Selling a dead or worn-out GMC Savana

Since 2006, no Savana model year has drawn more than 13 complaints to NHTSA. The recall list tells a different story: 67 campaigns, with 11 on the 2003 alone.

A Savana with a dead engine, a worn-out transmission or half a million work miles can still be sold in one piece. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. You sell the whole car as it sits.

The Savana, briefly

Wikipedia says GMC has sold the Savana since 1996 as its version of the Chevrolet Express, folding the old Vandura cargo van and Rally passenger van into one name. It comes as a passenger van, a cargo van and a cutaway chassis. Vans are built at Wentzville Assembly in Missouri, and cutaways were also built by Navistar in Springfield, Ohio, from 2017. The van is still made.

These Savana tallies come from NHTSA's owner reports as they stood on October 10, 2026. Recall numbers cover each full campaign; most take in the Express, and many reach GM pickups and SUVs too.

Problems by generation

1996-2002: the original van (GMT600), 270 complaints

Wikipedia lists a wide engine range for these years: a 4.3 V6, 5.0 and 5.7 V8s, a 7.4 V8 through 2000, an 8.1 V8 for 2001-2002, and a 6.5-liter Detroit Diesel V8. This generation has more complaints than all the years since combined. Hydraulic brakes lead the 1997 through 2000, peaking at 20 of 56 on the 2000. Tires come up 7 times on both the 1999 and 2000.

Two campaigns from these years matter on an old van:

  • 00V110 (1996-1997 passenger vans): fuel odors or leaks, fixed with a revised evaporative emission pipe. 109,239 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 05V005 (2000): a hydraulic pump driveshaft that could break and take out power steering assist at once. 98,221 pickups, vans and SUVs in the campaign.

NHTSA's file also has 2 complaints filed under a 1995 Savana.

2003 on: the facelift (GMT610), 168 complaints

Wikipedia says the Express and Savana got a mid-cycle revision for 2003. Engines since then include a 4.3 V6, 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 V8s (several flex-fuel), the 6.6 Duramax diesel from 2006 to 2016, a 2.8 Duramax four-cylinder diesel from 2017 to 2022, a newer 4.3 V6 from 2018, and a 6.6 gas V8 from 2021.

Complaints thin out fast after 2005, but recalls keep coming. The early facelift years have the biggest ones:

  • Hydro-boost brakes. Recall 04V045 replaced a relief valve on 2003-2004 vans; recall 05V043 tested 2004-2005 vans whose brake booster accumulator could crack and separate.
  • Seat belt buckles. Recall 05V558 covered 2003-2006 full-size vans whose buckles might not latch, or might not unlatch. The campaign lists 425,593.
  • Steering. Recall 05V455 checked 2006 vans for a power steering hose built off spec.

Later campaigns are spread thin. Recall 14V117 modified the passenger instrument panel on 2009-2014 Express and Savana vans (303,013 in the campaign). Recall 18V295 replaced driver window switches on 2014-2017 vans, where liquid could get in and corrode the switch. Recall 21V189, on 2021 vans with the 6.6 gas engine, told owners to park outside until a battery cable was fixed. Recall 24V839 updated transmission software on 2022-2023 vans for harsh shifting and reduced power. Cutaway owners should check 23V247, which seals rear HVAC wiring on 2003-2023 cutaways.

No complaints are listed for 2020 or for 2023 through 2026. The latest of those vans are still quite new.

Because most campaigns reach across several model years, the recall figures overlap well past 67. This page describes only some of the 67.

Repair it or sell it?

A Savana's value as a work van depends on whether it runs and stops, and on the body behind the cab.

  1. Check open recalls at NHTSA. On a 2022-2023 with harsh shifting, ask a dealer about recall 24V839 first.
  2. Savana with a dead transmission or engine? Read bad transmission or blown engine, then compare a written shop quote with what a working van of that year and body sells for.
  3. Big miles and lots of small problems? Old or high mileage covers when to stop putting money in.

Selling a Savana whole

  1. Write down the VIN, mileage, cargo, passenger or cutaway, gas or diesel, and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it's parked, in a yard, a lot or at a job site, and whether it rolls. Free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave shelving, seats and parts in it, or say what's been taken out.
  5. Keep the title and ID ready for the driver. Selling several vans? See several junk cars.

Other GMC vans: the Safari, Vandura and Rally.

Questions people ask

Which Savana year has the most complaints?
The 2000. By October 10, 2026, this Savana year had 56 owner complaints at NHTSA, with 20 blaming the hydraulic brakes. The 1999 has 52 and the 1997 has 49. From 2006 on, no year passes 13, though the latest vans have been out only briefly.
Why so many recalls on a van with so few complaints?
Most Savana campaigns are shared. The Chevrolet Express is the same van, and many campaigns also include GM pickups and SUVs. The vehicle count on each recall is the whole campaign, not Savanas alone.
Do you buy cutaway Savanas with a box or bus body?
Tell us what's on the chassis when you ask for an offer. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US, and the body type decides which truck comes.
I have three old work vans. How do I sell them?
List each VIN when you ask for an offer. Our several junk cars guide at /selling-several-cars/ covers selling more than one.
