Selling a junk or broken Infiniti FX35

Air bags are the part FX35 owners complain about most. NHTSA's complaint file holds 452 complaints on the FX35, and 111 of them name the air bags. Of the model's 13 recall campaigns, six swap out the passenger-side front air bag inflator or module. The 2008 stands out: 19 of its 35 complaints are filed under air bags, and that year's complaints report 20 injuries and one death.

Two generations, two different complaint files

Wikipedia lists two FX generations. We group the model years by production dates, so the split at 2008 is ours.

GenerationBuiltEngines and gearboxModel years hereComplaints
First (S50)Nov. 2002 to Feb. 2008, Hiratsuka, Japan3.5 VQ35DE V6 (the FX45 had a 4.5 V8); 5-speed automatic2003-2008387
Second (S51)March 2008 to March 2013, Tochigi, Japan3.5 VQ35HR or 3.7 VQ37VHR V6; 7-speed automatic2009-201364

One more complaint is filed under a 2002 model year. EPA's listings carry FX37 versions next to the FX35, in rear- and all-wheel drive.

2003-2008: air bags, latches and a run of early recalls

More than four in five FX35 complaints land on first-generation cars. The 2004 leads all years at 120, and its leading topics are latches, locks and linkages (22), the electrical system (17) and structure (16). From 2005 on, air bags lead every year through 2008.

The air bag campaigns overlap and most of them cover other models too:

  • 15V287 (2003): passenger inflator. Its 1,090,569 vehicles include Maximas, Pathfinders and Sentras.
  • 15V226 (2003-2005): passenger inflator, for cars sold or registered in certain areas. 12,606 vehicles, including I35s and M-series cars.
  • 16V349 (2003-2008): passenger inflator. 413,852 vehicles, including Versas and the M35 and M45.
  • 17V028 (2005-2008) and 20V008 (2003-2008): replacement inflators. 20V008 fits desiccated inflators.
  • 21V139 (2003 and 2006-2008): cars that already got a new passenger air bag under 20V008 get the module replaced again.

The 2003 has 10 recall campaigns, the most of any FX35 year. Beyond air bags, dealers tightened front brake caliper bolts (03V476) and replaced propeller shaft bolts that may not have been tightened enough (03V164). A fuel filler hose that could crack and leak while refueling was replaced on 2003-2006 cars (05V555, 192,659 vehicles across several Nissan and Infiniti models). Two 2006 campaigns swapped the rear lamps and headlamps after a Canadian compliance test (06V244 and 06V328). The 2005 also had rear-seat child seat anchor brackets replaced (05V338).

2009-2013: a short complaint file

The second generation has 64 complaints over five model years. Engine and fuel/propulsion topics show up on the 2011-2013 lists, three complaints or fewer each. The only recall on these years in NHTSA's list is 15V054: dealers replace the steering shaft on 2009 FX35s, a campaign of 16,973 vehicles that also covers the EX35 and FX45.

Complaints and recalls by model year

These FX35 counts use NHTSA complaint records through October 10, 2026, so the later model years, sold more recently, show smaller totals. Our recall column shows every campaign touching that model year, and because most FX35 campaigns span a range of years, its total runs well past 13.

Fix it or sell it?

  1. Run the VIN first. With six passenger air bag campaigns on these years, an FX35 can have open recalls even after one was done. The remedies listed are free at a dealer.
  2. If the air bags already went off, read airbags deployed before paying for a repair.
  3. For anything else, put the shop's written estimate beside asking prices for running FX35s of your year and mileage. If the estimate eats most of that, selling it whole usually wins. An unfinished recall doesn't stop a sale; see selling with an open recall.

Selling an FX35 whole

  1. Copy the FX35's VIN from the dash or the door jamb, and note its miles and the problem. Tell us if it's rear- or all-wheel drive and if it has the 3.5 or 3.7.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where your FX35 is parked, such as a driveway, street, garage or shop, and whether all four wheels roll freely. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Don't pull anything. Wheels, catalytic converters and air bags stay where they are; flag anything that's already gone.
  5. When we collect the FX35, hand over the signed title and show ID. Plate rules vary by state; see after you sell.

Looking at the bigger engine or the later name? See the FX45 and QX70, or the QX4 the FX replaced.

Questions people ask

Which FX35 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2004 leads with 120 as of October 10, 2026, then the 2005 (94) and 2003 (61). The 2009-2013 cars have 64 complaints between them.
How do I know if my FX35 still has an open air bag recall?
Put the VIN into NHTSA's lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Six FX35 campaigns deal with the passenger-side front air bag, and NHTSA's notices list every remedy as a no-cost dealer job. Recall 21V139 even goes back to some 2003 and 2006-2008 cars fixed once under 20V008, so one finished recall doesn't mean the VIN is clear.
Will you buy an FX35 that doesn't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention whether it rolls on its own wheels and what kind of spot it's in.
