A short run, and fewer cars each year

Wikipedia says the J30 was built from 1992 to 1997 in Tochigi, Japan, with a 3.0-liter VG30DE V6, a 4-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. About 70,000 were sold in the US: more than 20,000 a year in 1993 and 1994, then 17,899 in 1995, 7,564 in 1996 and 4,594 in 1997. Production ended on June 18, 1997, and the I30 replaced it.

That sales curve matters when you read the complaint counts. The 1993-1995 cars hold 64 of the 80 complaints, and far more of them were sold.

What owners reported

1993-1995. Air bags lead each of these years: 7 complaints on the 1993, 8 on the 1994, 3 on the 1995. The 1993 also lists brakes and power train (3 each) and has 11 reported injuries, the most of any year. The 1994 has the most crashes, 7.

These are the years in the one recall campaign, 96V083. A harness connector protector next to the front seat belt pre-tensioner can catch fire from the gas the pre-tensioner releases when it fires. Dealers replace the protectors. NHTSA's 79,000 figure counts the whole 96V083 campaign, and that campaign may cover other models too, so read it as a campaign total rather than a J30 count.

1996-1997. Only 3 complaints on the 1996. The 1997, the last and lowest-selling year, has 11, with 5 crashes. Vehicle speed control and the electrical system lead it (3 each). Across all years, vehicle speed control comes up in 9 complaints.

NHTSA also lists 2 complaints under a 1992 model year, though the EPA data starts at 1993.
