Selling a broken or junk Lexus RX
Of the 616 Lexus RX complaints in NHTSA's file that point at the power train, 441 come from three model years: 1999, 2000 and 2001. Those are first-generation RX 300s. The single busiest year is the 2004, though, with 327 complaints, the first year of the second generation.

An RX 300 with a worn-out power train and a 2021 RX 350 with a smashed front end get the same answer from us: sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
Where RX complaints cluster, generation by generation
The RX numbers on this page all come from complaints owners gave NHTSA through October 10, 2026. Drivers sent them in; nobody tested anything. A 2025 RX has spent far fewer months on the road than a 2004, so its small tally partly reflects age.
1999-2003: the first RX (XU10)
Wikipedia lists the first RX as built from January 1998 to January 2003 and sold as model years 1999 to 2003, with a 4-speed U140E/F automatic. NHTSA holds 818 complaints on those five years. Four of them list the power train first: 152 of 256 complaints on the 1999, 157 of 245 on the 2000 and 132 of 188 on the 2001.
The complaint file also lists 3 complaints under a 1998 RX, a year the EPA data does not include.
2004-2009: the second generation (XU30)
This is the busiest stretch, with 1,448 complaints over six years. The 2004 leads with 327, and its top components are the power train (64) and the hydraulic service brakes (57). Recall 10V499 replaced a brake master cylinder seal on 2004-2006 RX models, because the brake fluid used contained polymers that act on the seal. That campaign counted 728,544 vehicles, and it also covered the Avalon, Highlander, GS and IS, so the number is not the RX's alone.
Two recalls deal with the driver's floor carpet cover near the accelerator: 06V253 on 2004-2006 models and 11V112 on 2004-2007 models. Recall 11V539 had dealers check the crankshaft pulley on 2004-2005 RX 330s and 2006 RX 400h models.
The RX 400h was the first hybrid RX, and Wikipedia lists a power-split hybrid drivetrain for it. Two recalls cover its inverter: 11V342 on the 2006-2007 and 13V396 on the 2006-2008. Under 13V396, dealers replace the IPM inside the inverter free of charge.
The 2007 has 289 complaints, with the engine named most (40). The 2008 has 253, led by vehicle speed control (32).
2010-2015: the third generation (AL10)
Wikipedia dates this RX from November 2008 to September 2015, with a 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6, a 2.7-liter four from 2010, and the RX 450h hybrid. Its six model years hold 499 complaints.
The 2010 has 192, and vehicle speed control is named most (40). Recall 12V305 had dealers modify or replace the accelerator pedal and replace the driver's floor mat on 2010 RX 350 and RX 450h models built from November 28, 2008 through September 1, 2010. Its 164,601-vehicle count includes Toyota Land Cruisers. On 2012-2013 RX 350s, recall 14V054 updated the skid control computer that runs the brake actuator; that campaign also covered the Tacoma and RAV4.
2016-2022: the fourth generation (AL20)
These years hold 476 complaints. Wikipedia lists a 3.5-liter V6 with an 8-speed Aisin automatic for the RX 350 and an eCVT for the RX 450h. Air bags lead the 2020 (21 of 55 complaints) and the 2021 (46 of 71). Recall 23V865 covers the front passenger occupant classification sensor on 2020-2021 RX 350 and RX 450h models, inside a campaign of 999,901 vehicles across many Toyota and Lexus models.
The 2019's top component is the fuel and propulsion system (20). Two fuel pump recalls reach these years: 20V012 on 2017-2019 models and 20V682 on 2017-2020 models. Each counted more than a million vehicles across Toyota and Lexus. Recall 18V085 replaced side air bag sensors on some 2016s.
2023-2026: the fifth generation
So far there are 157 complaints on these young cars. Wikipedia lists a 2.4-liter turbo four for the RX 350, hybrid 350h and 500h versions, and a plug-in RX 450h+ with an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. On the 2024, 2025 and 2026, electrical complaints outnumber every other category. Recalls here cover the steering wheel clockspring (23V480, 2023), the second-row center seat belt (25V059, 2024-2025), instrument panel software (25V595, 2025) and the rearview camera (26V162, 2023-2026).
Lexus RX complaints and recalls by model year
Each row is one RX model year in the October 10, 2026 pull. A single recall campaign can appear on several rows, since it is tallied for every year it reaches. When NHTSA's catch-all category ranks first, the last column shows the runner-up.

Fix the RX or sell it?
Begin with NHTSA's recall search; it costs nothing and may turn up free dealer work. Next, set the shop's quote on paper beside asking prices for a working RX from your year. When the estimate eats most of that figure, keeping the RX rarely pays.
- Hybrid warning on a 400h, 450h or 500h? The inverter recalls above cover some 2006-2008 RX 400h models, so ask a Lexus dealer whether yours was done. The hybrid battery guide covers the rest.
- Power-train trouble on a 1999-2002? That is where the RX's power-train complaints pile up. See bad transmission for how to weigh a quote on an SUV this old.
- Brake trouble on a 2004-2006? Ask whether the 10V499 seal replacement was ever done.
- Quote bigger than the RX is worth? Read repairs cost more than it is worth.
Selling an RX whole
- Gather the basics: the VIN, the mileage, which version it is (RX 300, 330, 350, 400h, 450h and so on) and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us about the spot: curbside, under a carport, behind a locked gate. Note whether the RX steers and rolls so the driver brings the right gear. You get free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole. On a hybrid, the battery pack stays in. Tell us about anything already removed.
- Paperwork: the RX's title goes to the driver, along with ID matching the name printed on it. Plate rules differ from state to state; after you sell lists them. Lost the title? The no-title guide explains the options.

Questions people ask
- Which Lexus RX years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2004 leads with 327 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file. Behind it sit the 2007 (289), the 1999 (256), the 2006 and 2008 (253 apiece) and the 2000 (245). The fifth-generation RX has been built only since October 2022, which leaves its owners a short window to report anything.
- How do I find out if my RX has an open recall?
- Enter your RX's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or have a Lexus service desk check it for you. There are 31 campaigns touching the RX, from 2004 brake light switches to rear camera software on 2023-2026 models.
- Will you buy an RX 400h or RX 450h with a dead hybrid system?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, hybrids included, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Leave the hybrid battery in the car, and tell us what warning lights show and whether the SUV rolls.
- Should I pull parts off my RX before selling it?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits, hybrid pack and converters included. An RX that turns up short a wheel or a converter is worth less than the one described, so list anything already removed up front.
