Selling an old GMC Suburban that's done
Brakes. Owners have sent NHTSA 1,799 complaints about the GMC Suburban, and 838 of them name the hydraulic service brakes. That's nearly half. The 1994 alone drew 411 complaints, and 263 of those were about brakes.

A Suburban with a soft pedal, a slipping transmission or a body you've stopped trusting can go as is, with no repair first. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you can sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
Which Suburbans this page covers
Wikipedia dates the GMC Suburban name from 1937 to 1999 and calls it a full-size SUV from 1960 on. It lists the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon and the Silverado/Sierra as related models. The EPA's fuel economy data holds GMC Suburbans from 1984 to 1999, in 2WD and 4WD versions sold under names like C15, K15, R15 and V15 Suburban. NHTSA's complaint file also has 15 complaints filed under a 2000 model year.
Every complaint figure on this page is an owner's report to NHTSA, tallied through October 10, 2026. A report is not a rating.
Known problems, generation by generation
1984-1986: the last of the 1973 design
Wikipedia puts the start of the seventh generation in 1973. These three years have only 12 complaints between them and no recall campaigns. There isn't a pattern to report.
1987-1991: the R/V years
Wikipedia lists the R/V series from 1987 to 1991. These years hold 85 complaints, and the most-named items are seats and seat belts, not brakes.
The recalls match. Recall 89V010 covered 1988 Suburbans whose driver belt locking mechanism might not work. Recall 93V187 (1989-1990) and recall 96V226 (1991) dealt with foam or vinyl trapped between the seat recliner and the seat frame, which can let the bolts loosen. Recall 93V016 covered 1988-1992 trucks where heat could push transmission fluid out of the vent tube; dealers fitted a longer vent hose. That campaign lists 1,702,880 vehicles, a count that may include other GM models.
1992-1999: the eighth generation, and the brake years
Wikipedia dates the eighth generation to 1992. This is where nearly all the complaints are: 1,687 of 1,799. Brakes lead every one of these eight years, adding up to 815 complaints. The peak runs from 1993 (158 brake complaints) to 1994 (263).
The brake recalls are smaller than the complaint pile. Recall 92V056 covered 1992 trucks whose brake pedal pivot bolt might not be tight. Recall 99V025 covered 1994 trucks built with the brake switch wiring reversed; that campaign lists 988,587 pickups, crew cabs, utility trucks and SUVs, not only Suburbans. Recall 98V033 replaced front rotors on 1998 trucks built with out-of-spec gray iron.
Visibility is the second theme, with 68 complaints on the 1994. It falls under two wiper recalls, 98V150 (1994-1996) and 03V159 (1994-1997). In both, solder joints crack and the wipers stop or only work some of the time. Those campaigns list 1,557,585 and 1,755,876 vehicles, spread across GM pickups and SUVs.
The 1995 had six campaigns. Two touched the automatic transmission: 95V026 for a thin case casting that could leak (dealers replaced affected transmissions) and 95V139 for a shift cable clip that could back out. Recall 96V057 (1995-1996) checked for a throttle cable that could bind against the dash mat. On the 1997, steering shows up with 37 complaints; none of the recalls listed for these years is a steering campaign.
The 2000 entries
NHTSA lists 15 complaints and two campaigns under a 2000 Suburban: 00V222, a brake booster vacuum hose reroute, and 03V094, for conversions with Southern Comfort running boards.
Complaints and recalls, year by year
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes reported | Recall campaigns | Named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984-1987 | 20 | 3 | 0 | No clear leader |
| 1988 | 8 | 0 | 2 | Seat belts (2) |
| 1989 | 17 | 2 | 2 | Seats (4) |
| 1990 | 22 | 3 | 2 | Seats (7) |
| 1991 | 30 | 2 | 2 | Seats (11) |
| 1992 | 80 | 21 | 2 | Brakes (65) |
| 1993 | 212 | 31 | 0 | Brakes (158) |
| 1994 | 411 | 66 | 3 | Brakes (263) |
| 1995 | 227 | 18 | 6 | Brakes (95) |
| 1996 | 172 | 12 | 3 | Brakes (59) |
| 1997 | 200 | 15 | 2 | Brakes (47) |
| 1998 | 100 | 9 | 2 | Brakes (23) |
| 1999 | 285 | 25 | 1 | Brakes (105) |
| 2000 | 15 | 1 | 2 | Brakes (3) |
Because a single campaign often reaches across model years, those recall figures overlap and total more than 17. The complaints count ten deaths in all: two on the 1988, three on the 1995, four on the 1996 and one on the 1998.
Worth fixing, or time to sell?
A Suburban from these years is a big, heavy truck, and its value depends on whether it moves under its own power. Compare the shop's written quote with what a working Suburban of your year and drivetrain sells for. When the repair quote comes near that, selling it as is tends to be simpler.

How to sell the Suburban whole
- Gather the basics: VIN, mileage, 2WD or 4WD, and what's wrong.
- Get an offer online or by calling (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it is (driveway, field, back lot) and if it can roll and be steered. A full-size SUV with flat tires or locked brakes needs the right truck, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave everything bolted on. Mention any part that's already off.
- Our driver collects the Suburban's title and checks your ID. Can't find the title? Read selling with no title first. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which GMC Suburban year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1994: owners had lodged 411 complaints about it by October 10, 2026. Behind it are the 1999 (285), the 1995 (227) and the 1993 (212). On the 1994, 263 of the 411 name the hydraulic service brakes.
- Were all 1,702,880 vehicles in the vent recall Suburbans?
- No. Recall 93V016 lists 1,702,880 vehicles, but that is the whole campaign, and it may include other GM models. It covers 1988-1992 Suburbans, where heat could push transmission fluid out of the vent tube. The fix was a longer vent hose.
- Will you take a Suburban with no brakes that can't be driven?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Say where your Suburban sits, if it rolls, and 2WD or 4WD, so the right truck comes.
- Should I pull the engine or wheels off first?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. If parts have been taken off, say so early, because that affects the offer.
