Selling a junk or non-running Chrysler 300

Two model years carry most of the weight. The 2005 and 2006 Chrysler 300 hold 2,875 of the 7,151 complaints owners have filed with NHTSA. The thirteen model years from 2011 to 2023 add up to 1,789.

Three eras of the 300 in NHTSA's file

Complaint totals run through October 10, 2026 and record what owners told NHTSA; they don't grade the car. Generation dates and hardware come from Wikipedia.

2005-2010: air bags and the 42RLE

The 2006 is the peak year at 1,750 complaints: engine 305, power train 304, air bags 294. The 2005 has 278 air bag complaints and 209 power train. On the 2008, 416 of 758 complaints name the electrical system.

Recall 05V460000 matches the transmission Wikipedia lists. On 2005-2006 cars with the 42RLE automatic, the cup plug holding the park pawl anchor shaft may be installed wrong. Dealers inspect the transmission and add a bracket. The 256,409 count covers pickups and SUVs in the same campaign.

The air bag recalls are the serious ones. Recall 15V313000 (driver inflator, 2005-2010) and 16V352000 (passenger inflator, 2005-2012) both say "do not drive" until the repair is done. Their counts, 4,077,169 and 4,648,270, cover Ram trucks, Durangos and other models too. Recall 14V770000 replaces the passenger inflator on 2005 cars. On the 2008, recall 14V567000 replaces the ignition switch and key fobs; Magnums and Chargers share that campaign.

2011-2023: alternators and rollaway software

For most 300 model years, electrical complaints come out on top. The 2012 has 441 complaints, 175 of them electrical, and 36 that report a fire. Two recalls deal with the alternator on 2011-2014 cars: 14V634000 replaces it, and 17V435000 inspects it and replaces it if needed. Both campaigns include Chargers, Challengers and Durangos.

Recall 16V240000 updates the software on 2012-2014 cars to cut the risk of rolling away. Its 811,290 count includes Chargers and Jeep Grand Cherokees. Recall 19V018000, another do-not-drive passenger inflator campaign, reaches 2010-2015 cars.

The last big campaign came in March 2024. Recall 24V198000 says the side curtain air bag inflators on 2018-2021 cars may rupture. Wikipedia notes pieces could be sent into the cabin. The 284,982 count covers Dodge Chargers too.

1999-2004

These years total 873 complaints. Structure leads the 1999 (45), steering the 2000 (50) and 2001 (25). On the 1999, recall 04V021000 says the floor shifter's park interlock may fail, so the shifter can come out of Park with no key in. That campaign's 2,315,768 vehicles span many models.

Repair, or sell as it sits?

  1. First, put your 300's VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup. If an inflator recall is open, the repair is free at a dealer, but the car shouldn't be driven there.
  2. Car slips out of Park, or the shifter won't stay put? Get the 05V460000 or 16V240000 work checked. Then read bad transmission.
  3. Battery light or dead battery on a 2011-2014? Ask about the alternator recalls before paying for parts. Our electrical problems guide covers the rest.
  4. Bags already deployed? See airbags deployed.

When the quote comes close to what the 300 would bring running, selling it whole is usually the better call.

NHTSA counts for every model year

NHTSA file as of October 10, 2026. Many 300 campaigns cover a run of model years, so the last column totals well over 46.

Selling a 300 that won't drive

  1. Send the VIN, miles and the problem. Mention if it has a V6 or a V8, if it's all-wheel drive, and if it can roll.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Give us the car's location. With an open do-not-drive recall, don't move it. We send the truck to it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it complete, wheels and catalytic converters included. Missing parts change the offer, so mention them.
  5. At pickup, hand over the title and every key fob. No title? See selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Which Chrysler 300 years have the most NHTSA complaints?
As of October 10, 2026, the 2006 tops the 300 list at 1,750. The 2005 (1,125), 2008 (758) and 2007 (623) follow. These are reports from owners, not a reliability rating. A 300 built in 2016-2023 is younger too, which leaves owners fewer years to report problems.
My 300 has a do-not-drive air bag recall. How do I sell it?
Don't drive it to a buyer. A few 300 recalls for air bag inflators say to park the car until it's repaired. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and the truck loads the car where it's parked. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Why did Chrysler stop making the 300?
Wikipedia says Stellantis confirmed in 2022 that the 300 would end after the 2023 model year, citing poor sales and a shift toward electric vehicles. The last car, a Velvet Red 300C, was built on December 8, 2023.
Do I need to pull the wheels or the engine before selling?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits. List anything already removed, wheels included, in your offer request.
