Selling a worn-out Infiniti QX4

One generation, two looks

Wikipedia lists the QX4 as a mid-size luxury SUV built from September 1996 to November 2002 by Nissan Shatai in Kanda, Fukuoka, Japan, with a facelifted version for 2001-2003. The Infiniti QX56 succeeded it. We split the complaint file at the facelift.

1997-2000: suspension and steering

The early trucks hold 145 complaints. Suspension leads on 1997 (12), 1998 (7) and 1999 (9), and steering is high on 1997 and 1999 with 7 each. The 1997 has 7 crashes, 5 injuries and the one death in the QX4's file. On the 2000, structure moves to the top with 9.

Two more recalls cover these years:

• 07V435 (1997-2001): dealers replace the fuel filler tube with one that has an improved coating, for trucks first sold in, or later registered in, the states that notice names. The 372,250 count is for the full recall, not QX4s alone.
• 00V410 (2000-2001): the ignition lock's key cylinder cap pins may not be seated, and vibration can loosen them or make them fall out. Dealers inspect and replace loose assemblies. 9,200 vehicles.

2001-2003: the facelifted trucks

The 2001 has 73 complaints, the most of any QX4 year, and its leaders are equipment (17), structure (15) and suspension (8). Recall 01V282 fits the structure count: brackets holding the two gas struts on the rear hatch may have been made wrong, and dealers replaced them. That campaign covered 31,000 vehicles.

The 2002 has 5 recall campaigns, the most of any year. Four of them are air bags:

• 10V312: 46 trucks built August 24-28, 2001, Pathfinders included, got a new front passenger air bag module.
• 17V068: 46 trucks with Takata inflators in the passenger air bag, Pathfinders included.
• 15V287 (2002-2003): passenger inflator replacement. 1,090,569 vehicles, Maximas, Pathfinders and Sentras included.
• 20V008 (2002-2003): replacement passenger inflators. 307,962 vehicles across Nissan and Infiniti.

The 2003 has 20 complaints, led by suspension (6) and structure (5).

Complaints and recalls by model year

These counts are from NHTSA's complaint records as pulled October 10, 2026. QX4 campaigns tend to cover runs of model years, so the recall column overlaps and totals more than 8.

Fix it or sell it?

Even the last QX4s are over two decades old, so the math usually comes down to the front end and the body.

1. Check the strut housing recall. If 11V244 is open on your VIN, ask a Nissan or Infiniti dealer about it first.
2. Clunks, wander or a sagging corner? Broken suspension covers what that repair involves.

Selling a QX4 whole

1. Note whether it's the 2WD or 4WD truck, plus the VIN, odometer reading and main fault.
2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
3. Describe the spot and whether the front end still lets it roll and steer. A truck that has sat for years in a yard or a driveway is fine; pickup is free anywhere in the US.
4. Leave everything on, including the wheels and catalytic converters, and say if parts are gone.
5. Have the title and ID for pickup. Plate rules are in after you sell.
