Selling a worn-out GMC Vandura van

Brakes dominate the GMC Vandura's record at NHTSA. Owners filed 148 complaints on the van, and 53 of them name the hydraulic service brakes. The next component on the list, tires, has 12.

What these numbers cover

EPA's fuel-economy file lists the Vandura for the 1984 to 1995 model years, as G15/25 and G35 vans, cargo versions included. NHTSA's complaint file also holds complaints filed under the 1996 model year, and this page counts them.

We counted complaints on October 10, 2026. Each one is an owner's own report to NHTSA, never a tally of broken vans or a reliability score. The 1995 and 1996 vans also reached owners last, so they've had the fewest seasons for reports to build up.

Recall vehicle counts below are for the whole campaign. Many of these campaigns may cover other GM trucks and vans too, so a big number is not the number of Vanduras.

Problems by era

We gathered no generation dates for the Vandura, so these eras follow the shape of NHTSA's file instead.

1984-1988: few complaints, early recalls

These model years hold just 10 complaints, and none are on file for the 1985. Engine and engine cooling comes up most often, and four of the complaints report a fire.

The recalls say more:

  • 84V066 (1984): some vans were ordered without the heavy-duty brakes they need when fully loaded, and did not meet the federal hydraulic brake standard. The fix added a heavy-duty brake system, power booster included. 92 vehicles.
  • 84V133 (1984): a fuel cap that may not seal the end of the filler pipe. 11,305 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 86V131 (1986): a push-pull headlight switch whose contacts can make the headlights flicker or suddenly go out. The same campaign is listed for the GMC S-15, so its 106,111 vehicles are not Vanduras alone.
  • 88V016 (1987): small holes at the spot welds on the lower fuel filler pipe.
  • 91V217 (1985-1986): a crack can start at the rear flange of the left lower control arm and spread toward the ball joint mount, until that joint separates. The fix was a reinforcing brace. 166,624 vehicles in the campaign.

1989-1992: seats, suspension and a brake pedal

These four years add 27 complaints. The 1989 has 7, including 3 that report a fire and 1 that reports a death. Tires lead the 1991's six.

  • 91V040 (1989-1991): the back of the rear bench seat can break away from the cushion in a crash. 25,807 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 92V127 (1992): a brake pedal pushrod pin that is too small and sits in the wrong position, raising the pedal ratio and shortening master cylinder stroke. 246 vehicles.
  • 94V125 (1992-1993): the lower control arm can crack near the ball joint pad. 3,492 vehicles.

1993-1996: the brake years

111 of the 148 complaints sit here, and 48 of the 53 brake complaints are on the 1993, 1994 and 1995 vans. The 1995 alone has 49 complaints, 21 of them about brakes, with 10 crashes and 17 people injured reported. Seat belts come up on the 1993 and 1994, and air bags on the 1994 and 1995.

  • 94V128 (1993-1994): the transformer that powers a neon center light can overheat and catch fire. The fix swapped in incandescent lights. 6,088 vehicles.
  • 95V026 (1995): a thin transmission case casting can leak. Dealers looked at the casting, and vans with an affected case got a replacement transmission. Its 13,853 vehicles also include the GMC Rally.
  • 96V117 (1995-1996): tires with bead damage from mounting.
  • 96V186 (1996): water getting into the kick panels can corrode a path between the battery feed and ground. Dealers swapped 25-amp circuit breakers for fuses.
  • 96V187 (1996): a steering relay rod nut that was not torqued to spec.

The 1985 has no complaints on file. Campaigns covering two or more years are counted in every year they cover, which is why that column totals 22 rather than 17.

Fix it or sell it?

On a van this old, set the repair quote beside what the Vandura would fetch once fixed. When the first number crowds the second, let it go as is.

  1. Brakes soft, pulling or grabbing? That's the complaint owners filed most. The bad brakes guide covers the signs.
  2. Automatic leaking on a 1995? Recall 95V026 is listed on NHTSA's recall pages. See bad transmission before paying for a rebuild.
  3. Clunks from the front end? Two recalls covered cracking lower control arms. The broken suspension guide explains what to look for.
  4. Parked for years? Sitting for years explains what a long-parked van usually needs.

Selling your Vandura whole

  1. Note the VIN off the dash or door, the mileage, the van's faults and whether it can be pushed.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot it sits in, whether that's a side yard, a shop lot, a driveway or behind a building. Flat tires matter for loading, so mention them. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave the van whole. Take out your own tools and gear, but leave the parts on. Tell us about anything already pulled.
  5. Paperwork for the Vandura: the title, signed over, plus your ID for the driver to see. No title? Start with the no-title guide. For plates and insurance, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Vandura model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1995, with 49 of the van's 148 complaints as of October 10, 2026. The 1993 and 1994 follow with 28 each. Each is a report an owner sent NHTSA, not a tally of vans that broke, and a younger model year has simply had fewer years for reports to pile up.
What do Vandura owners complain about most?
The hydraulic service brakes, named in 53 complaints. 48 of those are on the 1993, 1994 and 1995 vans. Tires (12), seat belts (11), engine and engine cooling (11), power train (8) and air bags (8) come next.
Was there a recall for the Vandura's transmission?
Yes, on the 1995. Recall 95V026 says a thin case casting could let the automatic transmission leak. Dealers checked which casting each van had, and an affected one got a new transmission. The campaign's 13,853 vehicles also include the GMC Rally, so that number is not Vanduras alone.
Do I need to clear out my cargo Vandura before pickup?
Take out your own tools and belongings, and leave the van's parts on. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so you sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
