Selling a junk or broken Lexus GX

Three generations of GX

Every GX has been built at Toyota's Tahara plant in Japan, alongside the Land Cruiser Prado and the 4Runner, according to Wikipedia. Every number below is an owner-submitted report in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 data; none has been confirmed.

2003-2009: the GX 470 (J120)

Wikipedia lists a 4.7-liter 2UZ-FE V8 with a 5-speed automatic, on a platform related to the 4Runner of the time. These years hold 263 complaints. On the 2003, the power train leads (12). On the 2004 through 2006, air bags and structure trade the top spot: 20 and 20 on the 2004, 10 and 7 on the 2005, 9 and 9 on the 2006.

Recall 16V065 replaced the side air bag control module with better programming on 2004-2006 GX 470s. Its 320,409-vehicle count also covers the Land Cruiser, LX 470, Tundra, Sequoia and 4Runner. On the 2003, recall 03V088 dealt with a second-row seat latch that could be hard to lock on GXs with the Lexus Link system.

2010-2023: the GX 460 (J150)

A 4.6-liter 1UR-FE V8 and a 6-speed automatic, per Wikipedia, built from November 2009 to November 2023. These 14 model years hold 191 complaints.

Air bags lead the 2010 (11 of 38), 2011 (23 of 37) and 2012 (9 of 11). Passenger-side inflator work on these GX 460 years runs through 16V340 (2010-2011) plus 19V005 and 19V741 (2010-2017). Those campaigns reached 4Runners, Corollas and other models, so their vehicle totals describe the whole campaign.

Recall 10V159 reprogrammed the stability control on 9,400 2010 GX 460s built from November 16, 2009 through April 8, 2010, because the SUV could slide sideways in a sharp turn at high speed. The 2018-2019 GX is part of fuel pump recall 20V682.

2024 on: the GX 550 (J250)

Wikipedia lists the V35A-FTS, a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6, driving through a ten-speed Direct Shift automatic. The J250 GX sits at 34 complaints. Building started only in November 2023, so owners haven't had long to report. The 2024's top components are the engine and the electrical system, 5 each.

Recall 25V767 is the one to know if a 2024 has engine trouble. It covers some 2024 GX models with the V35A engine, where debris from manufacturing may contaminate the engine. Dealers inspect the number 1 main bearing using inspection software and drive data, and replace the engine if necessary. That campaign of 126,691 vehicles also includes the Tundra and LX. Recall 26V341 updates instrument cluster software over the air on the 2024.

GX complaints and recalls by model year

Slow years are bundled. Because a campaign is logged under every GX year it touches, the recall column overlaps from row to row.

Fix the GX, or sell it?

• Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. An open inflator or engine recall changes what you should do next.

1. Have ready the VIN, mileage, which GX it is (470, 460 or 550) and what's wrong.
2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.

4. Leave it as it is, wheels, battery and converters included. Say if anything is missing.
