Selling a junk or non-running Chrysler LHS

Most of the LHS's NHTSA file sits on one year. Owners filed 270 complaints on the 1999-2001 cars, 165 of them on the 1999, and the component named most that year is the speed control (23).

Two generations, one in this data

Wikipedia describes the LHS as a full-size luxury four-door sedan on Chrysler's LH platform, with a longitudinal front engine driving the front wheels. It came in two generations:

  • First generation (1994-1997): built by Chrysler Corporation in Brampton, Ontario, with a 3.5-liter V6 and a 4-speed 42LE automatic. Transmission improvements were the main change for 1997. Wikipedia gives production of 44,739 for 1994 and 29,418 for 1995, and quotes Jeremy Clarkson calling it "by global standards, right up there with the best." The platinum car in the photo is a 1995.
  • Second generation (1999-2001): built by DaimlerChrysler, related to the Concorde, 300M and Dodge Intrepid. Chrysler dropped the LHS after 2001, and the design carried on as the Concorde Limited.

The EPA data on this site, and every count below, covers the 1999-2001 cars.

Steering, speed control and structure

Each LHS number here reflects what owners had reported to NHTSA by October 10, 2026. Across all three years, steering is named most (38), then structure (37), air bags (25) and speed control (23).

The 1999 carries the weight: 165 complaints, 29 reporting a crash and 39 people injured. Speed control (23) and steering (21) lead, and all 23 speed control complaints in the whole file are on that year. The 2000 drops to 83, with steering (17) and structure (15) on top and 5 naming the tires. The 2001 has 22, led by air bags (8).

None of the LHS recalls involves the steering or speed control, so a car with those complaints won't have a campaign to fall back on.

Recall campaigns: belts, seats and the B-pillar

All seven LHS campaigns covered other models too, so the vehicle counts are whole-campaign totals.

  • 03V035 (1999-2001): seat back recliner bolts can break and let the seat back drop. Dealers replace the bolts. 1,066,000 vehicles.
  • 01V273 (2000-2001): non-sunroof cars don't meet the federal standard for interior impact protection. Owners were sent a storage bin accessory that attaches to the B-pillar.
  • 00V034 (1999-2000): the shoulder belt height adjuster's top bolt was made badly. Dealers replace the bolts.
  • 00V033 (2000) and 01V119 (1999): front seat belt retractor campaigns.
  • 00V366 (2000-2001): an owner's manual addendum on child seat anchors.
  • 04V021 (1999): the shifter can be moved out of Park with no key in the ignition, because the interlock doesn't hold. 2,315,768 vehicles.

Keep it or sell it?

An LHS is now 25 years old or more, so most repair decisions come down to one written quote against what the car brings running.

Selling it whole

  1. Write down your LHS's VIN and mileage, explain what broke, and tell us if the wheels turn.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it's parked, so the truck that meets it knows what it's loading.
  4. Keep every part on it; tell us up front about anything already taken off.
  5. Bring the title and keys. Selling a late relative's LHS? See inherited car.

Questions people ask

Which LHS model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
Of 270 complaints on 1999-2001 LHS sedans as of October 10, 2026, the 1999 holds 165. Speed control (23), steering (21) and structure (16) come up most. It also has 29 complaints reporting a crash and 39 people injured. The 2001s, the last built, had the shortest stretch on the road before the count.
Was there a recall for the LHS seat back?
Yes. Campaign 03V035 covers 1999-2001 cars whose seat back recliner bolts can break and let the seat back recline without warning; dealers replace the bolts. The 1,066,000 vehicles in it include other Chrysler models.
Will you buy an LHS that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
