Five generations, five sets of issues
Generation years come from Wikipedia; complaint counts are added up from NHTSA's yearly totals.
SR I, 1992-1995. Built at New Mack Assembly. 10 complaints. Structure is named in 4 of the 5 on the 1994.
SR II, 1996-2002. Built at Conner Avenue. 24 complaints. Two recalls were for cars used hard on the track: cracked steering rack brackets on 1996-2000 cars (01V313000, 7,050 vehicles) and cracked rear differential bracket welds on 1996-1999 cars (01V312000, 4,645). Wikipedia adds that dealer bulletins 998 and 999 fixed 1996-1999 frames with riveted gussets near the steering box. Hagerty named the 1996-2002 GTS a 2020 Bull Market pick.
ZB I, 2003-2006. The SRT-10. 32 complaints, the most of any generation, and air bags lead on 2003-2005. Three recalls cover the air bag control system: 13V040000 (2003-2004), 15V046000 (2003-2004, a 752,644-vehicle campaign that is mostly Jeeps) and 19V885000, where the restraint module on 2005-2006 cars may set off the air bags or belt pretensioners on its own. There was no 2007 model year.
ZB II, 2008-2010. The 8.4-liter V10 raised output to 600 hp. 3 complaints.
VX I, 2013-2017. 11 complaints. Recall 15V178000 covers moisture in the door switch that can open a door on 2013-2014 cars. Two 2016 recalls covered 14 and 2 cars. Wikipedia says the Viper ended in 2017, and some sources tie that to the FMVSS 226 side-curtain air bag rule.
Complaints and recalls by year
The complaint numbers are owner reports on record at NHTSA as of October 10, 2026. Recall counts are campaigns listing that year. Some campaigns, like 15V461000 (a radio software fix for 1,416,903 vehicles), cover many other FCA models.

Fix, or sell as is?
Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first. On a 2005-2006 car, ask a dealer whether the restraint module recall was done.
After a crash, the questions are the frame and the air bags. Wrecked or totaled and airbags deployed cover both. For a car that sat unfinished, see old project car.

- Will you buy a Viper that's been crashed?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, a wrecked Viper included, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say whether the air bags deployed and whether it rolls.
