Selling a junk or non-running Jaguar XF

Four recall campaigns on the 2010 Jaguar XF involve fuel: a kinked transfer pipe inside the tank, a fuel pump relay, and two different cracked fuel outlet flanges. The 2010 also tops every XF year for complaints in NHTSA's file, 106, and 41 of them concern the fuel and propulsion system.

Problems by period, tied to the recalls

The XF runs in EPA data from 2009 to 2024, as a midsize sedan and as the Sportbrake wagon, with gasoline, flex-fuel and diesel versions. We have no generation dates for it, so the model years below are grouped by what the data shows.

Each count is a complaint an XF owner lodged with NHTSA, as we tallied the agency's file on October 10, 2026. No XF report here is a proven failure, and the totals are no grade; a 2022 XF just hasn't had as many years for owners to complain as a 2010. Vehicle numbers after each recall are NHTSA's totals for the full campaign, and where a campaign names other Jaguars too, we say so.

2009-2011: fuel and air bags

These three XF years hold 276 of its 394 complaints.

Fuel. On the 2010, recall 09V424000 covers a transfer pipe inside the tank that may be kinked and can starve the pump of fuel. 10V332000 covers 2010 XFs with the 5.0-liter V8 plus 2010-2011 XKs: the in-tank pump may fail to switch on because its relay isn't energized, and dealers load revised software. Its 5,048 vehicles span both models. The tank's fuel outlet flange can crack on 2010-2012 XFs with the 5.0 (12V521000, 4,195 vehicles) and leak on 2010 XFs with the 4.2 (20V081000, 2,907 vehicles).

Air bags. Air bags head the complaint list on the 2009 XF (20) and the 2011 (23), and come to 71 complaints overall. Four campaigns replace the front passenger air bag on XFs first sold in, or ever registered in, particular states; Florida, Texas, California, Hawaii and Louisiana are among those named:

Other early recalls. On the 2009 XF, the outboard rear seat belt D-ring may bind on its anchor bolt (08V396000, 7,918 XFs), and wires to the gauge cluster's speaker can fracture (08V607000, 3,754 XFs). On the 2010, the power steering pipes got zinc-nickel plating short of the corrosion spec (11V168000, 4,926 vehicles, XK and XF).

2012-2015: engine complaints and the 2.0-liter GTDi recalls

The engine climbs to the top of the XF complaint list on the 2012 (12) and the 2013 (7). The 2013 also has 12 recall campaigns listed, more than any other XF year, and four of them cover XFs with the 2.0-liter GTDi engine:

  • 13V341000 and 14V181000: the clamp on the charge air cooler hose may sit out of place on 2013-2014 XFs. Dealers reposition and tighten it.
  • 16V137000: a retaining bolt in the front end accessory drive on 2013-2015 XFs. Dealers fit a new pulley assembly (6,938 vehicles).
  • 16V796000: fuel lines on 2013-2015 XFs may chafe. Dealers inspect, replace and add clips (5,081 vehicles).

2016-2024: few complaints

XF owners filed 16 complaints across all of these model years combined. The recalls here are shared with other Jaguars. 17V678000, a gauge cluster that can black out now and then, covers 2017-2018 XFs along with some F-Pace, XJ and XE models (7,036 vehicles). 18V090000 covers leaking fuel rail end caps on 2018 2.0-liter gasoline cars across five Jaguar models (10,073). 21V667000 covers child-seat locking retractors in the belts that can switch off too soon on the 2021 XF, F-Type and F-Pace (5,146).

The XF has 32 campaigns in all, and 14 aren't described here. NHTSA's VIN search lists every one that applies to your car.

Fix, or sell as it sits?

  1. Clear the recalls. A passenger air bag or fuel campaign is repaired at a Jaguar dealer free of charge, per the notices above. If you'd rather not wait for the appointment, see selling with an open recall.
  2. A 2013-2015 XF with the 2.0-liter GTDi engine? Four campaigns above cover that engine, from the charge air cooler hose clamp to the fuel lines. Have the VIN checked before you pay for engine work.
  3. Fuel smell or a no-start on a 2010 XF? That's the year with four fuel campaigns. Have the VIN checked before you pay for a diagnosis.
  4. Got a steep estimate? Compare it with the price of a running XF from your year. When the numbers sit close, read our guide to a repair that outweighs the car.

Complaints and recalls by model year

XF numbers from NHTSA's records on October 10, 2026. XF years with no complaints on file (2019-2021) are left out. A campaign covering several XF years counts in each of them.

Selling your XF whole

  1. Pull together the XF's details: VIN, odometer reading, dash warnings or symptoms, and whether it can be pushed. Tell us if it's a Sportbrake, a diesel or a supercharged car.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Name the XF's location: a parking garage level, a condo lot, a driveway, a dealer's service lot. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep the XF complete. Wheels and converter stay on. Anything already removed goes on the list.
  5. Hand-off: the XF's title, your ID and every key fob. Each state has its own plate rule; after you sell spells them out.

Still paying on it? Read still owe on the loan. Comparing Jaguars? See the S-Type, XE, F-Pace or every Jaguar we cover.

Questions people ask

Which Jaguar XF year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2010 XF, which NHTSA's records showed at 106 on October 10, 2026, with 41 about the fuel and propulsion system. The 2009 has 90 and the 2011 has 80. A late-model XF hasn't been around long, so its owners have had a shorter window to report.
Was my XF's passenger air bag recalled?
Possibly. Four campaigns swap the front passenger air bag on 2009-2015 XFs first sold in, or ever registered in, particular states; Florida, Texas, California and Hawaii are among those named. Run the XF's VIN through NHTSA's recall search to know for sure.
Will you buy an XF that still has an open recall, or one whose engine quit?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and an XF in either state gets free pickup anywhere in the US. Say which recall is open and what the engine is doing.
Should the XF be stripped before pickup?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits. If the XF is already missing wheels, a battery or trim, list it so the offer reflects it.
