Selling an old Infiniti M30
Of the 22 M30 complaints on file with NHTSA, 3 describe a fire. Gasoline fuel system parts come up in 5, more than anything else. On a car that is now more than 30 years old, a fuel smell is worth taking seriously before anyone tries to start it.

A short run
Wikipedia lists the M30 as a rear-wheel-drive coupe, built in Musashimurayama, Tokyo, from 1989 to 1992. It shared its roots with the Nissan Skyline R31. Every one has a 3.0-liter VG30E V6 and a 4-speed RE4R01A automatic. Infiniti dropped it after the 1992 model year, after roughly 17,000 cars.
The M name came back in 2002 on a series of sedans that later became the Q70. Those are different cars. Nothing in their records applies to an M30.
What owners told NHTSA
1990: 9 complaints, 2 fires. The power train and the gasoline fuel system each come up 3 times.
1991: 8 complaints, 1 fire. Half name the electrical system (4). Engine and engine cooling come up twice.
1992: 5 complaints, no fires. The fuel system leads again with 2.
None of the 22 reports a crash or an injury.
| Model year | Complaints | Fires reported | Components owners named | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1990 | 9 | 2 | Power train 3; fuel system 3; structure 1 | 1 |
| 1991 | 8 | 1 | Electrical system 4; engine and cooling 2; structure 1 | 1 |
| 1992 | 5 | 0 | Fuel system 2; visibility 1; side/rear 1 | 0 |
Our tally of NHTSA owner reports, October 10, 2026. Low counts on later cars often just mean less time for owners to write in. Every M30 has had over 30 years for that.
The one recall
Recall 95V103002 covers 1990 and 1991 cars. Its subject is the front belt buckles: the red release button may crack, and its fragments may keep the latch from working right. NHTSA's notice tells owners to look over both front buckles and their red buttons. If yours latch poorly, that is one more thing to mention when you sell.
Restore it or sell it?
An M30 that has sat for years rarely needs just one thing. Old fuel lines, wiring and seals tend to need attention together. The fuel system leads the complaint file, with power train and electrical close behind, so get those checked before you spend on anything else. If the restoration list keeps growing, see our guides on the old project car and the car sitting for years. If there are fire marks under the hood, the fire-damaged car guide applies.
Getting it picked up
- Find the VIN and the title. A car this old often has paperwork in a drawer somewhere.
- Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it's stored, the state of the tires, and, if it is a convertible, whether the top is up or down.
- Leave it as it is. Sell the whole car as it sits, with nothing pulled first.
- Our truck comes to the M30 in the driveway, yard or garage. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Questions people ask
- How many M30s were made?
- About 17,000, per Wikipedia, before Infiniti dropped it after the 1992 model year. EPA data lists it for 1990, 1991 and 1992.
- What was the M30 recall?
- Campaign 95V103002, for 1990 and 1991 cars. On each front belt buckle, the red PRESS button may crack, and broken bits can end up inside the buckle. Its 2,730,462-vehicle count is for the whole campaign, far more than the M30s ever built, so most were other vehicles.
- Will you buy an M30 that hasn't run in a decade?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. An M30 on flat tires with a dead battery can still be picked up. Just tell us about both.
