Selling a dead or worn-out Jaguar XJ

Of the 581 complaints Jaguar XJ owners have sent NHTSA for model years 1984 to 2019, 131 sit on the 1998 alone. Fifty of those 1998 complaints point at the engine and its cooling system. The 2004, next in line, has 72.

Known problems, generation by generation

A note on the numbers. These XJ numbers come from NHTSA owner-complaint records on October 10, 2026. Each is an XJ owner's own report, not proof of a fault, and a 2017 XJ has had decades less time to gather reports than a 1990. Recall vehicle totals are NHTSA's figures for each whole campaign, and several XJ campaigns also reach other Jaguars. Generation names and dates are from Wikipedia.

1984-1994: Series 3 and XJ40

Wikipedia dates the Series 3 to 1979-1992 and the XJ40 to 1986-1994. Work on the XJ40 began in the early 1970s and was held up by problems at British Leyland and by the 1973 oil crisis.

Seat belts define these XJs. For the 1989 through 1992 XJ, they lead the complaints each year. Recall 93V179000 covers the same years: on 1989-1992 cars the motor winch that drives the automatic (passive) belt can lock up, leaving the belt stuck on its track or not deploying at all. Jaguar said it would repair the system and told owners about a lifetime warranty. NHTSA counts 52,102 vehicles in that campaign.

The 1988 and 1989 XJ also carry two recalls on the hydraulic brake assist. In 90V023000, a high-pressure supply hose could burst. In 90V024000, the accumulator switch could weep fluid next to electrical wiring. Two more 1988 campaigns cover front spring pan fixings weakened by stress corrosion (88V018000) and a brake lamp microswitch fault that could keep cruise control on after the brakes were pressed (87V105000). On the 1990 XJ, a rear caliper bolt could lose its head (89V235000).

1995-1997: X300

Jaguar showed the X300 at the Paris Motor Show in October 1994, with four round headlamps meant to echo the older Series cars, Wikipedia says. Owners filed 59 complaints across these three model years, and vehicle speed control is the most-named component on all three.

1998-2003: X308

Wikipedia calls the X308's styling close to the X300's, with minor refinements. Its first year is the spike: the 1998 XJ has 131 complaints, with 50 on engine and engine cooling, 16 on speed control and 16 on the power train. The 1999 XJ adds 32, a dozen of them about the engine and cooling.

On 1998 cars, recall 98V022000 covers a throttle cable adjuster nut that can slip off its bracket on the engine. NHTSA counts 5,379 vehicles, and the campaign shows up on the 1998 XK record too, so XJs are only part of that figure. The 2000 through 2003 XJs drew 56 complaints between them, and no recall campaign lists any of those years.

2004-2008: the Castle Bromwich sedans

Wikipedia lists this generation as built from 2002 to 2009 at Castle Bromwich, in Birmingham. The 2004 XJ has 72 complaints: 18 about the suspension, 14 about speed control and 7 about the hydraulic brakes. Twelve of the 72 report a crash.

Three campaigns name the 2004 XJ. 09V144000 covers 14,551 of them: Jaguar flagged how a noise-damping (NVH) pad fitted to the under tray interacts with the rear under floor, so dealers take off the rear under tray and discard the pad. NHTSA files that one under hydraulic brakes. 04V024000 is a gearbox recall; an XJ in a forward gear could shift itself into reverse without telling the driver, and the cure is new transmission software. That campaign's 31,731 vehicles include S-Types and XKs. The third, 04V136000, is for a sharp edge on the passenger air bag trim.

On the 2006 XJ, 7 of 21 complaints concern the gasoline fuel system. Recall 06V358000 covers 2006-2007 XJs whose fuel tank seals may work loose; dealers fit a new tank. Two other campaigns hit the 2006 XJ. One is a moonroof reinforcement bar that may rub the glass (06V018000). The second is about a bad parking pawl guide plate in the XJ's automatic (05V503000). The 2006 S-Type has it too.

2011-2019: X351

The final XJ was built from 2010 to 2019 at Castle Bromwich and in Pune, India. The 2011 has 20 complaints, 5 electrical. Its recalls cover wiper arms whose spindle nuts weren't torqued (10V578000) and a restraint control module that might not accept a software update at a service visit (17V394000). On 2014-2015 XJs, brake line junctions under the floor may leak (14V741000). 17V678000, where the gauge cluster blanks out at random, takes in 2016-2017 XJs plus some XF, F-Pace and XE models, 7,036 vehicles all told.

The 2012 through 2019 XJs drew 52 complaints combined. Eight of the 26 campaigns aren't described on this page, so put your XJ's VIN into NHTSA's search to see them all.

Complaints and recalls by model year

These XJ figures date from October 10, 2026. An XJ recall naming both 1988 and 1989 shows up in each of those rows, which is why that XJ column sums past 26. No 2009 or 2010 XJ shows up in the complaint breakdown.

Fix it or sell it?

  1. Free fixes first. Paste the XJ's VIN into NHTSA's recall search and ask a Jaguar dealer about any campaign still open on it, such as the passive belt work on a 1989-1992 or the gearbox software on a 2004.
  2. A 1998 or 1999 XJ with engine trouble fits the pattern in the data. Read blown engine and head gasket or overheating before approving a teardown.
  3. Get the shop's price on paper. Then check asking prices for running XJs of your year and mileage. When the bill and the running-car price land near each other, our guide on when the fix outweighs the car helps you choose.
  4. An XJ parked for years brings its own list of dried seals and dead batteries; see car sitting for years.

How to sell your XJ whole

  1. Jot down the XJ's VIN, odometer reading and symptoms, and whether it will roll. The EPA files the XJ under names from XJ6 and XJ12 to XJR, XJL, Vanden Plas and Super V8, so read us the trunk badge too.
  2. Request a price online or ring (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the XJ's spot: driveway, garage, curb, or the back of a shop. If a long-wheelbase XJL is wedged into a tight garage, mention it so the tow driver knows before arriving. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep the XJ in one piece. Already sold the wheels or pulled the battery? Put it on the list; missing pieces lower the number.
  5. On pickup day, hand the driver the signed XJ title, your photo ID and any XJ keys you still have. Whether your plates leave with the car is a state rule; after you sell sorts it out.

Title missing? Read selling with no title first. Other Jaguars: the S-Type, XF, XK, or every Jaguar we cover.

Questions people ask

Which Jaguar XJ model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1998 XJ: 131 complaints in NHTSA's file as we tallied it on October 10, 2026, and 50 concern the engine and its cooling. Behind it sit the 2004 (72) and the 1999 (32). An XJ built after 1998 hasn't been around as long, so owners have filed for fewer years.
Was there a recall on the XJ's motorized seat belts?
Yes. Campaign 93V179000 covers 1989-1992 XJs. The passive belt's motor winch can jam, so the belt stalls partway along its track or never deploys. Jaguar said it would repair the system and told owners of a lifetime warranty on it. NHTSA's VIN search shows whether your XJ is on the list.
Will you buy an XJ that doesn't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and an XJ gets free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention whether it rolls and where it's sitting.
Should I pull parts off my XJ before selling?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits. An XJ that's already short a few pieces can still be sold; list what's gone, since that moves the number.
