled recalls on the City Express, Chevrolet or Nissan?
Nissan filed both campaigns. For the passenger air bag recall, 16V244, GM sent the notices to City Express owners, and GM's own number for it is 43430. To learn if your van still needs either repair, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
My City Express stalled and won't restart. What should I check?
Run the VIN for recall 25V676. A misrouted harness can short the fuel pump fuse, and a blown fuse stops the engine. On a 2015 that cranks without starting, the wiring fault behind GM program 15169 is another possibility, though that free repair ended March 31, 2017.
Will you buy a City Express with a dead CVT?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes small vans. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, and you can leave any shelving or partition in place.
